My friend is pregnant and is having a girl. She has chosen her DD name. It is a location-drink type name like Glasgow-buckfast but not quite.

I smiled and said it was unique and quietly changed the subject. She has told several people who I have also spoken to. They think its funny and the wee girl will laughted at or will become some sort of chavy/neddy type.

I think its a daft name but not the worst one I have heard recently. Usually I would say her DD her choice but as someone with an odd name who was bullied at school I feel like I should say something.

Aibu to say something? Surely she would have thought about the slagability of the name? Help.

Oh dear, it's not great.

But it's is certainly unique - if they ever type their child's name into Google it'll bring them straight to this thread... I hope you aren't identifiable from your username OP!

DropYourSword · 27/02/2016 16:32

Have loved some of the suggestions on here, but I don't think the actual name is too bad!!

Sparklycat · 27/02/2016 16:34

Oh it's not as bad as I thought, I agree it's quite masculine though.

TheCrimsonPleb · 27/02/2016 16:34

well there won't be any other kids with the same name.

Oysterbabe · 27/02/2016 16:37

My mum doesn't like my DD's name, although she hasn't said so outright. She keeps mentioning how it's different and that it's growing on her Grin
It's not unusual at all.

Sophia1984 · 27/02/2016 16:40

Do you know for sure that she and her family and friends aren't on Mumsnet?! Tbh, I don't think it's any of your business what she calls her kid. If Erskine doesn't end up suiting her DD, she can be called Bailey, which is perfectly nice :)

GooseberryRoolz · 27/02/2016 16:41

Is it two (family?) surnames maybe?

Birdsgottafly · 27/02/2016 16:43

I thought Bailey, when you said 'drink', which is an ok name and I view it now as unisex.

Erskine, I would assume is male and it's a good male name. If the little girl can carry it off, no-one will care a few years down the line.

Sallygoroundthemoon · 27/02/2016 16:48

Um. That's awful. Poor kiddy.

MerdeAlor · 27/02/2016 16:51

I like it. Can't see the problem with it.

AlpacaLypse · 27/02/2016 16:51

Erskine sounds definitely male, and so does Bailey.

Although the only Bailey I do know is actually a female. But she's a Labrador...

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 27/02/2016 16:55

I love Bailey... She can always go by that!

TrixieBlue2016 · 27/02/2016 16:58

She doesn't use MN. I googled the name and there seems to be a few other people who have that name.

Both names are nice on their own but she wants both names as one like Lilly-mae.

Eep it could be worse. Two surnames, basically. I wouldn't think of either the place (which I've never heard of) or the drink (which I think it's Bailey's??). Bailey is a semi-common girls name in the US, and there's a general US trend of calling girls by surnames (Madison, Harper etc). I actually don't think it sounds declasse. I wouldn't say anything.

Ginkypig · 27/02/2016 17:02

Iv heard much much worse!

She will probably use bailey for short.

MitzyLeFrouf · 27/02/2016 17:07

Erskine Bailey sounds like the name of a No Win, No Fee solicitors firm.

Bailey by itself is fine. Erskine is an odd choice for a girl though.

TheAlchemist101 · 27/02/2016 17:09

One or the other is fine for a name but hyphened together is a real mouthful. The only thing I'd say to your friend is to have either erskine or Bailey as the middle name

iwouldgoouttonight · 27/02/2016 17:14

Is anyone else disproportionately disappointed that it wasn't Slack Bottom-Screaming Orgasm?

TrixieBlue2016 · 27/02/2016 17:20

I believe they DTD in Erskine and she likes Baileys Grin

My name is a number followed by a well known Scottish footballers name. thanks Dad

Its not the worst name I've heard. Senga was one, kitelyn was another odd one.

Maybe I should ask her what the baby will be known as?

OP posts:
Inertia · 27/02/2016 17:23

Surely she has realised that any child with that name will endure horrendous bullying and be known as 'Foreskin' for her entire life?

MitzyLeFrouf · 27/02/2016 17:24

Erskine just reminds me of suicide. Why couldn't they have DTD somewhere with a prettier name like Skye.........................or Ecclefechan Wink

MrsEricBana · 27/02/2016 17:25

Oh dear, that's making Paris-Chardonnay look like a desirable choice, but don't think you can say much (though poss point out that she might be called foreskin at school?)

MrsEricBana · 27/02/2016 17:25

Ah sorry Inertia but ditto
