to just give my DC pancakes with sugar & lemon juice for tea?

In my defence - they are having a couscous salad for pack lunch at school today with loads of veggies and roast chicken mixed in with it so they will have had one proper meal already.

I had planned to make savoury pancakes with a chicken alfredo filling and then just some sweet ones for after, but I had forgotten that DS has swimming today and I have to go out and pick him up at 5.30pm which is a PITA and means that dinner ends up being rushed rather than leisurely.

They will complain if I make them eat savoury pancakes - not because they are fussy eaters, but because they LOVE sugar & lemon juice crepes and don't get them very often so it's a real treat.

Please tell me IANBU to effectively feed my children dessert for dinner one night of the year.

I'm truly amazed. It wouldn't have occurred to me not to give then dinner first!!! I don't think my brain registers this is even "allowed".

Even a token beans on toast or frozen pizza.... Maybe I'm more rule driven than I. Think.

Hmmmmmm pizza
......

TeaT1me · 09/02/2016 14:49

D'oh. Meant hmmmmmm pancakes!!!! I can't wait. I remember as a student having parties with lots of toppings!

Bloodybridget · 09/02/2016 15:04

We had Nigella's American pancakes for breakfast with (thawed frozen) raspberries, bananas and maple syrup. I wouldn't mind having more tonight but cba to make them.

Scholes34 · 09/02/2016 15:06

American pancakes are for breakfast only. A thin pancake is what's to be had on Shrove Tuesday.

frikadela01 · 09/02/2016 15:13

Surely everyone just eats pancakes till they feel sick from them. Can't imagine anything else on pancake day.

Used to all sit at the kitchen table while my mum made pancakes for what felt like hours. Everyone took it in turns to have the next one. Always either golden syrup or lemon and sugar. And it's got to be jiffy lemon, non of this fresh lemon nonsense. We're a classy family in that way!

liletsthepink · 09/02/2016 15:19

I love Mumsnet. I'm off to melt down some toffees now that a pp has mentioned melting a curly wurly - what a brilliant idea!

Op YANBU.

Purpledahlia88 · 09/02/2016 15:21

I am doing this tonight but using ready made choc chip pancakes.. so I am even worse in the mothering stakes!

trulybadlydeeply · 09/02/2016 15:24

STOP THE THREAD

Findus Crispy Pancakes won't exist after March? How can this be? Sad. The cheese ones are my ultimate guilty "when no-one else is around" treat.

Andfaraway · 09/02/2016 15:26

I'd never heard 'Pancake Day' before

Well no, because it's Shrove Tuesday or Mardi Gras.

You need to start a campaign. They tried to get rid of salad cream, but didn't get away with it.

Goldenhandshake · 09/02/2016 15:30

Isn't this the law on pancake day Hmm

Allalonenow · 09/02/2016 15:30

YABU serving them with just sugar and lemon!

You should spread with Nutella and add a dollop of cream,
or an old fashioned favourite of Golden Syrup .

nocabbageinmyeye · 09/02/2016 15:31

dayslikethis & TakeMeUpTheNorthMountain melted curly wurlys are divine!!! They should melt themselves in a pancake straight off the pan, serve with ice-cream - delicious!!! Creme eggs, mars and fudge are also divine, just wear elastic pants Wink

Natsku · 09/02/2016 15:34

Fuck, I forgot its pancake day. I was going to do fish nuggets and hash browns for dinner (so how very healthy...in the deep fat fryer too!) but now I want to do pancakes instead!

nocabbageinmyeye · 09/02/2016 15:35

liletsthepink you will not be disappointed - your welcome Grin Wink

BarbaraofSeville · 09/02/2016 15:36

RE: Findus Crispy Pancakes

I have googled and according to this, it is only the Findus name that will disappear.

It will be 'swapped by a like-for-like item under the new Original Pancake Co brand' so crispy pancakes are to remain Grin.

I only eat them about once every five years, but it is heartening to learn that they will still be there if I want them .

foragogogo · 09/02/2016 15:39

oooooh i have a curly wirly in the fridge - it's karma!

trulybadlydeeply · 09/02/2016 15:39

Phew Grin

OhYouLuckyDuck · 09/02/2016 15:41

Home made pancakes? YANBU. I, on the other hand, have bought ready made buttermilk and blueberry pancakes and some dutch mini dipping pancakes and my DCs are having those for dinner.

OhYouLuckyDuck · 09/02/2016 15:43

Scholes34 that was a marketing ploy, Heinz started the rumour after sales had dropped a little and they then had record sales.

TotalConfucius · 09/02/2016 15:44

We have:
Sugar, lemon juice, choc spread, peanut butter, blueberry conserve, maple syrup, runny honey, raspberry jam, clotted cream, squirty cream and chocolate sauce.
And there's 2 bananas and some raspberries.
Shrove Tuesday is even better when you have teenagers to do the actual pancakes! I doubt they would be so keen to take over the kitchen if it was all kale coulis and squirty sprout sauce.

Archer26 · 09/02/2016 15:46

Tis the law!

bakeoffcake · 09/02/2016 15:46

I always gave mine a "proper" dinner first! I'm really annoyed I wasted all that time.

It's too late now, they've left home!

Dh doesn't like pancakes so I'll be making them just for me.
