I think it's an actual poem but not certain....either way it's frigging stupid. We all, as adults have to take responsibility for ourselves. This post seems to suggest that being an eternal backpacker is a good idea!

I don't think so and I suspect it was written by someone in their late 20s who still has the energy to "bathe in bio-luminescence and lie in a dirt road staring at the moon"

FFS. Hmm

I will never be a well behaved woman.

I would rather pass my days lying in the middle of dirt roads, staring at the full moon with a bottle of summer red in my palms.

I would rather have kids when it suits me, not when society expects or throws shoulds.

I would rather live in a hammock on a beach for six months, and write like my soul means it.

I would rather be horribly broke at times, than married to a job because a mortgage payment has my ass on a hook.

I would rather own moments, than investments.

I would rather eat alone, than sit with women who bore me at 'Wives’ Night.”

I would rather swim naked with bioluminescence, have it fall like fireflies from my hair, my breasts, my back.

I would rather do handstands naked in the moonlight when no one’s watching than pick bridesmaid dresses.

I would rather drink seven year old rum from a sandy bottle, smell of smoke and ash than sit in church.

I would rather learn from life than rack up debt, in a desk.

I would rather drink the ocean, again and again—celebrate being madly alive.

I would rather my love be defined by love itself, and nothing more or less.

I don’t need a ring on my finger to prove that I am in love.

I would rather take the chicken bus, than spend useless money in safe gated communities. Sit beside a goat, listen to raggaeton and eat green mango with sugar in a plastic bag sold from the woman who harasses the bus each time it stops.

I do not need a degree to prove that I am intelligent.

I do not need to own a piece of earth with some wood on top of it—to feel successful. No one truly owns the land, anyway—we just think we do.

My savings account has diddly to do with my richness.
I would rather sprawl my single ass out like a lioness each morning and enjoy each corner of my empty bed.

I will take a job I love and freedom over a pension, any day.

I will not work and work and work to live when my body is old and I am tired.

Stocks are for people who get boners from money.

Not everyone should have kids, and my eggs aren’t expiring.

I will not drink the societal Kool-Aid on a bus, nor will I drink it on a train.
Not on a plane, with a goat, in the rain, in the dark, in a tree, with a fox, in a box!

I will not jump through societies’ hoops and red tape, the treasure hunt in the rat race we chase.

If we must have milestones—mine will be measured by how much joy I have collected at the end of each day and how often in this life I have truly, deeply, opened.

Seek, see, love, do.

Sooo, no one judge me for my 'krazzeee' choices, but I'll just sit here in my cloud of patchouli, astride a goat with hemp legs looking at the mooooon and judge you shitty old money-mad lot and your crappy little 'Wives Clubs' (wtf is that)?

My twenty year old self would have been nodding earnestly. My 40 year old self is bloody grateful I'm not 20 anymore.

Deadly pretentious and try hard. Sounded about as authentic as a Prada bag on ebay.

acasualobserver · 24/02/2016 10:42

I'm actually shocked that this is a real person and the op thinks it's ok to do this

I think some people look for things to be shocked about.

PaulAnkaTheDog · 24/02/2016 10:44

Oh ffs. Has someone actually reported the entire thread?! Pathetic! Report the couple of posts you don't like, not the entire thing!

MattDillonsPants · 24/02/2016 10:48

OP here....I believe only one person made a mean comment about her looks and it wasn't me. Either way, she's in the public eye isn't she? Using social media as a tool to make a living...putting her work out there for criticism. People can't expect to share their art without people giving their opinion.

Or is MN that precious now that this isn't allowed? Surely this thread and the discussion of the piece is no different than us discussing a novel? Or a film? Even if we're not positive about it...it's allowed.

OP posts:
whatdoIget · 24/02/2016 10:48

Yes I've reported the thread. You wanna make something of it? Huh? Perhaps reporting the posts would have been better, you may be right. Anyway I'm sure mnhq can decide what they think is best

LittleLionMansMummy · 24/02/2016 10:48

She doesn't look like an older woman though. She looks about the age her writing suggests she might be.

Fwiw whatdoIget I understand where you're coming from. A piss taking thread accompanied by an 'outing' of the person whose writing everyone is taking the piss out of does seem somewhat unkind. If it were me on the receiving end I might feel like I was back at school being bullied for thinking, feeling, behaving or looking differently.

whatdoIget · 24/02/2016 10:48

Of course it's different from discussing a film or a novel Confused

PaulAnkaTheDog · 24/02/2016 10:48

I've just had a look at the woman's instagram. Someone has left a comment on it linking this thread. That someone has an instagram with zero pictures, followers or person following. Which means someone here has taken it upon themselves to let her know to stir up trouble? Because it's definitely not to help her.

