My friend has a teenager who left school last year. Although her child is in college, she also has a job. But she hasn't declared that her DD works to child benefit - the job is cash in hand. I don't begrudge any kid earning a bit of money but isn't this fraud? She's always been one to voice opinions about people on benefits, even slagging off a family member once who sold things over the course of a month (their own possessions) because they were moving into a smaller house - basically saying they were on benefits and the money should have been declared.
AIBU to think that she's being a hypocrite? Tbh I think the main reason she's doing it is so that her ex's maintenance amount doesn't change due to the child earning money. It's not just a Saturday job either she works some evenings and days while not at college - plus extra during holidays.

If she is in full time college, and living with her mum, then her mum is entitled to child benefit still isn't she? Irrespective of any part time job

I know someone who was found out because one of the children she was claiming for, put in a claim for benefits which triggered of a fraud investigation of hers.

Though if the child is at college then she may still be entitled to CB as the child is in education.

It wouldn't affect the maintainance paid by the child's father plus a teenager of a certain age wouldn't pay tax and NI on minimal wages anyway. Yanbu to think she is a hypocrite but you would be u if you got involved especially if she is that much of a friend.

Child benefit is payable while teenager is in FT education (never mind that many of the courses are rather more part time...)

Child benefit isn't affected by a child's earnings. Both my children worked through college, part-time minimum wage jobs, we still claimed child benefit. It goes on the parent's income not the child's.

If she's a teenager in education then her mother is perfectly entitled to claim CB.

First of all - not ONCE did I say I was going to get involved.
BUT my friend is always so judgemental about people on benefits - yet she bragged over Christmas that her DD had 'grafted her arse off and earned over 5 ton'
Now like I said I don't begrudge it, BUT if she criticises people for selling a few of their own possessions when on benefits surely she shouldn't claim child benefit for a child who earns that much money in two weeks. IMO it's hypocritical but obviously not

Not that it matters but she looks down on people claim tax credits as well - because she doesn't. I refrained from telling her I do because I didn't fancy being judged myself because I don't earn as much as she does

My son earnt £400 last Christmas. It was a temp job and he then earnt nothing until he picked up more work in the Spring.
Fuck all to do with CB and no need for us to stop his child benefit
Once he leaves full time education it will stop anyway
