My friend is pregnant and is having a girl. She has chosen her DD name. It is a location-drink type name like Glasgow-buckfast but not quite.

I smiled and said it was unique and quietly changed the subject. She has told several people who I have also spoken to. They think its funny and the wee girl will laughted at or will become some sort of chavy/neddy type.

I think its a daft name but not the worst one I have heard recently. Usually I would say her DD her choice but as someone with an odd name who was bullied at school I feel like I should say something.

Aibu to say something? Surely she would have thought about the slagability of the name? Help.

She seems set on the name and is planning to stencil it on the nursery wall.

Of the other people who have named their DC with a eh unique name most have asked my opinion based on my experience. Usually I would say maybe add a more conventional name as a middle name. That way their child can use it if they want. But she hasn't asked yet.

What experience is that? Surely we all have experience of knowing people with names. How odd.

epic thread!

I'd assume that an Erskine-Bailey was a boy.

Is she honouring ancestors by using surnames from the family trees?

DinosaursRoar · 27/02/2016 16:27

oh OP - you can't tease us with this - what's the name/drink combo? Please please please!!!

I would just say to her "you know, lots of my friends thought before they had the baby that they would be called a particular name, but when they met their little baby, felt it just didn't suit him or her and ended up using a different name. I'd not stensil it on the wall or personalise anything, or even tell many people in advance, because you don't want to be backed into a corner about something that's such an emotional decision." Then hope she changes her mind...

AnthonyBlanche · 27/02/2016 16:29

You're note wrong OP, it is a dreadful name. people will hear that and think alcoholic sickly sweet bridge in Scotland.

magpie17 · 27/02/2016 16:29

Oh that's not a great name! Bailey is ok for a boy though but Erskine? Why?

Don't say anything though, I recently told SIL I wasn't 'keen' on one of her potential name choices (it just slipped out, I genuinely do know better usually!) and she was very cross...

BirthdayBetty · 27/02/2016 16:29

Erskine-Bailey, oh dear.

magpie17 · 27/02/2016 16:30

Just read her name is for a girl! Then it's even worse.

oh X post with the name!

Erskine-Bailey, gosh, Erskine is a very male name. It's going to be a hard one to pull off for a little girl.

I'd just go with pushing her towards not personalising anything and "make sure it suits that little girl!" heres hoping she wants a more feminine name when her DD arrives...