Fucking pathetic.

Furiosa · 24/02/2016 10:49

You wanna make something of it? Huh?

Hahahahahahahahahahaha Grin

This is the thread that keeps on giving!

MattDillonsPants · 24/02/2016 10:49

Well her looks are irrelevant aren't they Lion. There's no outing here....she's quite open about her writing and about sharing it. HOw is that outing? She's not on here writing it in secret!

OP posts:
PaulAnkaTheDog · 24/02/2016 10:50

You wanna make something of it? Huh?

Ummmm, what?

MattDillonsPants · 24/02/2016 10:50

WhatdoIget why is it different? THis is her art I believe.

OP posts:
MattDillonsPants · 24/02/2016 10:51

Paul trouble schmouble. She's in the public arena and stuff like this is gold to those who make a living on social media.

OP posts:
TwatMagnet · 24/02/2016 10:52

That is bloody pathetic Paul - I agree. FWIW I'm also cracking on a bit and I also don't like personal put-downs (although I'm not convinced that particular dislike comes with age - nobody should be making anyone feel small on account of their appearance. That's never ok) but come on - reporting the whole thread? Total overreaction.

PaulAnkaTheDog · 24/02/2016 10:52

I wasn't taking a pop at you op, I was taking a pop at whoever started up an instagram, just to link the woman to this thread. It's pathetic.

TurtleEclipseofTheHeart · 24/02/2016 10:52

Eurgh, this reminds me of being at uni; almost everyone I met loved "On the Road" because it was about being a free spirit, seeing the world, being counter-cultural etc and they saw it as aspirational. When I read it all I could think was that the main character kept going back to his mum to get money (could have been an aunt, I forget), and was just swanning around with all his privilege being a dick. I met soooo many trustafarians who could afford to go travelling despite having low-paid jobs. Of course they bloody could- they could spend their twenties being faux-hippy wankers, bankrolled by mummy and daddy, then they would get given a deposit for a house and a plum job from one of their "contacts" when they decided that lifestyle wasn't for them anymore. So yeh, that poem is a big pile of condescending, entitled shite. Grin

Was it Fanta from glass bottles?

All from glass bottles, yes! I had a hierarchy of what I'd drink... first choice was cold Coke, second choice was more or less anything else cold (including Fanta from glass bottles), third choice was warm Coke, fourth choice was warm ginger beer, fifth choice wait till I got home... anything other than Coke or ginger beer warm was vile!

StealthPolarBear · 24/02/2016 10:53

The Fox, box bit is a Dr Seuss green eggs and ham reference. I quite liked that bit.

whatdoIget · 24/02/2016 10:55

I just thought if I reported the thread, then mnhq could read it and make a decision on which posts could stay or go and whether the whole thread should go. Isn't that what happens?

TwatMagnet · 24/02/2016 10:55

I drank a bottle of warm pineapple juice at Ivory Coast airport once. That had an air of luminescence about it Grin and even now my internals organs glow in the dark!

RhodaBull · 24/02/2016 10:55

Fancy reporting the thread!

It's so Facebooky: dh got reprimanded for making a jokey comment about his friend's new coat on friend's FB. Apparently it's not in the spirit of FB to make derogatory comments. So we all have to be lovely and nice and supportive. Of course no one would advocate out and out meanness, but if you can't take the mickey out of someone a bit, especially someone as pompous-sounding as the poet under discussion, then life will become very blah. Perhaps that is the way of the future: instead of the authorities burning books there will be Humour Police.

Lilifer · 24/02/2016 10:55

obviously a Trustafarian . No need to worry about a money when you have plenty of it in the bank...

LittleLionMansMummy · 24/02/2016 10:55

They're not irrelevant if someone else has raised it, no. I was replying to whatdoIget about being an older woman.

The fact that someone has linked this discussion on her instagram kind of proves my point that this smacks of bullying. Poor woman. I doubt she thought that writing from her heart (which actually seems quite genuine whether or not you like it) would meet with such derision.

Lilifer · 24/02/2016 10:57

by the way why are we even calling this a poem? I just read it as some badly worded random thoughts, it never even occurred to me that it was meant to be a poem.
