To wonder what idiot invented scented sanitary pads and tampons?

Because it seems to be getting harder to buy the non-scented kind these days! But honestly, who thought it was a good idea to put something heavily perfumed so fanjo-adjacent? AIBU to think it was probably a man?

And yes, I know I should probably use a mooncup and reusable pads but I'm not quite there yet!

I hope they don't extend this to incontience pads. We are going up stinking of air freshners in some nursing home!

TheToys · 15/02/2016 23:34

I couldn't use reusables, as the would end up in a right state and cleaning them would be a pain. Also, as I only run the washing machine once or twice a week max (always wait until I have a fullish load and dont tend to separate my laundry very much), they would be sitting there stinking the place out for too long. If someone cleaned them out for me I'd use them while at home (out and about don't want to be carrying around soiled pads in a bag).

LongHardStare · 15/02/2016 23:35

carefreeeee - I just looked at the site you recommended as a potential convert. Unfortunately all the options are tie dye or hideously brightly coloured. You'd think most women after reusable are going to want natural undyed but apparently not...

FankEweVeryMuch · 15/02/2016 23:39

Just checked out the options on ocado (i've been pregnant and breastfeeding since this time last year so no need for regular Sanpro) and they have a good non scented range including always silk.

Ineedmorepatience · 16/02/2016 00:05

Both pink and green body form are now revoltingly scented Angry Hmm

thickgit · 16/02/2016 00:18

Campaign please!!!
it's unbelievable.

novemberchild · 16/02/2016 00:47

I, too, love Natracare. Buy them in bulk from Amazon. You can get them from Waitrose, too. No plastic, no perfume. I bought a Mooncup but can seem to feel it. Am not sure why, or if it has any connection with a retroverted uterus.

I've noticed a lack of unscented 'intimate wash' as well. The only one I have ever found is Sliquid Splash, and that is like the Holy Grail to get hold of. You would think that genitals and perfume would obviously not mix, but apparently our bodies stink...

Then there is the scented toilet paper as well...it is everywhere to the point I now carry Kleenex wherever I go. Argh!

kali110 · 16/02/2016 01:17

Maybe not everybody has a problem with them. I honestly cannot tell who is wearing them and when and i have friends who buy them.
I buy them and they don't give me thrush. I don't struggle to buy unscented ones either Confused

kali110 · 16/02/2016 01:19

Akire kodex do nightime pads without wings. I hate wings too

georgetteheyersbonnet · 16/02/2016 01:24

Since having DD because of this issue I only now buy the thin boots maternity pads for normal periods - they're longer than regular pads but that's all to the good. No scent and they are still very thin! I also buy Cottons from Boots when I can find them. I can't even use scented shower gel or I immediately get skin irritation and/or thrush so scented pads are a complete no-no!

Namechangenell · 16/02/2016 01:25

I live in the US and almost started a thread about this last week. What pissed me off was that in my local Target, the regular tampons (Tampax regular, pack of 36) were on sale for $6.99, the scented equivalent (Tampax regular scented, pack of 36) were on sale for $5.49. Maybe it's an offer I thought? But no, every scented towel or tampon on the shelf was cheaper than the stink free version... Just why?!

FlorisApple · 16/02/2016 01:32

Wow! I have found my people! Hate hate hate scented pads (and most other scented products, now actually.) I don't know if my sense of smell has just become more sensitive since having children or what, but all sorts of things make me want to heave, especially laundry liquids and fabric conditioners...blech. I use a mooncup, but I don't love it and I find it uncomfortable for the first few days of my period. Better than scented sanpro though.

WanderingTrolley1 · 16/02/2016 02:03

They are awful.

VenusRising · 16/02/2016 02:20

I use boots own brand and they're unscented.

Having said that I can't even have the plastics covering for easier flow through or whatever it's branded as, and need a cottony texture on the surface or I have absolutely raging thrush.

I also use teen Lilettes pads as they're lovely and soft and have no scent.

I can't even use loo roll anymore except really cheap stuff from pound land. Any quilting aloe covered printed or seasonal stuff gives me raging thrush too.

I wear cotton granny knickers also as anything with fucking lace on it or elastane in it gives me raging thrush as well.

I'm getting raging thrush just posting about scented or treated stuff for my fanjo I think!

I like the plain unscented things. I do think this sanitising of women's bits if a feminist issue. Clean fannys don't smell. All these new products for specialist washing strikes me as a shaming exercise.

Thanks to the pp who made the list. Add boots own brand and Lilettes teens pads please. And I think I saw pound land as a source for unscented sanpro also upthread. Gets out spreadsheet....

ActivelyAnxious · 16/02/2016 08:48

Argh... I've used Bodyform for years but lately they've started leaving behind half of their 'stickiness' on my knickers, more or less ruining them for subsequent use (it doesn't wash off and is a bit uncomfortable!) So I decided to try a new type - not a fan of normal Always as they feel too 'plastic' to me so tried Always 'soft and fit'. Nothing on the package to say they are scented and indeed the package indicates that there is a scented option available. But of course when I open them the feckers are 'lightly' scented.

I am seriously considering going for a mooncup and then reusable pantyliners for the rest of the time. I've been thinking for years that I just have regular sweat rash or something like that - this thread has made me realise it's probably the sanpro!

Excited101 · 16/02/2016 08:53

Pound land, yes! That was me. I managed to find unscented old style always night in there- in the blue packet. I couldn't even get that from massive sainsburys without it being scented. My big sainsburys does do always ultra silk and always ultra long (I think) silk but not the night variety.

I keep buying loads in the hope they'll realise that the scented stuff isn't as popular...

Marzipants · 16/02/2016 08:54

Oh yes, campaign please!

I now find I'm paying extra for special "unscented" pads. Madness, to rinse yet more cash from us. And the message it's sending is repugnant like the smell.

Excited101 · 16/02/2016 08:55

Soft and fit! That's the one! They're not scented are they?? I didn't think they were. In that case I've not seen silk... I'll have to investigate

Mammabrown · 16/02/2016 08:58

Colour is the packet of those I'll forget the name of them and automatically pick up pink bodyform

Excited101 · 16/02/2016 08:59

The always website shows all of the different ones- I never realised there were so many! Will be looking out for silk from now on-

Guess I've been lucky, never had a problem with scented pads before.

Don't think I could be paid enough to use a mooncup though.

EBearhug · 16/02/2016 09:08

There might be that many, but that doesn't mean they'll all be stocked locally.

CrotchetQuaverMinim · 16/02/2016 09:36

and as mentioned earlier, not only are they not stocked in many places, but just because Always claim they don't have added fragrance, doesn't mean that they don't have "acti-pearls", which DO still have a very strong smell. I tried to click on the preference for 'unfragranced' to see what was available in pantyliners, and the only ones that were either were decent size and had 'acti-pearls', or were the miniature daily ones that don't really have any protection. grr.

CrotchetQuaverMinim · 16/02/2016 09:39

Always have a (very cringeworthy) twitter feed - maybe some clued up person could link to this thread (probably for the millionth time, I know loads of people have complained in the past and they ignore it). But the more they know, the better.
