AIBU?

To name and shame someone who ripped me off?

I have a very detailed post I could put here (and I'm not sure which part of the forums would best suit it) but as it mentions the guy's name (who will no doubt be attempting to do it to others as he's a con artist), I wanted to ask if it's okay to name him, first. Thanks.

Icompletelyunderstand - Which is the best forum on here, on which to name him, please?

Don't name him! Please don't.

Mn will delete you if you carry on like this.

Why not have a word with your local paper? They could well be interested, but make sure you practice your sad face.

I am no expert, but if you give enough detail that he can be identified it is just a open to libel action as naming him, and MN would have to delete it or they could be sued too.

I understand that is why at the start of some books/films/tv there is a statement that all characters are imaginary and not intended to be like any living person.

My law degree is a bit dusty but I think I'm right in saying that if what you say is true, it isn't libellous/slanderous. I personally never shy away from speaking the truth about those who set out to exploit others. Why should they be protected by an (I think) misplaced fear of being sued for defamation? At worst, your thread would be removed if someone complained.

Hi OP,

We don't allow posts that name and shame individuals as we think it's really better to deal with these things in person if you know them.

Mumsnet is a site for peer to peer support and advice. You're welcome to explain what has happened to you if you need some advice or support but please don't mentions names as we will have to remove them.

LurkingHusband · 10/03/2016 15:47

mn won't take the chance though, because they have no way of knowing if it's true.

Not only that. Once they have been notified, they become liable if they do not remove the offending comment. This was mentioned a while ago when a very litigious organisation got their knickers twisted about MNetters slagging them off. They complained to MNHQ who had no option but to ask all the people on the thread(s) if they were willing to be identified to the organisation, or remove their posts.

Demon v. Godfrey is the precedent on this one. 1996. (I've been online a long time).

I wouldn't name him publicly or in private to anyone you do not know and trust.

It has the potential to come back and bite you.

I understand you are angry and want to DO something but don't. Calm down. Walk away, think it over.

You won't feel better if you do this.

Take any complaint through the proper channels.

There you go with the initials again.

Like Arf I can't ever guess who they refer to.

Public thanks to twirly who put me out of my misery with JM.

twirlypoo · 10/03/2016 16:34

Grin you are welcome, I am crap at guessing initials so PK is beyond me I am afraid!

Katenka · 10/03/2016 16:35

I figured JM by googling details from the op then adding JM and it suggested it.
