To wonder what idiot invented scented sanitary pads and tampons?

Because it seems to be getting harder to buy the non-scented kind these days! But honestly, who thought it was a good idea to put something heavily perfumed so fanjo-adjacent? AIBU to think it was probably a man?

And yes, I know I should probably use a mooncup and reusable pads but I'm not quite there yet!

I feel a bit of a perv when I surreptitiously sniff at the packs in the supermarket. But I don't want to be a walking advert for sanpro- oh look we can smell that woman's wearing a pad. And I've accidentally bought them & have been driven mad by the itch.

Lottie2611 · 15/02/2016 15:52

I must have a super nunny that's not sensitive Grin

Goingtobeawesome · 15/02/2016 15:53

Could perfumed pads make your fanjo stink of fish, burn and itch? For months?

ThursdayLastWeek · 15/02/2016 15:53

the implication of scented liners and pads lottie is that a woman's natural smell is so bad it must be covered up.

When it isn't.

ThursdayLastWeek · 15/02/2016 15:54

My mum bought them for me after I had DS.
Scented liners + lochia is a truly truly horrendous combination.

SakuraSakura · 15/02/2016 15:55

YANBU! Bought them accidentally too, they are awful.

Hygge · 15/02/2016 15:55

I try to avoid the scented ones as much as possible, sometimes get them by mistake or if DH buys them for me and doesn't realise.

I only ever use pads, and I hate the scented ones.

I don't by Always anymore because of the smell.

Smartieskid · 15/02/2016 15:55

I use cotton organic ones no smell and slightly yellow cream pad where there's no bleach added x

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 15/02/2016 15:56

Telco own brand pads seem to be u scented - the nighttime winged ones definitely are.

MrsJorahMormont · 15/02/2016 15:56

They are absolutely revolting. My friend gave me one when I got caught short at her house and by the time I got home it stank of perfume and blood. The smell makes me mentally heave just remembering it. YANBU. Only a mass boycott is going to get rid of them.

And I imagine they were peddled invented by either a man or a perky American woman who bleaches her asshole and steams her fanjo.

FranHastings · 15/02/2016 15:57

They are utterly vile. I've stopped using Always too and have gone for cheapy own brand MASSIVE pads, which seem to be about the only thing that haven't been cursed by perfume. I feel like I'm wearing a nappy.

CallaLilli · 15/02/2016 16:01

Actually come to think of it, I ran out of my usual Superdrug brand pads last week so nipped out and bought some Always. They didn't smell like they were scented but I've had a super itchy fanjo since that's only just started to feel better. I don't know what was in those pads but I don't think I'll be using them again!

MyVisionsComeFromSoup · 15/02/2016 16:01

Bodyform in pink packets are unscented - think that's normal with wings.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 15/02/2016 16:01

I'm really not getting this. I've used scented pads for years and they've not bothered me. Why the hell would you rather smell of fishy bloody? A woman's 'scent' is not unpleasant? I don't like it, actually, and yes I am a woman.

Now I cannot be doing with tampons. They really are vile. Can't see the point in them being scented, you wouldn't be able to smell it once it's up there, surely?

hefzi · 15/02/2016 16:03

I remember being involved in a very loud conversation about this in a Cafe Nero, in 2002, when a friend was relating the contents of her gender seminar from that morning (yes, the year is graven on my memory!) - I had no idea such a thing even existed before that. Apparently, their lecturer laid the blame firmly at the door of the patriarchy: even without her input, I think it's fair to assume it was a man who came up with the idea! Alternatively, the kind of woman MrsJorah mentions ^^ Grin

I appreciate some people must buy them from choice, as there's so many scented options now available. But surely there are a hardcore of women still who don't like scenting their nether regions with air-freshener? And a substantial amount who have reactions to all the additives? I have never been more grateful for Cerazette - I appreciate that it may add to my crazy, but no periods for five years means I can avoid the aisle in the supermarket that's even more scented than the one with all the home fragrance options. Manufacturers: it's rank - bloody well stop it!

colouringinagain · 15/02/2016 16:05

Agree, they're completely disgusting.Confused

So stink free ones:
Bodywork (pink packaging)
Natracare
Always infinity
Tesco own brand (winged nighttime)

Any more people would recommend?

Let's vote with our £££!

Passthecake30 · 15/02/2016 16:07

Can't stand them....I feel that everyone can smell the fact that I'm on my period??!

Passthecake30 · 15/02/2016 16:07

Tesco value ultra ones, not winged but good enough for normal days

SirVixofVixHall · 15/02/2016 16:08

DH once bought me a pack, we were on holiday and my period came unexpectedly, the scented ones were the only ones in the shop. I could smell them from across the room, before I even opened the packet!!! He came in the shopping, and I said "What's that weird perfume-y smell?" Ugggh. I didn't use them, he had to drive to a big supermarket and find something else, as I know they would have made me itch like mad. They were unbelievably strongly fragranced, what loony would want that next to their vulva? I use a mix of the most basic type of Bodyform ( annoyingly they have suddenly discontinued the best pads they did, and brought in loads of scented ones) Natracare, and washables.

SirVixofVixHall · 15/02/2016 16:08

Er... came in WITH the shopping, not came in the shopping. Snort.

zeetea · 15/02/2016 16:11

I thought it was just me, the scented ones turn my tum - ladies I get mine all from Poundland now! They sell the well known brands, just the boring non-scented packs - which suits me just fine!

NeedsAsockamnesty · 15/02/2016 16:18

awesome that sounds like a bout of bacterial vaginosis, and yes perfume in your pads can cause that

ClarenceTheLion · 15/02/2016 16:18

DP bought me some scented ones. I'm using a scented tampon right now (what's the point? As soon as you insert it you can't smell it anymore!) and hoping that it doesn't cause any kind of nasty itchy reaction before I can buy my usual. I feel like I'm going to be forced into getting a mooncup, all the major sanitary brands seem to be going for scented.

It's just part of the general trend towards women becoming dead eyed, rictus grinning, odourless sex dolls. The international media in genera won't be happy until we are all Kardashians (whose fannies smell like summer meadows, because Khloe sniffed Kim and Kourtney's knickers and said so...)

Spudlet · 15/02/2016 16:20

They make my hooha itch just thinking about it. Hells bells, I have to be careful using soap down there, never mind smelly pads!

Not looking forward to getting periods again Sad

hollinhurst84 · 15/02/2016 16:21

Lillets pads are unscented
Always silk ones are unscented
