To ask how long it took to get your figure back after having a baby?

And if it took longer the second time?

After DC1 my body went back to normal within 24hours of giving birth (flat tummy, no stretchmarks or saggy skin) and I wore non-maternity clothes home from hospital. I'm 32.

Everyone says the second time is different!

OP posts:
RoboticSealpup · 09/03/2016 12:33

I only have one, but my sister looks exactly the same after her second as she did before her first.

Burgerbobismydad · 09/03/2016 12:34

Never.

MagicPotion · 09/03/2016 12:36

My stomach has never really recovered from a big first baby and c-section, to be honest. Its fairly flat, but wobbly with stretchmarks a bit of an overhang.

Took me a long time to lose the weight after my first because I put on 4 bloody stone! About 18 months to shift it but I ate biscuits and didn't try that hard

Took about 9 months to get back to pre-preg weight after my second. Only put on 2.5 stone with that pregnancy, though.

Babies long done for me now. Am approaching 40 and DC are 11 and 7.

Overall my shape has changed - bigger boobs, slightly wider hips - but I'm the slimmest I've been since I was in my early twenties, now I have more 'me' time to exercise and look after myself. Wish I hadn't stressed so much about it all at the time!

Bythepath · 09/03/2016 12:38

I was lucky and with all 3 of mine I have been back in my size 10jeans within days. I have no stretch marks. I did however have 3 awful HG pregnancies with multiple hospital admissions so put on less than a stone each time.

19909ninty · 09/03/2016 12:43

Those who have their figure back so you mean you just fit in your old clothes straight away or full figure?

I was a size 6 again within a week of giving birth but I don't have my figure back I'm not sure I ever will but I had a 6 pack etc.

Skrewt · 09/03/2016 12:47

I snapped back after the first (but then kept on eating massive amounts after stopping breastfeeding so whooshed up to my heaviest ever non-pregnant weight so it took time to lose that) and after the second....well, 7 years in and I'm still trying. I am much fitter this time around - I run marathons - but my stomach will never be flat again if I insist on eating I think the key difference is that I was in my twenties have #1 and in my late 30's having #2.

Cerseirys · 09/03/2016 12:47

Back in my old clothes. Except bras of course as DS was a boob monster! Even so I only ever went up a cup size and am back to my old size now, albeit in a smaller band.

Pinkheart5915 · 09/03/2016 12:50

After ds took about 8 weeks

But I'm pregnant again now so will we see this time

Lurkedforever1 · 09/03/2016 12:50

Pretty much straightaway. Clothes fitted fine immediately and stomach flat, but probably about a week till my stomach looked good bare iyswim. Although having been incredibly fit and all lean muscle pre pregnancy, it took about 8 months to get my full figure back to how it was, my stomach went back to flat rather than a 6 pack magically appearing 24 hours after birth!

If I'm honest I've never really understood why people lose their figure when they're pregnant/ post birth in the first place. I understand not everyone has skin that pings back, so for many it can be months or even never for stretched stomach & breast skin to go back. And if you have a lot of muscle from very high levels of fitness then you have to ease up and then regain it. But the actual relatively common practice of gaining fat only to struggle to lose it again puzzles me. Surely easier just not to gain it in the first place?

YoJesse · 09/03/2016 12:52

I never really put baby weight due to morning sickness. (Not a diet I'd recommend)! My body does look saggier, untoned and just kind of empty now. My fault as I do zero exercise. I like the thought that if I put my mind to it I could tone up to my pre pregnancy body, one day........

rainbowontheway · 09/03/2016 12:55

I never got my figure back. I lost what little baby weight I had put on and toned up again but my pre-baby flat tummy never returned as I discovered I have diastasis recti (separated abdominal muscles) that only surgery can truly fix. So, I look as I did pre-baby elsewhere aside from looking 4 mths pregnant around my tummy. Am pregnant again now anyway. Interesting to see what happens after this one!

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 09/03/2016 12:55

I didn't put on much weight either time. I was back to normal very soon after DC1. I was naturally slim back then and had never lost my appetite in fact I was bf and getting thinner. This was probably before the competitiveness of celebs getting their figure back after babies, think my friends were similarly relaxed.

I took longer to get back into normal clothes second time around but it didn't occur to me to go on a diet or exercise regime, DC1 kept me fit chasing him. I didn't feel pressure and remained a few lbs heavier. It was daft of me not to get re-fitted for bras sooner though.

jamhot · 09/03/2016 12:57

DS is 10 months and I am still not there. I put on about 4.5 st total, and have 2 left to lose.

For me, it has been a combination of reasons.

