AIBU to not give DD a pile of gifts for Easter?

DD is 7 and will receive an egg, an Easter cuddly and maybe a couple of Easter themed trinket type things if I see anything nice. But I know on Easter Sunday Facebook will be filled with photographs of piles of stuff that give Christmas a run for it's money. Am I being mean? It was a single egg in my day...

It's early winter in Australia. Mine always got a pair of nice winter pjs and one egg when they were little. It cut down on the enevitable chocolate overload. They are young adults now and still love getting a pair of pjs for Easter

HerbieRidesAgain · 12/03/2016 11:44

My children got an egg and a new outfit. Their grandparents also bought them the same, an egg and clothes, it stemmed from them getting a new sunday best at easter i think. Occasionally they got some small mini eggs to hunt for.
As for my grandchilden well I'll get them anything they want Wink ok truthfully they will also get an egg (or maybe 2 because M&S do a beautiful Frozen Castle and a Star Wars head) and some clothes Smile

beautygal29 · 12/03/2016 13:19

My son gets a present instead because all our family and friends buy him chocolate eggs but we don't really like him having them but they would get very offended if we told them that.

Buttons23 · 12/03/2016 13:28

I am giving my son a few little bits for Easter. He will have one small milky bar egg and then some Easter stickers, crafts and baking supplies. It's stuff I would buy/have anyway and it keeps him entertained over the Easter weekend.

Fjlb · 12/03/2016 13:36

My son had gifts last year but only because his birthday is nye so he had some garden toys with his birthday money. Only got him an egg this year.

MagicalMrsMistoffelees · 12/03/2016 13:36

Our boys get an egg each from us. No gifts and we don't send cards.

I'm not on Facebook but I'm wondering why anyone would take a picture of their child's Easter 'gifts' and post it on there. Is that an actual thing?

Before anyone screams 'don't judge!' or 'each to their own!' please can I emphasise that I'm genuinely interested as to why someone would do that.

I'm forty Shock in a few years - am I too old for this world already?

soundsystem · 12/03/2016 13:45

No piles of presents here: either one egg or one equivalent item for non-chocolate eaters. So DD will have an Easter-themed sticker book, as she's a bit small for chocolate.

Spot on limitedperiodonly

We used to get the latest disney movie/s (up to 1 each) and a new towel for the summer from Easter. No chocolate from parents (or usually Grandparents or Aunties who chipped in for any extra movies from that year) but occasionally from family friends. We had the full disney collection which imo was much better :)

BuntyCollocks · 12/03/2016 14:41

I buy mine a Disney dvd each (which, handily, are usually on Bogof at this time of year). I don't allow a lot of chocolate, but certain relatives (DM!) can't help themselves from over buying at Christmas and Easter, to the point I had an actual drawer of chocolate.

They get plenty of sweets from everyone else, and we as a family get a lot of enjoyment out of the DVDs. This year we have inside out and frozen.

SellFridges · 12/03/2016 14:46

I buy my DD some small eggs for a hunt. But I do work for a big confectionary company so it would be odd not to bother at all.

She'll get lots from relatives too who will also give her cash or buy her a summer coat. I think that's a Yorkshire tradition, maybe related to th Sunday best thing mentioned earlier.

I'm hoping DS gets no chocolate but given he got some for Christmas when he was 8 months I suspect that may be wishful thinking.

FixItUpChappie · 12/03/2016 15:46

we are not in the US or UK and are utterly non-religious but we do

-some spring/bunny decoration in the house
-dye eggs
-Easter crafts
-Easter egg hunt with the plastic eggs, each one with a chocolate, jellybean or Easter sticker in it + medium chocolate bunny in their Easter basket - we have done a small Easter cuddly each before.
-big brunch

I think this is fine - if i didn't have to ward off gifts and even more chocolate from my mother it would be better. What we offer is a treat....what we offer plus what my mother insists on bringing = excessive. That is the basic formula for every holiday at our house Hmm

Unmarriedhousewife · 12/03/2016 15:55

We do cheapy hollow hidden eggs from Easter bunny and a big egg of their choice from us. Rest of family don't buy chocolate but a book, CD or money. They are both winter born 9 & 2 so we traditionally put their money towards a garden toy. It might seem a lot to some but we like to do it as their birthdays and christmas are so close together

Lariflete · 12/03/2016 16:05

We get the DC a chocolate egg each and then they get chocolate from everyone else too, which we put in the cupboard and dole out throughout the year. It normally lasts until about October and their Christmas sweets are just running out now.

mizu · 12/03/2016 17:33

Haven't read the whole thread but have never heard of presents for Easter.
DDs have an egg hunt with us and my mum will get them an egg but that's it. It's Easter right?

KathrynL · 12/03/2016 17:52

My kids don't get gifts as such but we do a huge Easter egg hunt in our garden and usually some of the neighbours kids join us too. For the past few years usually bank holiday Friday we sit and do Easter arts and crafts. I buy Easter baskets, crepe paper, nests, chicks etc and tons of mini eggs and we make little gift baskets for family and whatever chocolate or bits are left they get to have, along with their eggs on Easter Sunday. But as for giving toys or "proper gifts for Easter well I think that's kind of ridiculous and ott.

Topseyt · 12/03/2016 18:03

Ours get a chocolate egg or two each. Nothing else, and we don't do Easter cards.

I couldn't be bothered with anything more.

Mousefinkle · 12/03/2016 19:01

They get an egg and a chocolate bunny and we watch hop. It's Easter, not Christmas or a birthday. Some people obviously just like spending a lot of pointless money.

thethoughtfox · 12/03/2016 19:32

My siser's friend got money from all her relatives every Easter. Serious money:I remember her gran giving her £200 one year.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 13/03/2016 06:38

Ive never bought my children an Easter egg. They get some new clothes (as did everyone I know as a child) that I would have been buying anyway. This year there is also a book each as I saw some in the sale. Again I'd have bought them anyway.

Higge · 13/03/2016 08:13

Dcs get one egg, no need for any more - the chocolate is rank anyway. And Easter gifts? No not here....no budget issues, no religious issues, just no need.
