WIBU to quit my job?

Snowey101 · 09/02/2016 20:43

I have been in my new job for 3 weeks....and frankly, I'm wondering if I've made a terrible mistake.

In a nutshell and not going into too much detail- major unhappy work force, low morale & a rigid, tense working environment.

The person that I am taking over from (who is meant to be training me in their role) has seemed to have taken an instant dislike to me as from day 1 she's been snapping and snarling at me, doesn't give clear instructions therefore sometimes I don't 100% understand what I'm expected to do but am too afraid to ask her to clarify or ask her a Q as she just bites me head off.

Today she ignored me all day, pointedly, whilst cackling with some of my other colleagues. I felt so desperately unhappy today that I felt like crying.

The trouble is, I'm worried even if I did quit that I'd struggle to get another job as leaving a job after a few weeks or couple of months really doesn't look good does it and I'm not sure what on earth id say to a potential employer?

Feeling really down tonight. Just really not sure what to do.

Explaining why you left so soon is tough but unless you have a history of job hopping, you will get over it. In three years time you can just ditch that record in your CV entirely. Just a two months break, no one will think much of it.

When I was let go, I then found a job with this ex-company direct competitor, who were happy to have me, and had great atmosphere / morale. Three years later I found a high profile job (or rather the job found me) that I wouldn't even dream of three years ago.

Choughed · 23/02/2016 20:55

Is there anyone else you can confide in while your boss is away? Another boss or HR?

I'm also fascinated about what your job is that you are left with no work all.

10 days is a long time to wait. If be half tempted to take holiday or sick leave...

DaggerEyes · 24/02/2016 05:57

Hey! That's great! You KNOW what your job is now. Why don't you try a new tactic of shadowing the bitch. Look over her shoulder every time you have no work. If she questions you, say as you are taking over from her you are going to watch her work if she won't train you or give you work. Be her shadow!!! Xxx.

DaggerEyes · 24/02/2016 06:25

Thinking about it, she'll probably give you work just to get you to stop shadowing her! Especially if you question every mouse click, file opened, keystrokes etc.

SpringTown46 · 24/02/2016 10:41

Think about confirming the points raised with your boss in an email (paper trail!)

HortonWho · 24/02/2016 10:48

I would be blatantly bringing in a book to read at my desk and loudly commenting how you still haven't been given any work today and you're meant to be doing it all by April. And every half an hour announce that if anyone needs any help, you are just sat there being paid to do nothing and are happy to help out with anything.

Everyone will see you doing nothing because she has not been giving you work. And people will get pissed off that they have to work while you don't and sharing their workload.

DaggerEyes · 24/02/2016 11:51

I kind of feel like op needs to decide if she really wants to stay in a job where even her boss seems to not give a single little shit about workplace bullying until it affects him...ie, nobody to replace bitch. If you don't want this blip on your cv, you need to walk asap or bring out the big guns if you plan to stay. I don't think meekly waiting will help, sorry op.

Snowey101 · 25/02/2016 07:08

Today is another day I'm dreading.

Yesterday, just before I left, one of the other directors was in. It's all a bit complicated but basically, anytime after 3.30 I'm paid overtime. Obviously I hardly ever have anything to do but because they've put my hours down as 8-4 I've been sitting there until 4. Anyway, yesterday I didn't have much time but the other director was sitting at his desk (a rarity) and I basically asked him if I could finish at 3.30 from now on unless I was busy as they're paying me overtime after 3.30 which is pointless if I'm not doing anything. He semeed very perplexed and said he'll discuss it with the other director (the boss I have been going to) but I should have enough work to keep me busy so he can't understand it. There then wasn't time for me to say anything else Sad

But I think I've planted the seed of doubt in his mind and if he did speak to the other director last night then hopefully he'd have said 'well she did come to me actually and she's bored at work, B isn't giving her enough work etc etc.

There is a job I really need to apply for by noon tomorrow and I'm out tonight, j could really do with finishing at 3.30 today to get home and complete it before I go out!

Oh shit!! Sad

Choughed · 25/02/2016 09:11

Oh OP, I was just coming on to say that this is a really dangerous time for you, as you are beginning to make waves against Bitchface.

Forget the cunts, put it all behind you. They are cunts and it is THEIR LOSS. Onwards and upwards.

Yseulte · 25/02/2016 09:22

I'm sorry I knew this was going to happen, I feel terrible I should have warned you.

