And if it took longer the second time?

After DC1 my body went back to normal within 24hours of giving birth (flat tummy, no stretchmarks or saggy skin) and I wore non-maternity clothes home from hospital. I'm 32.

Everyone says the second time is different!

Same here, biggles

EllsTeeth · 09/03/2016 22:03

Forgot to say that despite the easy weight loss, flat stomach etc my boobs will never be the same again. Shrivelled away to nothing they have Sad

Earlyday · 09/03/2016 22:11

I weigh a lot less since I had children - not sure why. I breasted for 6 months and maybe that was why i lost a good bit of weight. I've never put it back on despite doing not much exercise and eating normally.

MrsMook · 09/03/2016 22:23

It's taken me about 9m to a year both times to get back to the right clothes size.

With DS1 I went from 9st 2 to 8st 7 by the end of the nausea phase then up to 13 st in the remaining 5-6 months. Despite the initial loss, I gained bump rapidly and started buying maternity clothes from 8 weeks. Most maternity clothes were outgrown by the end of the second trimester. I think the rapid gain was mostly due to SPD settling in early and leaving me pretty much housebound at the end, so a loss of metabolism from moving, and water retention.

Second time the nausea was better so my weight was stable in the early months and I had the energy to keep moving until the SPD kicked in again. I then managed to keep moving on crutches (first time was undiagnosed despite trips to the drs). I kept the gain down to 12st. I think the main difference was water retention. I avoided carpal tunnel syndrome the second time.

DS1 kindly gave me saggy skin and a CS overhang. DS2 kindly trashed my pelvis and pelvic floor for several months. Both times I started my weight loss and exercise with staggering to the end of the road and back (then bed to recover). I concentrated on eating nutritious food, and fairly normal habits, and using the deficit from breastfeeding for loss. Also gradually rebuilding fitness and muscle.

It takes a while to slim back to my maternity jeans! I have an interim wardrobe until I reach my usual size.

I think much of the "me" weight late in pregnancy comes from the SPD reducing movement, and exhausting me with constant pain and disturbing my sleep encouraging a desire for quick energy carbs.

I've ended up slightly lighter after both children. I find it more effort to maintain these days, not helped my slightly separated abs. Alas my tiny bust doesn't hide the mum tum zone when it's having a bad day.

KeyserSophie · 10/03/2016 00:42

Caveat: I didn't gain much in either pregnancy (not really sure how given my daily family bag of liquorice allsorts (DD) and 6 pack of creme egg (DS) habit). They were also reasonably small (7lbs and 6.6lbs) so I didn't get a separation.

I did lose the extra weight quickly and my stomach went back flat within a week- that's mainly to do with uterus shrink i think. So that's the good news. I also went down 2 cup sizes in bras, which was kind of good, as I was an E and now I'm a C, but I can see that's a matter of opinion. Some people might not be happy with that.

Bad news: For perspective, I had my last DC at 37 - younger people would probably get off lighter - after DC2, I was left with somewhat crepey stomach skin. I do a lot of weight training, and even though I have a visible 6 pack, the desired aesthetic effect is totally negated by the crepe over the top.

GuybrushThreepwoodMP · 10/03/2016 06:03

Depends what you mean by 'back'.
I've lost the 2.5 extra stone I put on by 4 months. I've worked very hard to get my fitness back so I'm reasonably fit, healthy and toned. I look pretty good. But my tummy skin is stretched and wrinkled (particularly this time as I had full term twins), i have stretch marks and that obviously won't change. So I won't get my pre-pregnancy body back, but I am learning to love this new body.

I've found it easier to lose the weight this time than first time- I couldn't lose weight when I was breastfeeding.

sportinguista · 10/03/2016 06:14

I snapped back into shape quite quickly after the birth and with breastfeeding for 14 months. Then I went back to work and that put paid to it. Sitting all day, the many rounds of birthday snacks, meeting food, then hastily prepped meals, glass of wine after a hard day. Now I'm bloody heavier than ever!

However Iam now freelance and going to take more time to exercise, cook and have cut drinking. So hopefully I will get back to a bit of my pre-baby body.

Stillwishihadabs · 10/03/2016 06:53

I read that it's 9 months up, 9 months down and that was about right for me both times. I sadly don't have the toned wrinkle free abdomen of my 20's anymore, but I am a healthy weight and don't mind the way I look in a bikini (and DH pretends to loves it.

Dachshund · 10/03/2016 07:06

I didn't put much weight on over pregnancy, as I completely lost my appetite following on from morning sickness and it didn't come back until after DD was born!

I'd say the saggy empty belly went back down after about a week and the weight came off pretty quickly too. She's 3.5 months now and I weigh slightly less than I did pre-baby although still more than my own ideal weight.

I did get a few stretch marks right at the end (42+3) but they faded very quickly. Belly button area doesn't look quite the same, bit of crepey sad skin, but I'm getting to work on that soon. Also I still have quite a dark linea negra.

