AIBU to not give DD a pile of gifts for Easter?

DD is 7 and will receive an egg, an Easter cuddly and maybe a couple of Easter themed trinket type things if I see anything nice. But I know on Easter Sunday Facebook will be filled with photographs of piles of stuff that give Christmas a run for it's money. Am I being mean? It was a single egg in my day...

WTF? What happened to a Cadbury's egg in a mug and a three-line whip to attend Sunday morning service? My more churchgoing friends send out Easter cards by way of celebration, and if that's your bag then I think it's entirely appropriate. Absolutely not a gift opportunity otherwise.

londonrach · 11/03/2016 08:45

Love to see your ideas crieff. I have some beautiful easter clothes and german decorations, mostly wooden. It just brings the spring into the house and lots of hope for a good summer. I think easter is my fav as its a time of hope and new things...

londonrach · 11/03/2016 08:45

Cloths not clothes ipad!

PrimalLass · 11/03/2016 08:48

My DS gets ummmmmmm nothing!

Not religious so it holds no meaning for us.

I have no doubt a rogue grandparent may buy choc egg but who knows!

Lottie2611 · 11/03/2016 09:02

My son gets around 20 eggs. Around five or six from me and his dad. And the rest from family. They also get him little cuddly toys. And I get him a toy and his dad will get him a new pair of converse this year.

We arnt on facebook. We do it purely because his birthday is 29th Dec so like to spoil him through the year too.

I'm with happymummy007. My ds has a birthday very close to Christmas. Breaks it up for him.

It's up to you what you get. Personally, if I allowed my in laws to buy my son Easter eggs, I'd have hundreds of the flipping things so I say no chocolate and if they have to get him something but a t shirt or take him out for a special trip.

My side of the family is Catholic and it's normal for us to exchange a small gift. I get my nieces a sticker/colouring book each and if we're together a kinder egg rather than masses of chocolate. My lovely sister in law does the same for my son.

It's your choice what you do, I think it's bonkers that people spend so much money though!!

Queenie73 · 11/03/2016 09:36

The only Easter gift I buy is for my mother, who is allergic to chocolate. The kids get a couple of eggs each. We usually have a posher lunch than usual after Mass, but definitely no gifts.

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 11/03/2016 10:01

Easter presents? No way!
Mine get an Easter egg and maybe a chocolate bunny, that's it.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 11/03/2016 10:07

An Easter egg and new clothes here.

I'm sure the haul of large presents is a a new commercialisation. Giving of new clothes is a tradition that goes back centuries though.

BrownieQueen75 · 11/03/2016 10:16

Mine get new clothes (although probably something I'd have bought them anyway, not 'special Easter clothes') from us and also from my mum. That has always been our family tradition.

Other than that, just eggs. And hopefully not too many.

AMouseLivedinaWindMill · 11/03/2016 10:38

I like Easter as a mark of the start of spring.

I dont want to cause any heart palipations - but I have tons of gorgeous easter decorations.

Tons, I adore them! We also have a home made white twig tree, which we put little eggs and so on on. I love the colours, the chicks the lambs, the daffs, the HOPE that winter is over. I love starting to garden, sow seeds and so on.

I also shove Jesus christ superstar on car cd players, to inject some faith into the celebration.

There are many reasons to celebrate easter.

CrystalMcPistol · 11/03/2016 10:44

'My side of the family is Catholic and it's normal for us to exchange a small gift.'

I grew up in a Catholic family, and in a Catholic country and have never heard of this tradition. Just chocolate and a luscious roast lamb lunch here.

CrystalMcPistol · 11/03/2016 10:46

Germans go in for Easter trees don't they? This is pretty spectacular!

Wow. I want one of those.

verytiredmummy1 · 11/03/2016 10:56

Mines only little but we will give a present instead of an egg but something small like a teddy or something.
My parents did this when I was little as other relatives gave me chocolate so they decided to give me something different x

hefzi · 11/03/2016 11:01

london and crief my mother (N Yorks) has always done an Easter tree - branches of catkins and pussy willow with decorated eggs and little rabbits/chickens hung on it - I think it's a lovely idea, though when I was a child in the 70s, you never saw decorations like this: they are everywhere now, though.

Gifts were around in the 70s too - but my parents used to tell people that it was a gift of an egg or nothing, as it was Easter. The Easter Bunny used to deliver the eggs and hide them in the garden, and we'd do a hunt before church. My GP would often give us a new dress and an Easter bonnet for church too (yes, we are religious maniacs Grin) We also do cards - though not as widely as Christmas cards, and only ones with religious themes.

I understand the gifts thing if it's a sort of alternative birthday, but not really at all if you're not a practising Christian, as Easter presumably doesn't have a meaning to you (as though it's become synonymous with spring, it's not actually the same as the beginning of spring) - but really, each to their own: if people are concerned about what other people on FB think of their practices, they probably have bigger problems than gifts or eggs at Easter Grin

chunkymum1 · 11/03/2016 11:05

Mine do get a few presents from grandparents (just small things though, not a re-run of Christmas). However, this is only because they know DC will get chocolate eggs from extended family/friends and I'm not keen on them eating huge amounts of sugar.

Jesabel · 11/03/2016 11:07

I don't really see Easter as a religious event, it doesn't need to have anything to do with Christianity. Eggs, bunnies, lambs and chicks have fuck all to do with Jesus Grin

Jesabel · 11/03/2016 11:10

I mean, even the name "Easter" has nothing to do with Jesus and is all about pagan spring festivities...

CrystalMcPistol · 11/03/2016 11:12

Like most Christian celebrations Easter took over from a pre-existing pagan festival. All the bunnies and egg symbolism are to do with the fertility of Spring rather than Easter itself.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 11/03/2016 11:35

We tend to embrace any excuse for a bit of festivity. Twiggy tree festooned with spring time tat, boiled eggs with faces drawn on them, themed Easter cake that sort of thing. Kids total haul will probably be two or three eggs and some cash. When they were little they used to get a nice new outfit and wear it to church.

Burgerbobismydad · 11/03/2016 11:38

Mine get a chocolate egg. Job done.
