Is my husband correct

Catvsworld · 10/03/2016 22:00

We are currently get ting our kitchen done and choose a IKEA kitchen witch have tall deep units lovey

We brought the legs that go with the kitchen units however the builder had said they weren't very sturdy and brought standard legs with make the units about 5cm higher than the standard

My husband is making be feel awful and feel quite bullied by him o can't sit all day and watch the builder I have 3 children and in any case I no nothing about building work the first day when he set the leg on husband came home said there a it high then said no more more work was then done work tops now on sink in and yesterday he complained at me I

Then said do you want me to say somthing to the builder he kept changing his mind then said no

Now today's he's telling me we waisted 5 grand most likely devalued our home and now most of the works been completed there's not much that can be done
Really gets me the Kitchen has had the high legs for a few days and he should of said then

He keeps saying its looks strange because the dishwasher and washing machine don't sit flush under the work top
It looks a little night but tbh it's a good hight for me cooking and chopping ect

Apart from stressing me out what's the blinking point of saying now I am sure even as late as yesterday I could of said somthing to the builder but he told me not to and I no he's just going to keep moaning about it for years to come

I did say when we come to sell witch won't be for at least 10 years we can replace the kitchen as most of the cost this time was knocking out a wall and re jigging the way the kitchen was set up

Have we waisted the money is this a awful mistake

Please note were about half way through the build everything else is fine

The height of the work top from the floor should be 890. What is the height of yours?

nauticant · 10/03/2016 22:42

In your situation OP I'd ask the builder if the legs can be replaced for ones with the correct height. If they can (and remember most "impossible" things in house projects can be solved) the chances are the builder will firstly say "no", secondly will say "possibly but it will be a real problem", and thirdly will grumble a great deal and then actually get on with the job.

Assuming it can be done the real issues would be additional cost and delay (the latter being one of the main reasons why builders don't want to redo/change things).

HereIAm20 · 10/03/2016 22:42

Our current kitchen also IKEA was here when we moved in. The previous owners were very tall so had it purposely set on taller legs (like yours> However our dishwasher and fridge etc have been set on blocks so that they are flush under the worksurface.

There is a taller than average plinth/kickboard which fits flush to the floor and looks normal. It is only because I am such a shorty that I realised they weren't regular height. We are having a new kitchen next month and the fitters pointed out ours was higher than average and would drop by about 5cm. If they put the appliances on blocks and have a baseboard it won't notice.

Get them to fix it. If there's any extra expense your dh should deal with it because he wouldn't let you say anything. I think it looks awful but when fixed will be very nice indeed.

Catvsworld Can you go an get a tape measure and measure from the tiled floor to the top surface of the worktop then we can judge how excessive it is please?.

Ludoole · 10/03/2016 22:44

If your husbands not happy, tell him to talk to the fitter.... no point blaming you. Flowers

MyDarlingWhatIfYouFly · 10/03/2016 22:44

I know I'm in the minority here, but I really like the high work tops and the gap wouldn't bother me in the slightest.

It's so over dramatic for him to say you've devalued your home, honestly it's just a bloody worktop.

But at the end of the day it doesn't really matter what we think, if you can't live with it, you'll have to tell the builder to change it. Just say you didn't realise the gap would be so big and what would it take to fix it, then decide when he's let you know.

Try not to get stressed. Your oh is being a bit of a dick tbh. If he's that bothered he should have spoken to the builder himself (and earlier!)

If you're tall, the higher work surfaces will be a back saver. If you're not, you probably should ask builder to redo.

(I hate this too - I get left to supervise this stuff, then DH comes home and tells me that I got it wrong. Boils my piss.)

MrsBobDylan · 10/03/2016 22:46

Tell your dh to speak to the fitter and sort it out. He can call from work tomorrow and deal with it. You don't have to be the one to deal with it. It's going to be a lovely kitchin BTW, you'll be glad you had it done I promise.Flowers

boodles · 10/03/2016 22:46

The legs should be 170.

Catvsworld · 10/03/2016 22:48

It's 95cm from floor to bottom of work top

OP posts:
whois · 10/03/2016 22:49

It does look a bit silly, but if you like the height for cooking and chopping o would rise up the washing machine and cover up the platform with kick boards. Job done.

boodles · 10/03/2016 22:49

No it isn't catv.

RealityCheque · 10/03/2016 22:50

Your builder is a cowboy. That is absolutely fucking hideous.

It is not too late to demand it is put right - you had no way of seeing how bad it was until the worktop was fitted.

pictish · 10/03/2016 22:51

It's too high...your builder is an arse. So is your husband, it's not fair to blame you, he had the opportunity to call a halt as well. You offered to and he said no.

But yes I'm sorry, it looks wrong to me. I'd not rest until the builder made good his gaff.

Nospringflower · 10/03/2016 22:52

Ok - have just measured ours and it is 93cm from floor to the top of the worktop so that doesn't sound like too much difference. I think the main thing would be just to have something to cover the gaps so that it doesn't look odd. Although I have just looked now at our kitchen and ssee that there is a gap between our dishwasher and the surface. Omg I never noticed that before!! Honestly I don't know what to say - I might need to do something about it now!!

Justaboy · 10/03/2016 22:52

So around 40 mm or One and a half inches higher then what is deemed normal, as best I know there is no set in stone standard of normal.

So its just personal, if you can use it like that then leave it!

Catvsworld · 10/03/2016 22:53

When dh asked me what I thought of the hight I didn't say much because to be honest it actually fits me well for chopping not haveing to bend down

I have never had a new kitchen so didn't think much either way

But now everyone's saying how awful it looks I feel dreadful I have text the builder telling him we need to talk but tbh I don't think we have the funds to put this right

The legs seem to be cranked right to the last seeing so they are very tall

OP posts:
lighteningirl · 10/03/2016 22:55

You don't have to pay to fix your builders mistakes

Arkwright · 10/03/2016 22:55

You will not need to pay it should be up to the builder to put it right.

RealityCheque · 10/03/2016 22:55

It is not YOUR funds that should be used. It is the builders. He's done a crap job and now needs to put it right.

Catvsworld · 10/03/2016 22:56

He will be filling the gap with kick board so you won't see the legs

It's just the hight of the units and the gap between the appliances and the work top
