to wonder if people would admit to voting "leave" in the EU Referendum?

Apparently there is a lot of inconsistency in answers when pollsters phone people and ask for their decision on Brexit compared to answers given online (respondents are more likely to say they will vote to "remain" on the phone but in online polls say they will vote to "leave"). I wonder if people admitting that they are going to vote "leave" is seen as taboo in the same way that nobody apparently voted for the Tories in the GE Grin. If you are intending to vote "leave" would you admit it to friends and family (especially if you think they are more likely to vote "remain") or are you afraid of being called a Little Englander?

Yeah human rights stuff is separate.

Which is probably a good thing.

BlueJug · 20/02/2016 19:34

It is only on MN (so far) that a vote to leave has been equated with lack of education

OttiliaVonBCup · 20/02/2016 19:40

I really think the blaming, shaming and putting labels for deciding how to vote has no place in discussing the referendum.

Roonerspism · 20/02/2016 19:41

I'm a vote to leave. My family asserted that the profile of such voters is bring of lower intelligence and ignorance Confused

I really don't care. I have a plethora of reasons for wanting out the bureaucratic, expensive shambles that is the EU.

Interestingly, I was a staunchly against Scottish independence.

Nottodaythankyouorever · 20/02/2016 19:43

Iain Duncan Smith, Michael Gove and Chris Grayling all want to leave. That tells me all I need to know.

Blair, Cleg are for in and Corbyn hasn't said, but he is a HUGE Eurosceptic so even if he came down on in because he was told to so?

Are people seriously going to vote because of who may vote the same way?

This is a cross party issue.

I can't stand Farage or Galloway at all bit it wouldn't stop me voting the same way as them.

Chipstick10 · 20/02/2016 19:45

I'm a proud outer. I hate the nasty little bureaucratic little club. All my family are out. Not ashamed to say it at all.

Redbindippers101 · 20/02/2016 19:45

I'm admitting it, GET US OUT!

Shutthatdoor · 20/02/2016 19:46

I'm a vote to leave. My family asserted that the profile of such voters is bring of lower intelligence and ignorance

Best tell my DH then who has a first class degree and doctorate from Cambridge...

Different people are voting different ways for different reasons.

Roonerspism · 20/02/2016 19:48

That makes me feel a bit better shut. I have a first class degree myself so I don't think i am the thickest person around, so my family's comment amused me Grin

Viviennemary · 20/02/2016 19:48

I'm voting to leave but don't know anyone else who is. I probably don't know the right people.

hefzi · 20/02/2016 19:49

Hell, yes - I will even be campaigning on behalf of the "Leave" campaign, and am taking unpaid leave to enable me to do so! People are free to call me a "Little Englander" if they like - I am not impressed by people who form opinions about me based on not knowing the facts Grin

I'd like to hope there will be "shy leavers" - but our nation is terribly conservative and, unfortunately for your grandchildren, is likely to end up voting to remain.

Redbindippers101 · 20/02/2016 19:50

Roonerspism
You can tell your family that I've got a BSc(Hons) plus a MSc with Distinction. It's still out.

Stepmummyx3 · 20/02/2016 19:50

The only way forward for the UK is out.. The £55 MILLON we give to the European Union EVERY day I think would be better spent on the NHS and education.

Brokenbiscuit · 20/02/2016 19:56

I think it's foolish to equate "out" voters with Little Englanders. There are undoubtedly valid arguments on both sides of the debate.

Unfortunately, many of the more vocal "out" campaigners are Little Englanders, and people get tarred by the same brush. That would certainly bother me if I were inclined to vote for leaving!

OTheHugeManatee · 20/02/2016 19:58

First from Oxbridge here, and voting Leave. Not posting this to brag but just to say up yours to Roonerspism's parents Grin

Lazy claims about intelligence and particular political views are just that: lazy.

poppiesanddaisies · 20/02/2016 19:58

Was your degree in politics manatee? :)

AMouseLivedinaWindMill · 20/02/2016 19:59

I couldn't tell you what 'properly' looked like, I'm not a politician, but it would start with going back to the bare bones without actually abandoning hard won things like holiday rights for part time workers.

Maybe this sort of horrific attitude from Juncker being wiped out would be a start:

"Jean-Claude Juncker, who explained the introduction of the Euro like this: “We decide on something, leave it lying around and wait and see what happens.

If no one kicks up a fuss, because most people don't understand what has been decided, we continue step by step until there is no turning back.”
^^

Horrific surely?

Helmetbymidnight · 20/02/2016 19:59

Othehuge! One of my favourite posters- I'm disappointed in you ;)

OTheHugeManatee · 20/02/2016 20:01

Disappointed? Why? Confused

Is it because I don't have a Masters?

RortyCrankle · 20/02/2016 20:03

I don't understand why would one be reluctant to admit to voting Leave?

I am a Conservative voter and will be voting Leave.

AMouseLivedinaWindMill · 20/02/2016 20:17

Its probably the Farage connotations, its been said, now he has helped to get us this referendum the best thing he can do is step well back from the whole thing Grin

It takes two individuals - a president and a prime minister - Reagan and Thatcher, Blair and Bush ... and the special relationship will be back on, or off as the case may be. Cameron and Obama don't have quite the same chemistry but that can and probably will change in a heartbeat

I agree, and generally US is very inward looking. I wouldn't act on what they say they will or will not do.

Forgive me, but are we not the 5th wealthiest nation/economy in the world?

I think it will be shakey for a while but look at HSBC for instance, when the chips are down, do they want their HQ in risky China/HK with riots etc, and strange way of controlling economy or do they want, a UK which may vote to leave the EU. They chose the UK.

I think it will be a massive boost to this country to leave.

OvariesBeforeBrovaries · 20/02/2016 20:18

Ah. If human rights is separate, my vote may be changing to leave. I need to do a lot more reading, I really don't know at the moment. It does worry me that IDS and co want out - generally, I'm against anything they want.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 20/02/2016 20:18

I will vote to stay. I don't care in the slightest what deal Cameron gets/has got.

It makes no difference to me. I don't know anyone who says they will vote to leave.

We were talking about it at work yesterday. Colleagues range from conservative Conservative, liberal Conservative, not nearly by a long way as left wing Labour as she used to be (i. e. me) to quite left wing but not a Corbynista.

As we are not in London, we are not part of the metropolitan, cultural elite (although 2 have been known to express the view that if you can't live in London and have to live in the UK, Edinburgh is the next best thing)

As with the Scottish indy referendum (no from day one) it's nota question I need to ponder.

HaveIGotAClue · 20/02/2016 20:25

Ireland is very lucrative to foreign investment. High technological skills, gateway to the EU, a moderate climate (YES - our ridicilously miserable climate is why some go for us (no potential for hurricanes etc.))

We are English speaking. And the clincher - we offer a ridiculously low corporate tax rate, and there are about 100 loopholes meaning they can end up paying as low as 2.5% Hmm

Good for jobs for Ireland, shite for revenue for Ireland.

All that said - I am extremely interested to read David McWilliams' piece tomorrow.
