My friend is pregnant and is having a girl. She has chosen her DD name. It is a location-drink type name like Glasgow-buckfast but not quite.

I smiled and said it was unique and quietly changed the subject. She has told several people who I have also spoken to. They think its funny and the wee girl will laughted at or will become some sort of chavy/neddy type.

I think its a daft name but not the worst one I have heard recently. Usually I would say her DD her choice but as someone with an odd name who was bullied at school I feel like I should say something.

Aibu to say something? Surely she would have thought about the slagability of the name? Help.

inlectorecumbit · 27/02/2016 21:07

OP give us a clue please ??? my dog is sitting with his legs crossed waiting for a walk on the suicide bridge Wink.
I so neeeeeeed to know

NinaSimoneful · 27/02/2016 21:08

Ooh, I like Seven.

Littleallovertheshop · 27/02/2016 21:12

Haha inlectore. Bit off topic, but I genuinely believed the Erskine bridge was the wee bridge bit of the motor way you cross just after the airport turn off. Only discovered how wrong I was on a drive to Loch lomond about 5 years ago...

breezydoesit · 27/02/2016 21:13

For those saying Erskine is ok....you've never been to Erskine Hmm

CalleighDoodle · 27/02/2016 21:14

Love some of the suggestions here Grin.

Lightbulbon · 27/02/2016 21:15

I bet it was in the hotel overlooking the bridge!

There's no way anyone will use the full name so she ll prob end up as Bailey. at least they are spelling it correctly

diploddycus · 27/02/2016 21:16

little so did I! up until a few months ago I always wondered why it looked so much smaller than I'd thought.

Fizrim · 27/02/2016 21:19

The made-up names on the first couple of pages of this thread have really brightened up my Saturday evening!

greenfolder · 27/02/2016 21:22

Gosh, dd1 would have been Hitchin Stella.

squoosh · 27/02/2016 21:22

Bailey is tolerable but naming your kid after the place where they were conceived is vomtastic. Especially when that place is somewhere as unimpressive as Erskine.

VoldysGoneMouldy · 27/02/2016 21:25

Erskine-Bailey?

That is awful. Really really awful. You can't let her name a child that!!

SansaClegane · 27/02/2016 21:27

Oh OP, for a minute there I thought your name was Einstein (prime number = one; manager = Stein so I thought, "one stein... Onestein... Einstein??) but then I saw Seven and a manager's first name Grin too bad!

inlectorecumbit · 27/02/2016 21:29

Erskine is actually fine as a place, we have lived here for 24 years. People are nice schools are good, shopping pretty poor and we have a famous bridge Grin. Terrific views when dog walking on a sunny day (not too often). 15 minutes Loch Lomond 15 minutes to Glasgow.

RabbitSaysWoof · 27/02/2016 21:34

Are you more put out because she didn't ask your advice, with your wealth of knowledge? I know people with unusual names who don't feel the way you do, so I don't think you should project onto your friends like that.
I have a friend (girl) with a traditional boys name and she loved it so much she has done the same for her two dd's, all of their names would be unpopular on here.

thegiddylimit · 27/02/2016 21:35

I love that Paris Chardonnay now looks like a good option. Bailey is fine, I'd swap the names round: Bailey Erskine is a lot better.

Quite like the idea of location/alcohol combinations though: Oxford Cider, Glasgow Snakebite, Edinburgh Gin (I have a bottle of that downstairs). My kids would love me!

shockthemonkey · 27/02/2016 21:38

I don't get how Seven is either location or drink.

Seven-up is a drink... Severn river/bridge/crossing is a place.

Did you just give us the whole name then?

shockthemonkey · 27/02/2016 21:38

I must admit I find the idea quite Kardashianesque

outputgap · 27/02/2016 21:40

Could you suggest Erskine May so that it looks like she's named her child after a part of our uncodified constitution?

When she does her PPE application it's bound to work in her favour.

thegiddylimit · 27/02/2016 21:40

Seven Jock, Seven Billy, Seven Davie, Jock Seven, Billy Seven, Davie Seven. It must be Jock surely?

AarghGrrAargh · 27/02/2016 21:42

Actually I quite like it! But I've had one or two glasses of wine so that might be affecting my judgement...

TrixieBlue2016 · 27/02/2016 21:43

Rabbit no I'm not. She could call her DD Bob is she wanted. I just worry she hasn't thought it through. As I've said I like the names individually, its the whole name they concerns me. Has she thought about explaining the origin of the name to her DD? If she has cool. But I worry she hasn't. Kids (and adults) can be cruel.
