To wonder what idiot invented scented sanitary pads and tampons?

Because it seems to be getting harder to buy the non-scented kind these days! But honestly, who thought it was a good idea to put something heavily perfumed so fanjo-adjacent? AIBU to think it was probably a man?

And yes, I know I should probably use a mooncup and reusable pads but I'm not quite there yet!

*useLESS individually-wrapped pantyliners!

Lottie2611 · 15/02/2016 15:34

Please someone tell me, why would someone be 'horrified' by them?
Do they cause long term problems or something that I don't know about?!

I bought them nce thinking they would be cool.

The smell lingers for ages afterwards. Like glade airfreshener

CallaLilli · 15/02/2016 15:38

I did buy some scented pads once, by accident, but couldn't be arsed going back to exchange them. I figured there was no harm in using the packet up. After one day I had such an irritation that I threw the entire packet in the bin!

Scented tampons are a thing?

I can almost get the scented pads as they don't ahem go in.

But scented tampons?

Here it's almost impossible to find tampons with an applicator.

Good job I don't need them anymore!

CallaLilli · 15/02/2016 15:39

Yep, I'm pretty sure I've seen "doe-fresh" (ie, scented) Tampax.

toottoottakeover · 15/02/2016 15:40

YANBU, the tampons are especially bad, I once used one by mistake and developed a terrible case of thrush! Stupid, stupid idea and the worst bit is they don't even smell nice!

I prefer to buy own brand san pro now as they tend not to be scented. I am even thinking of giving in and finally buying a mooncup!

CrotchetQuaverMinim · 15/02/2016 15:41

Yes, they are horrible!! Smell revolting, and so strong.

I was searching for pantyliners that weren't scented, and it was almost impossible to find in the smallish-Boots near me (maybe the bigger ones are better).

I always liked Always because I find they absorb well and stay quite dry on the surface, and come in lots of lengths/widths, but almost all of theirs now have hideous fragrances. I thought I'd found one that didn't, some kind of Daily one, but they were teeny-tiny and wouldn't absorb anything much, so basically useless for what I need (protection in case of leaks from tampon; waiting for it to start, etc). It seems to be getting worse, too - this latest box you can smell almost as soon as you open the cabinet door, and I think I can get a whiff of it just when I go into the bathroom. Heaven knows how obvious it is when wearing them. GRRRRRRRRR. I don't know what to buy now that has similar coverage/feel to those but without the smell. I tried some Carefree (I think?) ones last month, but they didn't absorb as well and were smaller, and still had some amount of fragrance.

I haven't noticed the problem with tampons yet, so am still using Tampax, the ordinary ones with cardboard applicators. (But those annoy me too, because they've changed the paper packaging on them so it doesn't have the thread that helped the wrapping rip open nicely!).

Why can't they just leave things as they are!?!

imwithspud · 15/02/2016 15:41

YANBU, I bought the Always ones by accident. They smell horrific. I got thrush and I'm pretty sure the pads are a contributing factor.

Bloody ridiculous idea.

bettyberry · 15/02/2016 15:42

Naturacare do the unscented kind. Waitrose stock them and most eco healthfood places.

Its also harder to find sanpro without those absorbent gel crystals. They always give me a nasty rash and/or make me itch like mad. I was always able to get a good brand that was just good quality cotton/fibre. Usually own brand versions.

ouryve · 15/02/2016 15:42

I was wondering if anyone ever did buy them, not by accident. Seems this thread has one person who actually does.

Lottie - I hate the smell and they make my nethers sting and itch.

I spent several days bottoming out a room, once because there was a weird smell in there. Had no luck at all. I then threw out the packet of scented pantyliners (bought by mistake) that I was never going to use any more of and the smell magically vanished. Rather than a "fresh" smell, it was like something had died and gone off.

yorkshapudding · 15/02/2016 15:43

I accidentally bought two big packs of pads as they were on offer, didn't realise they were scented until I opened the packet. Within an hour of wearing one I was itching like mad. The annoying thing is I've bought this brand before and they never used to be scented! It's getting really difficult to find non scented ones now, which suggests that there must be a demand for them but I can't understand why anyone would want their fanjo to reek like a Glade plug-in Confused

chillycurtains · 15/02/2016 15:43

Yep. I am also going to move to washable pads. I have had enough of thrush after every single period. Literally every single month.

MetalMidget · 15/02/2016 15:43

I think it's just a ruse so that they can reintroduce non-fragranced ones as a more expensive 'natural' option, like Simple cosmetics, etc.

Lottie2611 · 15/02/2016 15:44

Doubt I'm the only person that buys them.
To be honest, apart from a slight perfume I find them exactly the same as the others Hmm

Steben · 15/02/2016 15:45

They are utterly disgusting and make me retch. I don't understand it. I can only use pads and now use always infinity, which are pretty much the brands only non scented pad, so many people must have complained why does anyone want odour neutralising pearls in their knickers Angry

Goingtobeawesome · 15/02/2016 15:45

I'm sick of having to smell packs too see what are fragrance free. I suggested a while ago MNHQ should get the bosses on but I expect they will say what M&S say when you complain we know what our customers want.

Arrogant, wrong and bloody frustrating.

OurBlanche · 15/02/2016 15:46

I now have a fear of having to use them again.

I can't imagine who thought that up. Blech

magicstar1 · 15/02/2016 15:48

It's not just the stink that turns me off them...I only have to waft one near my flaps and they swell and get itchy - hurts for days afterwards

WorkPlayClean · 15/02/2016 15:49

I accidentally bought some the other day and even DH could smell them (I was fully clothed and he was nowhere near my lady parts just for info) - it's ridiculous. I never smell of anything, bad or good, normally in periods (I know DH would tactfully say), now I stink like some knock off Febreeze!

NeedsAsockamnesty · 15/02/2016 15:49

They are horrible I used them for a day and was very unwell.

Felt like chemical burns under my knickers. I now use reusables

bettyberry · 15/02/2016 15:50

chilly I finally stopped the itch here with washables. They are great. I love these ones and I'm about to get a couple more.

lottie I have yet to come across any sanpro that lists the ingredients it uses especially those scented ones. I wouldn't want to use something that doesn't list its ingredients. www.goreal.org.uk/what-s-the-issue-with-sanpro

jay55 · 15/02/2016 15:52

Even the unscented sort end up scented sat next to the smelly ones on the shelf.

MrsH1989 · 15/02/2016 15:52

I am actually looking to go the mooncup route since the new scented liners have taken over the world. Even the so called non-scented ones smell gross!