This is what happens when workplaces are so badly managed, it's so much easier to blame you than change anything. That's why I thought you should resign asap - to go before you were pushed.

On plus side I think it's the best thing for you.

Coldwatebay · 25/02/2016 09:22

So sorry that you've been through such a vile time. X

BillSykesDog · 25/02/2016 09:24

It's no loss to you. It sounds like a dreadful place to work, you're well out of it.

What did they say?

RumbleMum · 25/02/2016 09:36

Oh OP, I'm so sorry you've had such a terrible time. What happened? I hope you can get some temp work to tide you over until you get a job that deserves you.

RumbleMum · 25/02/2016 09:37

And yes, exactly what Choughed said. Their loss, the bunch of total losers.

It sounds like an absolutely hopeless firm, and you're well out of it. I'd be tempted to put in a formal complaint anyway for the hell of it.

And look on the bright side, you're now free to apply for the job you've got your eye on.

Snowey101 · 25/02/2016 13:57

I'll copy and paste the message I have just sent to some friends, minus names. You all know about the meeting with my boss Tues afternoon and what I said to the other director yesterday before I left work.

I got In and had a couple of piddly bits to do then director I spoke to yesterday came over, in front of Bitch and said 'Have you got enough to keep you busy?' I said 'well I'll need something else after I've done this.' He then said to Bitch in front of everyone 'Bitch, Snowey came to me yesterday and told me she didn't have enough work, I've said there's more than enough work to keep her busy.' Bitch then went into the stock cupboard in a mood and Director followed her, they shut the door and Bitch2 (who I get on with now And has been my ally the past couple of weeks) and I just looked at each other and she said 'don't worry, you had to say something.' At which point they both came back in. Then director said to me 'Snowey can I have a word with you in the other room, and Bitch too' so off we both went and when I got in there Director said 'you're not happy are you Snowey?' And I said 'no, I'm not, I don't know what's going on, I'm sick of not knowing what I'm doing or having any work to do or when I do have work, don't get any proper guidance or training for it.' Bitch then piped up that she doesnt have time to train me, they really needed an experienced XXXXXX (my role), said they need someone really numerical, basically an accountant. (The job has got NOTHING to do with accountancy, but yes there are numbers involved however I've worked with numbers for years in my previous roles and been fine) I said to them that I stated to my boss (the one I've been going to for meetings) at the start I wasn't an accountant and whilst I was okay with numbers, it wasn't my strongest point. I said I've never been given any proper training (there isn't time they kept saying) no ones really shown me anything, they didn't really have answers. Basically, Bitch told the director in the stock cupboard that she didn't like me or that I wasn't up to it, or whatever, Which is EXACTLY what she did with the other 2 girls that Bitch2 told me about and exactly what Bitch2 said might happen if I stir up a fuss by going to my boss the other day etc but what was I meant to do?! Just not say anything?!

Coldwatebay · 25/02/2016 14:22

What a week bunch of directors. Nothing is going to change there. You are very much better out of their circus.

HazelBite · 25/02/2016 15:35

Op its horrible to be sacked (been there) but the relief you will feel when you wake up tomorrow will be incredible.

I think a bit further down the line when you are feeling calmer I would write to the directors saying that you are sorry that they did not feel that you were suitable for the role etc etc, but they interviewed you and took you on and had you had sufficient training from someone with a positive and helpful attitude towards you, that you are confident that you would have been able etc etc

Hope you will find a new and far better job soon Flowers

ReasonablyIntelligent · 25/02/2016 15:57

Onwards and upwards OP, this time next year you'll think nothing of it.
You deserve better Flowers

Annecyinyourpantsy · 25/02/2016 16:19

Op think of it as a blessing in disguise. You said there was agency work around, get some asap. Have tonight to link your wounds then get on phone tomorrow and start moving on with your life. Pathetic management not dealing with bull's.

Annecyinyourpantsy · 25/02/2016 16:19

*bullys

HortonWho · 25/02/2016 16:27

So they've been through 3 new people and still don't wish to acknowledge the common link - idiots. I wouldn't say you were sacked as both parties really came to a mutual understanding that it was best you left the position. I'd explain in future interviews it was a temporary cover which was meant to turn into a permanent opportunity, but weeks in, it became apparent to all that they didn't define the role properly within their organisation and essentially had two persons to do one workload. theyre now re evaluating their structure are are looking for an accountant with X background.
