To think changing bedsheets once a week is ott

Another week has whizzed past, feels like yesterday I changed all the beds. They look and smell fine, surely if I only change beds once every 2 weeks we will still all survive. I could spend 30 minutes with my feet up drinking tea once in a while. Aibu?

I change mine once a week as I love the feel and smell of fresh sheets but there's nothing wrong with leaving them for a fortnight. Anyone who thinks it's skanky can toddle off.

And anyone who changes their sheets more than once a week needs to take up a hobby quite frankly.

Greengardenpixie · 10/03/2016 12:00

..and at the end of the day, who is caring. Its between you and your bed sheets!

tootsietoo · 10/03/2016 12:01

I do it when I feel like it! I used to be very particular when I lived alone. Now that I appear to be 3 other people's housework fairy, I have downed tools a bit - if the lazy little slobs don't care about the dirt and creased clothes then I'm not going to care for them!

I will often change our sheets when I know DH will be away for a few nights, then I get the lovely cleanness all to myself. The children can strip their own beds if they want clean sheets. They never do, but DD2 has once or twice now asked me for clean sheets! So I'm hoping she might reach the point of stripping the bed quite soon.

I remember a friend of my mum's having a little slogan sign thing in her kitchen saying "boring women have clean houses" (not sure why "women" not "people" - but this was the 80s) and I used to be so inwardly cross about her smug "I'm so busy and interesting that I'm too special to clean" attitude. But I do sort of get it now, I would rather go for a run or sit down with a cup of tea than have clean sheets every week! And I can't have both now, there is only time for the priorities.

GlindatheFairy · 10/03/2016 12:01

At least three weeks here, literally could not be arsed more than that. The sheets don't smell, or if they do it's of us and I like our smell. Doesn't affect anyone else - leave them as long as you want.

tootsietoo · 10/03/2016 12:02

btw, that makes it sound like I NEVER change my children's beds. I do of course, just not weekly!

Tywinlannister · 10/03/2016 12:04

This thread makes me miss my washing line. I am currently surrounded by airers, every radiator is full, DH's shirts are hanging everywhere. Roll on summer!

LaContessaDiPlump · 10/03/2016 12:05

I have recently instigated the system of changing them once a month. This is a considerable improvement on what happened before Blush

DH doesn't like the bed being changed. He says it's nice to sleep in a bed that smells like him

Namechangenell · 10/03/2016 12:07

Once a week in summer, every two weeks in winter.

Ginseng1 · 10/03/2016 12:09

I TRY to do once a fortnight. ours one week & the 2 kids the next. but that slips at times too. As for ironing sheets however lovely it is think anyone who does that has WAY too much time on their hands!

BuggerLumpsAnnoyed · 10/03/2016 12:09

I do mine once a week. Only because I have the time, a tumble dryer, and I like having fresh sheets, if I've got a lot on, I might leave it a wee bit longer, like 9 days.

I don't think leaving it a couple weeks is particularly grim, just not for me.

NightWanderer · 10/03/2016 12:12

It really doesn't take that long though. Hmm

I mean, I don't care how often others do it but I hate the suggestion that I'm some boring, stuck-up mum because I spend 5 minutes changing the sheets every weekend while doing a quick tidy up and hoover of the bedrooms.

Charley50 · 10/03/2016 12:13

I'm looking forward to reading the thread but I sometimes wait a week or two...it depends how much action we are having tbh.

Sallystyle · 10/03/2016 12:31

I wish we only had to change hospital bed sheets every three days. Would save me so much work.

SatsukiKusakabe · 10/03/2016 12:32

Well, quite. It's personal preference. Everyone uses their time on things someone else wouldn't.

I manage to change sheets, but it don't vacuum often enough. Sometimes I read books instead of cleaning out my cupboards. Sometimes I play with my children instead of cleaning the bathrooms, sometimes the bathrooms really have to take precedence. It all gets done, and I am glad for whatever it is I've managed that day.

SuperFlyHigh · 10/03/2016 12:33

Every 2-3 weeks. Should be every week in fact it was every week last month. More if I'm ill

Ginslinger · 10/03/2016 12:35

I change them every year whether they need it or not Grin

I'm a 2-weeker too - we shower daily so pretty clean. As a society our obsession with hygiene and cleanliness is contributing to poor immunity.

phoenix1973 · 10/03/2016 12:35

I change the sheets every 2-3 weeks and that suits us just fine. To each their own.

TooGood2BeFalse · 10/03/2016 12:38

Winter - Once every two weeks for ours, once a week for DS who is 4 (he doesn't wet the bed, it's just easier to be bothered for him and I love his little bedroom looking nice Grin )

We live in Cyprus though and summers are boiling hot so once a week in summer at least for all of us.

BuggersMuddle · 10/03/2016 12:42

Weekly here. Longer than that and I don't think they feel clean, even if they don't have an obvious smell.

I suppose some people sweat less; might shower in the evening; wear fresh PJs etc. so I wouldn't automatically think 'grim' at 2 weeks. I do think much more than they must be a bit of a pit though tbh, whether the owner can smell it or not.

Flashbangandgone · 10/03/2016 12:44
Shock You change your underwear at least once daily (I hope), so why do we think sheets/pillows should be any different! They should be done DAILY - stale sweat/flaked off skin is vile!... And we say we live in a civilised country! Ffs duvets are cleaned weekly, twice-weekly in summer. I went round a friend's house once and they didn't even have a dust cover over the pillows they were due to sleep on that night!... What's the point of having clean linen if you let dust settle on it for hours before you sleep! Disgusting!!
oldlaundbooth · 10/03/2016 12:46

God I think I'm doing well if it's every three weeks! Blush

oldlaundbooth · 10/03/2016 12:47

Are you kidding, flashbang?

CrystalMcPistol · 10/03/2016 12:47

Ah sure throw in a few more 'disgusting's, !!!!!!!, and CAPS LOCK OUTRAGE Flash. I don't think you made your wacko feelings clear enough.

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia · 10/03/2016 12:47

contessadiplump ...my lot always used to moan their beds smelled weird if I did their sheets,...little ingrates!

I do mine adhoc really....certainly no more than a fortnight, usually a weekly thing, but if anyone is sweaty or ill then they get whipped off and into the machine

Also I tend to use a top sheet, so the duvet cover needs less frequent washing.

I often shower before bed, as does dh, so there not much stink to get rid of really!

Charley50 · 10/03/2016 12:47

Flashbang - because we don't wear our sheets down our pants!?
