To wonder what idiot invented scented sanitary pads and tampons?

Because it seems to be getting harder to buy the non-scented kind these days! But honestly, who thought it was a good idea to put something heavily perfumed so fanjo-adjacent? AIBU to think it was probably a man?

And yes, I know I should probably use a mooncup and reusable pads but I'm not quite there yet!

The women of GB must rise up and declare that we do not want Glade-smelling itchy lalas.

PenguinVox · 15/02/2016 17:38

I also wondered who on earth buys them. I've bought them by mistake and thought they were horrible. But then I had a whole decade of unscented towels and tampons before mistakenly buying the scented ones. I guess the new generations of girls/women starting their periods might buy them and think they are normal because they don't know any different. And so they might catch on that way.

woollytights · 15/02/2016 17:39

I think they're fine, but I also don't work myself up absolutely livid over marks and spencer/dairy milk recipe either.

I disagree about scented towels being a feminist issue to be honest. Lots of things are scented unnecessarily. Shampoo, anti perspirants, soap, toothpaste, body lotion... It seems to apply to all hygiene products. Does anyone have any views on this as I'm interested to know if I've missed the point.

With regards to skin sensitivity etc, I trust women who suffer that issue would instead buy a suitable alternative product such as the few mentioned in this thread

PenguinVox · 15/02/2016 17:40

Well I suppose I should say "they might have caught on that way" rather than "they might catch on that way" since they already seem to be popular, judging by the way it's so difficult to find unscented pads and tampons.

ToastDemon · 15/02/2016 17:46

woollytights scented shampoo isn't going to give you thrush.
Neither is body lotion unless you rub it into your fanny.
Nor are any of the other things you mentioned.
So I think having no option but to buy a product that is damaging to genitalia is pretty much the definition of a feminist issue.

ToastDemon · 15/02/2016 17:48

I think it's part of this wider trend where heaven forbid if women aren't some sort of weird plastic doll with no body hair and no smells. Plastic faces from 17 different types of primer and contouring. Fake nails. Fake eyelashes. Fake hair. Fabreeze fannies.

onemouseplace · 15/02/2016 17:56

I hate these so much - and as others have said, even the ones that aren't marked as scented (or 'fresh') stink to high heaven - Always I'm looking at you.

Just why, oh why!

Yseulte · 15/02/2016 17:57

Have they caught on or have manufacturers simply decided to make them. I don't know any woman who wants scented pads. All of my friends, sister, mum complain about them.

Error404UserNotFound · 15/02/2016 17:59

Lillets tampons come with an applicator, aren't scented, are more absorbant than Tampax and are cheaper too. Discovered them a couple of months ago. £3.50 in my local chemist for a standard box of Tampax, £2 for the same size box of Lillets.

Always Infinity are shite. They feel really odd, like a memory foam mattress and they have this horrid smell like a carpet remnant warehouse. Vile.

Yseulte · 15/02/2016 17:59

I wouldn't assume that manufacturers following demand, they're just creating it by making it hard to get unscented.

Error404UserNotFound · 15/02/2016 18:00

Can MN not do a campaign against it? Not only are they overpriced (nearly five fucking quid for a pack of Infinity!), they're causing health issues like thrush, BV and so on.

FairyDustDreamer · 15/02/2016 18:12

Own brand Tesco here for tampons and pads. Cheaper you go the less risk of scent I find.
I have to have applicators on tampons [not thread I know]. Can't be doing with washing blood from up my fingernail after trip to loo.
When went visiting inlaws 'abroad' took an age to find applicator ones.
Sorry- going off the point!

Goingtobeawesome · 15/02/2016 18:27

Thank you needs.

TooOldForGlitter · 15/02/2016 18:31

Man hating Lottie? No, I don't think so.

Etak15 · 15/02/2016 18:36

I got them as a substitute with my Asda delivery - I didn't want to embarrass the poor bloke by telling him I wasn't happy with my substitute! Maybe I could use them as scented drawer linersGrin

ErrolTheHamster · 15/02/2016 19:01

Fucking. Hate. Them.

You can find your way to the sanpro aisle in any supermarket by following the sickly artificial scent, the dirty rotten fanny-itching bastard things that they are.

Got a raging itch from Always ones months ago and switched brands immediately when I clicked why, but it's wasn't easy to find my preferred spec of towel without half the fucking Magic Tree factory infused within.

StuffandBother · 15/02/2016 19:17

I've just been snorting the femo aisle in Aldi like a massive coke addict! like someone said upthread the non scented even smell after they've been sat next to the stinky ones!!

And for those who use them, I was sat next to a colleague in a meeting on Friday and got the unmistakable 'Always' whiff, luckily we're friends and she wasn't phased when I enquired politely if she had one of those air freshener sanitary towels in situ .. oh how we chortled she's blocked me on facebook now and put in a grievance, touchy cow!!

Louise43210 · 15/02/2016 19:24

I'm allergic to perfume so it is very annoying.

I've never met anyone who likes scented sanpro. I get itching and trush from them and I'm not even very sensitive skinned. I use Lillets and Always Silk, or whatever else cheaper I can find.

Passthecake30 · 15/02/2016 19:37

maybe I could use them as scented drawer liners

pmsl!! GrinGrin

Babyroobs · 15/02/2016 19:37

They are horrible. i bought them by accident and they made me itch horribly. And they smell disgusting.

TheToys · 15/02/2016 19:43

Anyway, I prefer an extra spray of perfume if I feel like having a stronger scent (not that I use perfume to disguise anything) , rather than have the febrezetastic stink of sanpro wafting around me.

elizadolittlechoc · 15/02/2016 19:52

So I'm not the only woman who stands in supermarkets sniffing sanpro boxes in supermarkets, trying not to gag!

Lizsmum · 15/02/2016 20:02

Could anyone recommend a brand/size of sanitary towel for my DGD? She hasn't started her periods yet but I want to keep some in the house for when she does. I haven't had period for a loooong time (MIrena and now I'm too old) so feel a bit out of touch.
