I see the WHO advises 2 years and just wondered .......

OP posts:

Bf isn't all down to the mother, a lot depends on circumstances and the child itself.
DS not at all really, after an elected cesarean he was dozy and I was sore!
DD1 came out knowing exactly what to do and self weaned at 18 months.
DD2 some initial problems and probably wouldn't have persevered had I not had DD1's example. We got the hang of it eventually and she didn't stop until she was almost 5 ( when she started school)

MegBusset · 26/02/2016 08:26

DS1 20 months. Stopped when a few months pg with DS2 as it became too painful.

DS2 14 months, he self weaned while teething. Thought I would go on longer and found the sudden stop quite upsetting, plus I had boobs of fire. He didn't care though and went straight on to a cup. Neither of them would ever take a bottle.

HazelBite · 26/02/2016 08:28

Ds1 10 months, stopped when I returned to work

Ds2, about the same but had to express as he was more interested in a bottle, would fall asleep at the breast and not feed properly.

Dt's 8 weeks and threw in the towel, they were so hungry the whole time breastfeeding them felt like an assault, I did not feel any guilt just pure relief!

MsJamieFraser · 26/02/2016 08:29

12 days before he was hospitalised as he was allergic to breast milk with ds2

not long with ds1, as I had pneumonia

GreenPetal94 · 26/02/2016 09:07

ds1 9 months, ds2 5 weeks (I had to go into hospital).

newmumwithquestions · 26/02/2016 09:12

The WHO 2 years is based on all countries - is including those with less access to clean water. A year is enough to give the benefit then into cows milk, although there is no harm in continuing. At least no harm for the kid - teeth and wriggly toddlers are not fun (hence I stopped at 13 months!)
Also doesn't have to be an all or nothing - can be very useful to mix breast and bottle.

TheDowagerCuntess · 26/02/2016 09:18

DC1 - 13 months. I was 4 months pregnant, and had to go overseas.

DC2 - 16 months.

SouthWalesVisitor · 26/02/2016 09:19

Four years and three months.
And this month her own breastfed dd is four years three months plus.
If I could get little hearts to twinkle all over the post, I would. Though perhaps these are more appropriate.

Well done, little one. You were an excellent baby and you are an excellent mother.

Really?? Hmm

midnightlurker · 26/02/2016 09:20

DS 15 months. He gradually lost interest and moved onto cows milk. DD is 16 months old now and still loves her milk.

Focusfocus · 26/02/2016 09:22

Has the op returned? Is this for an article?

EnoughAlready999 · 26/02/2016 09:35

newmumwithquestions "no harm in continuing. At least no harm to the kid"? What are you implying? Its beneficial for both mother & child! The longer you bf the lower your risk of breast cancer.

Witchend · 26/02/2016 10:16

3.2yo, 2.7yo, 3.9yo
I stopped when they wanted to. Ds fed when ill, and he was ill a lot, so he was later than the others. In fact he still likes to cuddle me in that position when he's ill and he's a lot older now!

I never set out to bf for that long. It was just more hassle to stop than to continue!

chasegirl · 26/02/2016 10:29

17 months for dd she self weaned.

Only1scoop · 26/02/2016 10:37

'If I could get little hearts to twinkle'

Pop over to the Huns....

You can get all kinds of post adornments I believe.

Only managed 6 weeks for dd, got mastitis in bith boobs and i reached conclusion of happy mummy happy baby as it was worst than childbirth the pain

EnjoyTheSimpleThingsInLife · 26/02/2016 10:57

DD1 just whilst we were in hospital

DD2 14 months

Beth2511 I had mastitis twice, I agree the pain was worse than giving birth!!

scrumptiouscrumpets · 26/02/2016 11:05

I initially planned to do 6 months, by then the worst was over and I started enjoying it. In the end, I would happily have gone on till DS was 2 years older or more, but he had other ideas and completely lost interest at 15 months old. You might want to follow the WHO guidelines but your baby might not, so I wouldn't make any plans too far in advance.

TwoLittleBlooms · 26/02/2016 11:12

8 months with dd2, I was expressing her feeds for that time (we had issues with feeding and faltering growth etc), although I also continued trying to directly breastfeed during that time as I wanted to bf as long as we could. I only stopped as my MH was suffering being continually attached to a pump most of the day and not getting out of the house. I still feel sad that I was unable to get bf up and going.

dd1, 6 weeks - had to stop due to medication.

MitzyLeFrouf · 26/02/2016 11:51

I'm glad we don't have twinkly star icons.

leedy · 26/02/2016 11:57

DS1 2.5 years (lost interest when I was pregnant), DS2 is 3.2 and still showing no signs of weaning, though he'll happily go a few days without feeds if I'm not there and only feeds once or twice a day if I am.

Didn't plan on feeding either of them for that long, I just ... didn't stop.

yetanotherdeskmove · 26/02/2016 12:04

KatyN · 26/02/2016 12:38

Two days.. Did my really work for us!

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 26/02/2016 12:44

Every feed excet 1 a day for 6 weeks. Then a mix of pumping & feeding until 4 months then just pumping for a bit. He's 8 months now & still get 1 x 7oz bottle of frozen milk a day. I have/had v low prolactin levels & the drs refused to prescribe more domperidone to me (even when HV got involve). It's such a shame because his latch was perfect, I haven't any doubt that if I hadn't had my supply issues we'd still be happily breastfeeding now.

I did a quick freezer check the other day. ..Ithink tthere's only enough milk left to get us to just over 9 months. I may have cried Sad