The main thing currently is the GIANT bf boobs 😞

Tollygunge · 10/03/2016 07:13

I'm thinking about this. I swam five times a week with my 1st pregnancy but have no time to exercise with this one. I'm also starving a lot of the time. I was also back in gym when she was 6 weeks old. Not sure I will have motivation this time!

Artandco · 10/03/2016 07:13

2 weeks both times. I only really gained baby weight plus fluid etc so the weight was all pretty much gone straight after birth. The two weeks was just for stomach to go back in. I then lost way too much weight breastfeeding ( was back to 8 stone 2 weeks after babies born, then down to 7stone by 6months after and had to eat a silly amount of calories to get back up to 8stone - 3500 calories min a day)

suzannecaravaggio · 10/03/2016 07:22

Zero time, I didn't gain any body fat when pregnant
Immediately after my second was delivered the midwife said 'look at your flat stomach'

PalcumTowder · 10/03/2016 07:24

First time, about 9 months. Second time, she's 1 and I'm getting there.

Buckinbronco · 10/03/2016 07:35

My personality changed a bit during pregnancy. I had a very easy pregnancy but felt sad and miserable a fair bit and comfort ate. I have never done that in all my 36 years, I have been 8.5stone for 20 years and not changed (I am average height so a size 8-10 and one of those people who get referred to as skinny)

I found I would feel frustrated or a bit angry and just needed my mouth to be busy to distract. Also I didn't have any morning sickness so never lost weight. That said, I didn't start putting it on until about 20 weeks so it wasn't as though my brain went "oh, pregnant, let yourself go"

I was also active and walked 3 miles a day until 40 weeks. I worked until 38, commuting and travelling all over the country.

A lot of the weight I put on was what my MW referred to as breastfeeding weight- my legs and bottom became thick, something which had never happened before. It went with breastfeeding.

I put on 3 stone and lost 2 with the delivery. A traumatic delivery meant I was immobile for quite some time and it was about 3/4 months before I was capable of anything you might consider exercise.

I lost it all by 6-8 months, mainly when I returned to work and was busy and running around a lot. It was very depressing and I felt crap about it but I'm telling you this because I hope some of the posters who find it impossible to understand or sympathise with weight gain in pregnancy might do so a little more hearing about why it happened to "one of them"

Aussiemum78 · 10/03/2016 07:40

It was supposed to come back?

But seriously, about 3-9 months to maybe fit the same clothes. To have the same body? Never. Unless you are unusual, at some level your shape, muscle tone won't be exactly the same.

Getyercoat · 10/03/2016 07:42

I was in the shape of my life when I got pregnant, I'd been training hard five days a week. That slacked off but I did walk around 5 miles a day until the day before DS was born.
Put on about 2.5 stone in total.

I had bad postnatal anxiety which killed my usually healthy appetite, that and breastfeeding had me around 5lbs heeavier than prepregnancy weight 6 weeks after birth.
Five years on I'm around 4lbs heavier than I was before pregnancy.
My boobs went from a C to a DD and never went back!

suzannecaravaggio · 10/03/2016 07:46

at some level your shape, muscle tone won't be exactly the same
I don't see why that has to be the case?
Perhaps the trend to have babies later in life makes a difference?

Stillwishihadabs · 10/03/2016 07:53

I guess so Suzzane but apart from Maddona who has the same body at 45 as at 25 .

suzannecaravaggio · 10/03/2016 07:58

I'm 50, don't see any difference in my figure

Buckinbronco · 10/03/2016 07:58

No it's because the baby ripped them apart cry

Troika · 10/03/2016 07:58

All three of mine I've gone back to looking slim (clothed) within a couple of weeks.

However after my first I had to buy all new trousers as my shape had changed.

After my second I went far too skinny (high needs baby) but was not at all toned.

Third is only 2 weeks old, normal jeans too tight on the hips currently. Stomach looks flat when standing but is a jelly belly and does not look at all flat when seated. I've lost the weight off arms and legs. I weigh 6kg more than pre pregnancy, meaning I've lost just over half the baby weight.

Buckinbronco · 10/03/2016 07:59

It's not about what you can see though is it? It does affect your muscle tone, that's part of the reason the second delivers faster and you often get bigger more quickly second time Round. You might look the same but that doesn't much reflect what's going on inside

Stillwishihadabs · 10/03/2016 08:02

Then you are very unusual Suzzane and if we were all like you, cosmetic surgeons would be out of business.

suzannecaravaggio · 10/03/2016 08:06

I can see that if muscle and skin are stretched beyond a certain point then there is some damage or permanent change
I suppose it depends also on the condition of your abdominal muscles pre pregnancy.
Presume that when you talk about change in muscle tone you mean the midsection, or are you saying that all skeletal muscle is changed by pregnancy?

Buckinbronco · 10/03/2016 08:37

I wouldn't know to what extent women's muscles are affected - who would? It would presumably be different for everyone and not measureable.

Although from what I can gather the better your abs were, the worse it can be. More likely to seperate (mine did)
