Is my husband correct

We are currently get ting our kitchen done and choose a IKEA kitchen witch have tall deep units lovey

We brought the legs that go with the kitchen units however the builder had said they weren't very sturdy and brought standard legs with make the units about 5cm higher than the standard

My husband is making be feel awful and feel quite bullied by him o can't sit all day and watch the builder I have 3 children and in any case I no nothing about building work the first day when he set the leg on husband came home said there a it high then said no more more work was then done work tops now on sink in and yesterday he complained at me I

Then said do you want me to say somthing to the builder he kept changing his mind then said no

Now today's he's telling me we waisted 5 grand most likely devalued our home and now most of the works been completed there's not much that can be done
Really gets me the Kitchen has had the high legs for a few days and he should of said then

He keeps saying its looks strange because the dishwasher and washing machine don't sit flush under the work top
It looks a little night but tbh it's a good hight for me cooking and chopping ect

Apart from stressing me out what's the blinking point of saying now I am sure even as late as yesterday I could of said somthing to the builder but he told me not to and I no he's just going to keep moaning about it for years to come

I did say when we come to sell witch won't be for at least 10 years we can replace the kitchen as most of the cost this time was knocking out a wall and re jigging the way the kitchen was set up

Have we waisted the money is this a awful mistake

Please note were about half way through the build everything else is fine

Just so you have it in stereo
DH has pointed out that your plug sockets aren't legal - if you spill anything on the worktop you may well electrocute yourself if the liquid hits the socket.
He also thinks your builder has fucked something else up and this is his way of hiding it.

Justaboy · 10/03/2016 22:57

Catvsworld Well if it suits you then leave it like that its not a hanging office to have it where you like, its just a bit higher than the norm.

As to the plinth pads at the bottom their standard height is 150 mm But you can make them up from sheets of MDF to be whatever you want.

Catvsworld · 10/03/2016 22:57

The gap between dishwasher and bottom of work top is about 10.5 cm

When I had my kitchen done the cooker had to be raised to be flush with the work tops, get the appliances raised.

It will be better for your back in the long run.

The last kitchen I got fitted I had everything raised on a plinth, it's much nicer to work at the height for me and I'm only 5f8

If you don't like it explain this to the builder and stop him now and get it sorted

Champagneformyrealfriends · 10/03/2016 22:58

Don't panic-it can be sorted. You can either put the appliances on mdf and build a plinth round the bottom or the work tops can be lowered. There's very little that can't be sorted. And get your DH to talk to the builder. Don't lose sleep over this op it's only a kitchen.

DaphneCanDoBetterThanFred · 10/03/2016 22:58

If it can't be fixed, I'd go with raising the washing machine etc up. I would want to put a deep low drawer either under the raised washing machine and dishwasher or a drawer above them if they are not raised, but I don't know how feasible that would be in real life.

I don't think it looks awful op, but I do think your dh is being awful about this. I hope the builder will see reason and sort it out for you.

grumpysquash3 · 10/03/2016 22:58

When the builders complete the build and put the doors and sides on the electricals, you really won't notice. It'll look like a nice neat run of cupboards. (I guess they'll raise the appliances and put in a kick board at the bottom, then it'll match the other cupboards)

Justaboy · 10/03/2016 22:59

10.5 cm or 105 mm?. That does seem at odds with the other measurement how thick is the worktop that should be 40 mm or 4 cm.

unlucky83 · 10/03/2016 23:00

Relatively easy to change the work top ...might have to replumb the sink depending on how its been fitted. Electrics - will have wiggle room - I'm pretty sure sockets aren't normally that close to the worktop anyway ...look like they have been put in with a standard height in mind... and how are you going to fit a back splash in that narrow gap underneath them? (also is that one next to window? if it is hard to tell from the photo but it looks a bit close to the sink to me...)
With that height not sure the standard plinths (kick boards) will be big enough and that would cause all kinds of problems too
Finally are you having any wall cupboards? You need to watch out for how much height you will have between the worktop and the bottom of the wall cupboards...and if they put the wall cupboards in high to accommodatethe raised worktop you will need a step to reach into the second shelf...never mind the higher ones.
I suspect the builder has fucked up somewhere, he's trying to bodge it and probably hasn't thought it through properly - tell him you want the worktop dropped...

xenapants · 10/03/2016 23:00

I do not understand why you simply won't ask the builder to change it. You don't have to pay for it - he's made a mistake. What's so difficult about telling him? Why do you need your husband to do it? It does look ridiculous, sorry.