  1. The only thing that eased my morning sickness was eating bread non stop. I gained 2.5 st in the first 3 months.
  2. I have always struggled to keep my weight down and had to exercise a lot to do so. I used to run/gym 6 days a week to keep my weight stable. I ran a marathon shortly before falling pregnant, for example. Unfortunately, I started to bleed after exercising, so after the 3rd threatened miscarriage, I was restricted to walking and slow swimming only.
  3. DS being forcibly evicted at 42+1 by emcs possibly didn't help my recovery.
  4. DS is a terrible sleeper and was a very unhappy newborn. For the first 4 months I survived by eating tunnocks tea cakes and buttered toast, one handed.
  5. DS naps about 20-45 mins a day, so trying to fit exercise in is difficult. Most days, having a nap myself or a shower wins.

It's a slow road for me, but I will get there.

mumofthemonsters808 · 09/03/2016 13:06

First baby, a good twelve months, my own fault because I did nothing but eat, I've never experienced hungar like it. I was even eating scraps off my DH plate. So I was left with four stone to get off me, thankfully my appetite returned to normal and I did a lot of exercise.
Second baby, I did not have that much to loose, perhaps half a stone and it flew off me. LUckily, I have no stretch marks but neither does my Mum or Sister and after working out for the last twelve months, my belly looks mighty fine for a middle aged woman.

BestBeforeDate · 09/03/2016 13:11

A couple of weeks with both of mine, but I didn't put on much weight with either pregnancy anyway. My 'bumps' were all baby!

I think it's probably just luck or genetics or something, I certainly didn't consciously watch my weight when I was pregnant, I've just always eaten healthily and continued to do so. I'm in my 60's now and my body is pretty much the same as it's always been (can't say the same about the face, but heigh-ho, that's life!)

AnotherEffingOrangeRevel · 09/03/2016 13:11

I was lucky and, like you OP, my stomach just went back to flat really quickly. First baby: within 24 hours. 2nd baby: within 2 days. Afterpains were agony, though, so I'm not sure all this quick "contracting quickly back to normal" is all that brilliant.

bossbabebot · 09/03/2016 13:13

I was 19 when I had DC1 - I went from nearly eight stone to nearly 14 stone. DC was only 4.5lbs - weight gain was mostly fluid as I had pre eclampsia and then eclampsia.

Back to eight stone by three months and all was fab

I was 24 when I had DC2 .... Again went up to 14 stone........

I didn't lose all of that weight...

25 years later and I am still trying to lose the baby weight...

Danglyweed · 09/03/2016 13:18

Dd1- early 20s and fit, never outgrew my normal clothes, flat tum the next day. Dd2 two years later much the same but took about a week for tummy to be flat. Dt's late 20s, no longer young or fit lol, had a wee jelly tummy that took a couple of weeks to shift, but general extra weight on legs and hips took about 3-4 months to shift naturally.

gymboywalton · 09/03/2016 13:19

to quote victoria wood- " twenty seconds after giving birth"

BirdInTheRoom · 09/03/2016 13:41

I put 4 stone on each time (3 babies) I am normally a slim size 10 but for some reason my body decides to pile on weight during pregnancy

  • I don't think ate a huge amount more, but something about being pregnant causes me to retain weight.

Anyway, I always seem to lose the first 2-3 stone within about 6-8 weeks very easily, and then the last bit takes about another 6 months with quite a bit of effort! Both strict dieting & exercise.

I get back to pre-pregnancy weight but each time I have become saggier! The skin can only stretch so much!

I think some people just ping back into shape and others don't IME. Sounds like you are a pinger OP so I doubt it will be much different for you this time you lucky thing!

SchnooSchnoo · 09/03/2016 13:59

Dc1: back into old clothes within a few weeks. Lost the weight and was slimmer that before by about 9 months. No effort made.

Dc2: 17 months and counting. Can't fit into maternity trousers that I bought when I was six months pregnant. Sigh.

SloaneRanger88 · 09/03/2016 14:11

I pinged back to a size 8 after my first. She was born on a Monday, I was back in my jeans on the Saturday, I remember the MV commenting on her visit.

With dd2 I gained a lot of weight. I didn't loose it until she was 2, but piled it back on with ds.

DS is now two, and I'm a round a stone more than I would like.

Hey lurked, glad you were able to get your figure back so soon.

Is it really so hard to understand that for some, it's harder to keep moving when pregnant and so the weight piles on?
Try and stretch that limagination just a little bit.....

thebestfurchinchilla · 09/03/2016 14:38

1st DC -I put on 2 stone. Most of the weight came off in first week. The remaining 4/5 pounds didn't come off until I stopped breastfeeding at 3 months.

2nd DC-Put on 3 stone. 2 stone was off after first week.Took about 3/4 months to loose all the rest after breast feeding.
