www.telegraph.co.uk/women/life/only-7-per-cent-of-britons-consider-themselves-feminists/

''When split out by gender, women were more likely to identify as feminist, with nine per cent using the label compared to four per cent of men.''

Bertrand
Thank you for providing another great example.

DrSeussRevived accused me of saying the mass sexual assault in Cologne was "imaginary". She has conceded that this is a misrepresentation.

No irony there.

DrSeussRevived · 25/02/2016 09:25

I read a couple of the early Cologne threads. As they are In The News, not FWR, I've no idea how many posters on them identify as feminists, or even "extreme" feminists. Do you happen to know roughly?

DrSeussRevived · 25/02/2016 09:28

Wellllllll I also think your talking about cologne discussions as extreme feminist scare stories is a misrepresentation, and you posted first. Mine was a knee jerk reaction to yours, posted whilst grabbing a coffee and not using the best possible language. So, yeah, my irony meter twitched too.

SlowFJH · 25/02/2016 09:32

Not exact numbers no. But the most vehement views are arguing from a radical feminist banner -especially in the "anti-trans" threads.

The Cologne threads are simply horrific.

BertrandRussell · 25/02/2016 09:33

Hang on- before we move forward, can we sort out what seems to be confusion. SlowFJH -I really don't understand what you meant by - "Extremists aren't actually interested on solving problems. They just want to make you feel even more scared of the problem (Your gynaecologicist might be a man in drag!!!!!, Cologne!!!!!!) and then to tell you who to blame for the problem (The Patriarchy!!!)"

Are you really equating real concerns about mass sexual assault with imaginary concerns about a gynaecologist being a man in drag? I presume not- but it read that way to me.

BertrandRussell · 25/02/2016 09:34

What do you find horrific in the Cologne threads?

SlowFJH · 25/02/2016 09:35

I don't mind being quoted but I will call it out if someone puts words into my mouth. That's the beauty of a written debate I guess.. What you imagined I said (cos busy cos coffee) is not what I actually said.

Katenka · 25/02/2016 09:35

Tbh slow I don't get what you are saying either.

How was cologne misrepresented by extremists? Which extremists?

SlowFJH · 25/02/2016 09:37

The tone of one poster in particular. Another has been banned I believe. Won't name names here but would encourage readers to look at the "In the News" section.

DrSeussRevived · 25/02/2016 09:37

Thanks Bertrand, I think that's what threw me too, the conflation of real "cologne" with imaginary "gynaecogist in drag"

DrSeussRevived · 25/02/2016 09:38

So two posters in, what is it now, eight full threads?

SlowFJH · 25/02/2016 09:39

Oh jeez... here we go.

The misrepresentation comment was to DrSeussRevived. She accused me of saying that the attacks were imaginary.
I never said that.

SlowFJH · 25/02/2016 09:39

Yeah you're right. It was only two posters.

BertrandRussell · 25/02/2016 09:41

Slow, I do think if several people misunderstand you it might be worth thinking about whether you could have been clearer, rather than assuming you are being misrepresented!

Once again, I'm checking your meaning. Are you saying that the Cologne threads (I think there were 4 weren't there?) were rendered horrific by two posters- one of whom has now been banned?

DrSeussRevived · 25/02/2016 09:42

I never said that you thought the attacks were imaginary.

I said that "mass sexual assaults are not an imaginary problem"

Meaning that they are a real problem.

Unlike "gynaecologist in drag" which I don't think is focussed on to any degree as a real problem.

Hope that makes it clearer.

DrSeussRevived · 25/02/2016 09:45

And, to be even clearer, what I object to in your "gynaecologist in drag" point is the "in drag" part.

Katenka · 25/02/2016 09:45

Extremists aren't actually interested on solving problems. They just want to make you feel even more scared of the problem (Your gynaecologicist might be a man in drag!!!!!, Cologne!!!!!!) and then to tell you who to blame for the problem (The Patriarchy!!!)

I am obviously misunderstanding. I apologise. But I don't get what you are getting at.

SamanthaBrique · 25/02/2016 09:45

I haven't taken part in any of the Cologne threads, but I have read several of them and unfortunately there is a divide between people genuinely concerned about women's safety and your bog-standard bigot (eg the poster who claims that if we have too many Muslim immigrants then dogs won't be allowed in taxis) who never cared about the number of white British men who abuse women already. So that could be what slow is referring to.

DrSeussRevived · 25/02/2016 09:54

Thanks Samantha. I can well believe that!

SlowFJH · 25/02/2016 09:55

I've stopped bothering reading the Trans and Cologne threads because the general tone seems to be extremist in my opinion. Either extremist in inflating threats / dangers or aggressive in shouting down anyone who tries to express a more balanced assessment of facts.

DrSeussRevived · 25/02/2016 09:57

I'm quite surprised by slow's assertion that such posters are also "extremist feminists" - I will have to take a look at the more recent threads.

SlowFJH · 25/02/2016 10:02

I said you said. What it's like debating a feminist...
Hmm

Let me know if this is still confusing
Trans
Several of the threads here appear to inflate the risks to women's safety.

SEPARATE POINT - COLOGNE
Several of the threads here have a particularly nasty tone.

THE COLOGNE ATTACKS WERE NOT IMAGINARY

Let me know if you are still confused

BertrandRussell · 25/02/2016 10:04

Right. I agree with all three points.

Next?

Katenka · 25/02/2016 10:06

Thank you for clarifying. Yes that's clear enough now