Lanark2 · 10/03/2016 23:00

My opinion is either solution is good, but that I find higher units much better.. Better on the back, better for chopping etc, so I would go for platforms under white goods. This will also make cleaning and draining filters easier as they are normally right at the bottom so getting a jug under is a pain. My launderette has raised machines and it's so much better..

RhiWrites · 10/03/2016 23:01

There are several different options for fixing the issue to modify or conceal it.

The kitchen will look good when it's done but you do need something to conceal the gaps.

TheOddity · 10/03/2016 23:01

If you want to avoid confrontation with your builder and can live with the height being a little more than average, why not just say tomorrow "so what's the plan for the appliances to get them to be flush?". That way he knows that it what your expecting and doesn't just sod off leaving you with a big gap.

SoThatHappened · 10/03/2016 23:01

hang on a minute.....even if the builders had used the other legs....the unit next to the washing machine still would have been on legs though and the work top would still not have been flush with the appliances albeit the gap would've been smaller.

You need to raise the appliances.

Lanark2 · 10/03/2016 23:03

Also IKEA will take the legs back (small beer!)

MsMargaretCarter · 10/03/2016 23:04

Once the feet are hidden it will be absolutely fine! Not sure what everyone else is seeing!

landrover · 10/03/2016 23:07

Ermmm, sorry I agree with poster about the sockets, they look like they may be unsafe! I would get the electrician back to check. He has prob put them in at standard height but the worktops are now too high so they wouldn't pass building regs! sorry x

Justaboy · 10/03/2016 23:07

Right just measured our Miele washing machine and that's 845 mm above floor level so if you say there's a gap of 105 mm then adding a standard worktop of 40 mm that all adds up to 990 which is at variance to your earlier 950?.

SonjasSister · 10/03/2016 23:08

You so haven't "wasted 5 grand"! What a drama queen!!

And your husband has no right to blame you - he's probably angry because he knows actually its his fault for not taking the time off but like so many men, is incapable of accepting blame (generalisation I know but we've all met one!) so is blaming everyone else. He ought to grow up.

But don't worry, your kitchen is going to look great!

Get the builder to help you...there are several good suggestions here: I would even try asking if he can build o for shallow drawers above the appliances, if at all possible (hung from the worktop?) (you can never have too many drawers in a kitchen) - make them removable and as a pp says, it will make pulling appliances out for servicing/replacement a lot easier, too. (more chance they won't scrape your nice tiles).

Totally sympathies though, I always get stressed when we have work done, always hate it, always think 'OMG that was SO not what we wanted' about something or another. Then forget about it after a week and bore everyone with how great it is for ever after. Like childbirth really Wink

GloGirl · 10/03/2016 23:09

Your sockets are far too close to the worktop. You won't be able to plug anything in as the flexes won't bend.

I have a similar issue with decent kitchen appliances in my kitchen.

Turn the switch off at the wall and then plug in a variety of appliances - your kettle, toaster, food processor.

In fact Google the regulations I'm sure they would need to be X mm higher than a worktop.

You REALLY REALLY need to lower all the units

You do, honest.

SonjasSister · 10/03/2016 23:10

Oh, and yes, a side down by the washing machine (we have similar with a fridge). Totally ''finishes' the look

LittleBearPad · 10/03/2016 23:11

You won't have to pay to fix this. Your builder will.

Tell him tomorrow to drop it all down. Sorry but the gap over the appliances isn't good.

IthoughtATMwasacashpoint · 10/03/2016 23:12

It would be a lot easier to raise the appliances (if the sockets are ok at that height) than to drop the units and worktops. If here is only 5cm difference in the height of the legs and the gap between the top of the washing machine and the worktop is 10.5 cm you'd have had a gap whichever legs he had used. If he raises the appliances he could put a piece of the same kick board along the gap at the bottom so that it all matches in
