to just give my DC pancakes with sugar & lemon juice for tea?

In my defence - they are having a couscous salad for pack lunch at school today with loads of veggies and roast chicken mixed in with it so they will have had one proper meal already.

I had planned to make savoury pancakes with a chicken alfredo filling and then just some sweet ones for after, but I had forgotten that DS has swimming today and I have to go out and pick him up at 5.30pm which is a PITA and means that dinner ends up being rushed rather than leisurely.

They will complain if I make them eat savoury pancakes - not because they are fussy eaters, but because they LOVE sugar & lemon juice crepes and don't get them very often so it's a real treat.

Please tell me IANBU to effectively feed my children dessert for dinner one night of the year.

That's a weekly event in our house, not having them today though Confused Enjoy.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 09/02/2016 13:32

YABU
At least some of the pancakes should have Nutella in them Wink

I am planning to do the same tonight.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/02/2016 13:32

pancakes for breakfast here. I don't think my family quite appreciate the skill it takes to cook pancakes 5 minutes after waking up.

think I might switch to evening next year. sounds less stressful.

foragogogo · 09/02/2016 13:33

Do parmesan crêpes, they're yummy.

theycallmemellojello · 09/02/2016 13:33

Can't believe all the yeses here. Of course that's not enough for tea! Especially if they've only had a couscous salad for lunch. They need something as well as pancakes, they'll wake up hungry in the night :(

duckyneedsaclean · 09/02/2016 13:34

Butter & granulated sugar, folded into a triangle.

You'll thank me later.

dayslikethis · 09/02/2016 13:35

I am loving you all for assuaging my guilt, but am genuinely surprised at the complete agreement from all that IANBU. Where are all the health-food vipers who keel over at the idea of a homemade granola bar in a lunch box? Surely they wouldn't be happy at pancakes for dinner?!?!?!

ah - cross posted with mellojello - there you are!

(you perhaps missed one of my previous posts mello - with the amount of crepes my lot can put away I can assure you no-one is going to wake up hungry!)

I am German and pancakes are seen as a perfect decent lunch. I grew up with them as an alternative if my dad (he hated this kind of food) got leftovers from the freezer or the day before.

We have them regularly on Saturday lunch, with apples, raisins, blueberries.

Today DD has one just for her dinner after brownies and her choice is chocolate spread with whipped cream.

theycallmemellojello · 09/02/2016 13:40

Ooh I don't think I'm being healthy - the opposite, I'm prob just greedy as I'd def eat the same amount of pancakes after a normal supper! I'd be starving if I just had pancakes for dinner. I guess if they can eat a lot it's ok, but I kind of think pancakes are the sort of thing you get full up on then hungry later. But if you've done it before then and know they'll be ok then of course it's fine.

FuckyNell · 09/02/2016 13:40

I remember my mum standing at the cooker churning out pancake after pancake after pancake and that's exactly what I do too.

It's the law

HelloTreacle9 · 09/02/2016 13:41

We are going with crispy duck pancakes (to celebrate Chinese New Year as well) and then pancakes with lemon and sugar until we all burst. The quinoa and kale* can go back on the menu tomorrow ;-)

dayslikethis · 09/02/2016 13:42

all is forgiven them mello Wink

nocabbageinmyeye

MELTED CURLY WURLYS????????????

My god.

theycallmemellojello · 09/02/2016 13:44

I guess I mean surely you wouldn't have batter containing more than two eggs per person? That's basically the equivalent of an egg sandwich, and wouldn't be enough for me on a normal day, and def wouldn't be after a salad type lunch, swimming and no snacks! But at the same time it would be hard to eat more than that since they're so filling because fried in butter.... I'd offer soup at bedtime too myself...

twinkletoedelephant · 09/02/2016 13:44

Did has invited all the neighbours children

Well obviously when I say pancakes with Nutella I mean

Chia, flaxseed and wheatgrass pancakes made with homemade almond milk, madagascan vanilla and himalayan pink salt cooked in virgin coconut oil topped with an organic cashew butter and raw cacao mixture.

Wink
chibsortig · 09/02/2016 13:48

We've got strawberries, oranges, jif lemon, squirty cream, ice cream, golden syrup, sugar and chocolate spread.
No savoury ones here, just enough sugar to last a year.
Its the whole purpose of pancake day to eat as much chocolate and sugar to last until easter sunday when you can gorge on chocolate again because its the law!

JoandMax · 09/02/2016 13:49

Love pancake day!

We're not in UK so DC have had their tea already - sausages and cheese rolled up in pancakes followed by sugar/chocolate/syrup pancakes. They loved them and ate masses, absolutely no need for me to worry if they're full, I'm surprised they can move!!

BeautifulLiar · 09/02/2016 13:50

Oh I would feel weird not having a proper tea! So we're having pie, mash and veg, then pancakes with all the crap, then I'll probably get started on the chocolates 36 weeks pregnant is my excuse

dayslikethis · 09/02/2016 13:50

I feel bad that we have no nutella in the house! I will however use the cream I had planned for alfredo and the strawberries I had bought for tomorrow's pack lunch.

TheSpottedZebra · 09/02/2016 13:51

Well, we're not barbarians, so we ensure we have at least 2 courses on pancake day.

So for mains - pancakes with honey and lemon, lemon and sugar etc. But the orange juice idea has really appealed.
Then for pudding, pancakes with ice cream. And possibly some fruit and chocolate.

PregnantAndEngaged · 09/02/2016 13:54

Pretty sure this is what I used to have for dinner on pancake day!
