My friend is pregnant and is having a girl. She has chosen her DD name. It is a location-drink type name like Glasgow-buckfast but not quite.

I smiled and said it was unique and quietly changed the subject. She has told several people who I have also spoken to. They think its funny and the wee girl will laughted at or will become some sort of chavy/neddy type.

I think its a daft name but not the worst one I have heard recently. Usually I would say her DD her choice but as someone with an odd name who was bullied at school I feel like I should say something.

Aibu to say something? Surely she would have thought about the slagability of the name? Help.

Seven Stein?

littleshirleybeans · 27/02/2016 21:52

I can see the bridge from my house Grin

(Not strictly speaking a newbie here, used to be on a lot a few years ago then was scunnered when they changed the format a while back. Couldn't log in with my old details as I couldn't remember them 😂
Can't even really remember my old usernames though one was a very witty reference to breaking bad 😜)

sharonthewaspandthewineywall · 27/02/2016 21:55

I was thinking it might be pontefract pomagne
The name sounds like an accountancy practice

inlectorecumbit · 27/02/2016 22:02

The name is a bit long winded could you ask her if her DD is getting called the whole thing or shortened to EB or someting similar. You could say that it will be shortened by her friends when her DD hits school as it is a helluva mouthfuk

inlectorecumbit · 27/02/2016 22:03

Aghh should have previewed message

mouthfuk = mouthfull

littleshirleybeans · 27/02/2016 22:11

Waves back to inlectorecumbit

I think of Erskine as a boy's name and I associate it with Erskine Caldwell and Tobacco Road. And I know a sweet wee boy called Bailey.

Now if she IS naming her Erskine, she should the decent thing and make Ferry her middle name 😂

littleshirleybeans · 27/02/2016 22:12

Do the right thing,
That should have said.

WonderingAspie · 27/02/2016 22:43

Wow, your name is a Seven-? (I thought Jock too). Why did your mum go along with that!

Erskine-Bailey is a shit name. Bailey is a surname to me anyway (I know a few) and I'd never even heard of Erskine before.

TrixieBlue2016 · 27/02/2016 23:07

Sorry my DSS had a nightmare.

My name was Thomas Seven named after Thomas 'Tommy' Burns Celtic Manager. This was back in the day when Dads could register the birth without the mum being present. Yes he was pissed. And so was my mum when she found out.

I went to catholic school in Scotland and the teachers refused to use Seven instead of Thomas so I was known by my surname only as its a boys name. No one was allowed to use my first names at school. They got in trouble if they did. Again this was back in the day when teachers especially Catholic school teachers were not questioned. You can imagine I had lots of friends.Sad

I've changed around legally and am known as Seven. Very few people in my life now know about the Thomas part of my name. So its not that outing.

Hence my concerns with my friends DD name. Or I'm projecting.

Wow l bet Posh and Becks thought they were being original with Seven Smile
i like your story bu there are so may weird and wonderful names out there now with equally weird spelling of "normal" name that perhaps it won't be so much of an issue.
However l don't really like it at all much

Salmotrutta · 27/02/2016 23:15

Oh Trixie having read your last post that sounds really tough on you growing up. Sad

What was the rationale behind your Dad choosing Seven though? Was it his lucky number or something? Confused

TrixieBlue2016 · 27/02/2016 23:18

No I was his seventh child. Classy

Only1scoop · 27/02/2016 23:19

Op that is awful
Sad

WonderingAspie · 27/02/2016 23:21

That must have been very hard on you growing up! Thank goodness the rules on registering are probably a bit tighter now! I remember my friend saying her dad registered her and didn't know how to spell the name they had decided on so she has a different spelling.

Salmotrutta · 27/02/2016 23:21

Ah! I see.

Well, channel SevenOfNine in Star Trek - awesome character!

And I bet you're awesome too Trixie!

WonderingAspie · 27/02/2016 23:22

I was thinking SevenOfNine too. People, probably assume it's from Star trek.

BiscuitMillionaire · 27/02/2016 23:30

Back to the Erskine Bailey name - I think it will be OK. As long as she's comfortable in erskine.

badaboom, tish..

TrixieBlue2016 · 27/02/2016 23:38

My DSS loves it. He is fully Indoctrinated into the way of the Trek. I changed my name once I became an adult which is 16 in Scotland.

My friend and DH are coming for dinner tomorrow maybe I'll get DH to say something. He can be useful at saying the wrong thing at the right time. I could maybe mention about having to explain were it comes from (location of conception) with it being a bit TMI for their DD to explain at school.

OP posts:
inlectorecumbit · 28/02/2016 10:50

they are really trying to emulate the Beckhams tho!!
Think of Brooklyn (conception) and Harper (seven)

Hope your DH has very good communicating skills this could be tricky.
Good luck let us know how he gets on

inlectorecumbit · 28/02/2016 10:51

sorry forgot that you were Seven OP.
