Hi Mumsnetters,

I'd be interested to read your opinions about this poster. I don't want to say right now what I think about it, as I'd like to know how you'd interpret it.

TIA,
Megadude

Stephen Lawrence and your friend Dwayne Brooks. Stay away from bus stops near your home because there be murderous racists there and they will be compelled to murder you.

It's just a bit of friendly advice. Doesn't everyone know that black people are at risk in certain areas of Britain where white racists want to kill them. Just trying to be helpful. Why are you getting so annoyed?

TooOldForGlitter · 19/02/2016 20:31

limited If that exact poster went up in a railway station I can imagine there would be absolute uproar. God that's really irritated me now. People would be falling all over themselves to condemn it.

noddingoff · 19/02/2016 20:32

Yep, or a picture of someone who looks middle eastern or with a veil walking alone past some racist graffiti on a dimly lit wall and a warning to them to "take care".

TooOldForGlitter · 19/02/2016 20:34

I meant that in response to the 'gay bashers' but it applies equally to the above.

limitedperiodonly · 19/02/2016 20:35

All of it. I agree with you

BlondeOnATreadmill · 19/02/2016 20:36

Jeepers, is this still going? It was a bit of advice! Aaaaaarghhh!

TooOldForGlitter · 19/02/2016 20:37

See above Blonde.

BlondeOnATreadmill · 19/02/2016 20:43

Glitter I can't RTFT - it's 29 pages.

What concerns me, is that a Man doesn't like the fact that there is a Poster is in a train station telling girls to take care. Why doesn't he like that? Wouldn't he want his sister to take care? His Mum? His GF?

FFS, he is over thinking it.

I hate over analysing!

MrsHathaway · 19/02/2016 20:45

Blonde, if you can't be arsed to read our conversation, why do you think you can jump into it and tell us there's nothing to argue about?

Why is your opinion so fucking important and unique that it merits an airing without the simple courtesy of catching up?

limitedperiodonly · 19/02/2016 20:45

Twenty-nine pages. I'm so sorry for you BlondeOnATreadmill. Do you want a blankie and a mug of warm milk?

TooOldForGlitter · 19/02/2016 20:50

I just meant the few posts above which compare singling out women to singling out gay or black people. I feel that it illustrates the point reeeeeally well.

I have to ask, Itsmine, are you a woman?

MrsHathaway · 19/02/2016 20:55

In summary a fairly equal spilt between those who agree it a safety poster like many others, and others who feel it is victim blaming and 'propping up rape cutlure' .

Minus the sarcasm, that's a fairly accurate summary.

But there's quite a few people also saying "fuck sake, it's a shit poster if this many people can take this offensive message from it, regardless of what was intended". And some other interesting thoughts and tangents. Worth a read.

BertrandRussell · 19/02/2016 21:01

"n summary a fairly equal spilt between those who agree it a safety poster like many others," None of which feature men- despite the fact that young men are the most likely group to be the victims of violence....

TooOldForGlitter · 19/02/2016 21:07

and none of which taking into account the excellent posts by limited which ask how we'd feel about a, gay people don't go here or a black people avoid here poster.

I am very lucky to have been born and live in a very civilised country. I do not think it too much to expect of other people with that good fortune not to sexually assault and rape me.

If other people come to this country with other ideas I think it's reasonable to tell them that they should give their heads a wobble or fuck off.

Sadly, I think we still have quite a way to go with British-born men and women before we start on the forriners.

TooOldForGlitter · 19/02/2016 21:29

Nothing on the 'homophobic posters' link that you posted is remotely comparable. None of it says, do a and b won't happen.

BertrandRussell · 19/02/2016 21:30

"I would imagine though that the people behind the afore mentioned 'safety info for men' have possibly circulated their advice be it as a poster or maybe leaflets?" I have never, ever seen a poster advising young men to stick together, not get drunk and look after each other. I have seen several differerent posters offering the same advice to women. Itsmine WHY are you so sure that similar advice is offered to men? When there is no evidence at all that it is?

TooOldForGlitter · 19/02/2016 21:30

In fact having looked again, they all seem to be supporting people to contact various support organisations.

limitedperiodonly · 19/02/2016 21:46

Actually, people on this thread remind me that I don't live in a civilised country. But I don't live in a war zone, so I naively thought that women here ought not go in fear of rape.

TooOldForGlitter · 19/02/2016 21:53

See, I don't think it's the fear of rape. I'm out tomorrow night, off to see a band, only two of us going and we live at opposite ends of town. I hate queing at the taxi rank so I'll walk home. I'm not scared of being raped. If I was, the fear of how it'd be my fault is right at the front of my mind.
