This is doing the rounds on fb at the moment.

Seriously Hmm

OP posts:
NeedACleverNN · 05/02/2016 09:53

Goodness I knew it wasn't a real baby but I can't get over how alien like the foetus is...

OP posts:
Highsteaks · 05/02/2016 09:55

To be fair, it doesn't say anywhere on the original picture that it is a real baby, just that 'this is what we all looked like at 12 weeks'.

But yes

What exactly is going on in America with regards to abortion? I saw Stacey Dash (I know, who?) slagging off Jennifer Lawrence for saying that planned parenthood is great, but I don't know much else.

I just cannot get my head around the fact that so many Americans appear to think that going back to the days of backstreet abortions would be better than the current situation! I always think of the Penny storyline in Dirty Dancing, and whenever I watch it (nownthat that storyline doesnt go straight over my head!) I always think 'gosh, I cannot believe she had to go and do that'. Is there really a possibility that abortion could be made illegal again???

JillyBoel · 05/02/2016 09:57

Definitely fake - biggest clue is the skin, which isn't a 'pinky' colour until much further along. Even if it wasn't - the right to abortion is about the woman, not about whether the foetus superficially looks like a baby at any particular stage, surely?
My personal feelings are that, if you're going to base a time limit on viability, 24 weeks is sensible given current medical technology (this is based on experiences over the months that we spent in NICU with DD, who was born at 25 weeks. She was approximately the colour of an aubergine at birth, if anyone's interested).

KP86 · 05/02/2016 09:58

Bore, your link came up with the snopes page but I also kept getting a dodgy pop up ad for a 'free' iPhone.

Highsteaks · 05/02/2016 10:00

Oh x post - I see that is not even what we all look like at 12 weeks!

BadgersBum · 05/02/2016 10:01

I've already had this pop up on my feed, I pointed out that, when I miscarried at 11 weeks and 5 days, the fetus I briefly held in the palm of my hand looked nothing like this, and looked more like a baby mouse.

I then told them to F off back to their black and white, right and wrong little life.

TooOldForGlitter · 05/02/2016 10:01

The planned parenthood website gives a lot of information about what is going on across the pond. As does NARAL Pro Choice America on Facebook.

StealthPolarBear · 05/02/2016 10:01

Abortion isn't pleasant. I wouldn't like to see the fetus I was aborting or imagine it as a baby. No one pretends it's easy. But it is a valid choice for a woman to, as a pp described it, control what is happening in her own womb. A fetus may look cute or not as the case may be. More fool people who think cuteness should feature in this debate.

StealthPolarBear · 05/02/2016 10:02

And my thoughts with the people on this thread who have personal experience of this, either miscarriage or termination.

BoreOfWhabylon · 05/02/2016 10:04

Gosh KP, I'm not getting that!

Quietlifenotonyournelly · 05/02/2016 10:06

I feel sick seeing that picture, what a horrid thing to do the fb rounds. Angry

WutheringFrights · 05/02/2016 10:21

If that popped up on my fb feed that 'friend' would be deleted.
I had two mc's one of them at 12 weeks. Seeing your beautiful, longed for, baby about the size of your thumb is fucking harrowing enough without having something like this wafted about as 'scare tactic' - it's sick.
However people feel about abortion it is the choice of the individual, it is done for a whole host of reasons that are no-one else's damn business.
I have a friend who had a termination after her 20 week scan as the baby would not have survived, I can't imagine how she would feel if she saw this.
Just sick.

lorelei9 · 05/02/2016 10:34

America has had major issues going for some time. Isn't there like one place left in Texas to get an abortion? It's terrifying.

lorelei9 · 05/02/2016 10:36

Oh actually not sure....
www.theguardian.com/us-news/2015/jun/29/supreme-court-texas-abortion-clinics

KP86 · 05/02/2016 10:45

Bore, it was from my iPhone (so no anti-virus), not sure if that makes a difference? I closed down Safari and then opened from the link a few posts up from yours without worry.

OvariesBeforeBrovaries · 05/02/2016 10:49

It's disgusting and so insensitive, if anyone on my friends list shares that they'll be deleted immediately. Can't understand the breathtaking arrogance of anyone who really thinks they have the right to tell another person what to do with their body (and anything residing therein).

The situation in the US is out of control. I had a debate with someone on a pro-choice page the other day, who insisted that the process is this, that and the other (all the usual unfounded republican nonsense) and anyone who has an abortion is a murderer and should be jailed, and sending me links to pro-life websites with videos that would "enlighten me" and "make me see the error of my ways".

Um, no thanks. I will always support the right of any woman to access an abortion at any time, for any reason, as early as possible and as late as necessary.

TooOldForGlitter · 05/02/2016 11:00

Same here Ovaries. I've had to step away from fb a bit because I can't not comment but my name is 'known' now and the abuse I get is becoming tiresome. That's understated!

Branleuse · 05/02/2016 11:01

im sure most people who have chosen abortions are well aware of what foetuses are.
I dont think anti-choicers give a fuck about offending people because they feel its a moral crusade, but it takes more than an innacurate pic of a doll to stir my cold heart, nor does it make me feel particularly weird about my abortion.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 05/02/2016 11:08

that's really upset me.
I have had an abortion myself, and yet- I am very uncomfortable with it.

and I do wish people could express a concern around abortion without getting shot down as a woman hater /misognynist

Samcro · 05/02/2016 11:09

don't get this
so you see a pic that shocks you.....so you share it on here

notquitehuman · 05/02/2016 11:17

I blocked my idiot cousin for always posting shit like this. I think it was this exact picture where you had to comment 'amen' if you luff your babbbies and wud neva get an aborshun.

Plus she was always posting elf on the shelf so had to go.

bakeoffcake · 05/02/2016 11:28

FFS!

OP I've reported this thread and asked MN to change the title so people are aware there is a photo..OP why you didn't do that in the first place is beyond me!Angry

So FB don't allow pictures of BFing but allow shite like this?

seafoodeatit · 05/02/2016 11:31

It's terrible not to mention fake - anyone posting that on facebook would be getting deleted by me.

Are we still needing to make petty arguments? the argument to lower the limit completely makes a mockery of the reasons and the women behind abortions, nobody has one willy nilly and this suggestion of otherwise is abhorrent.

TitClash · 05/02/2016 11:38

I hate things like this as there seems to be a belief that people have abortions for trivial reasons.
People who know they dont want a child want easy to access very early procedures. And people who need late abortions need them.

It really is the limit from a country with such a terrible health care system. Plus the USA refuses to let children from South America travel there for abortion, so I hope they enjoy the view from that high horse.

Elendon · 05/02/2016 11:42

The picture is obviously fake. My two miscarriages at 12 weeks resulted in a few black blobs and a copious amount of bleeding/clots the size of livers.

I decided to terminate at 10 weeks rather than go through a third miscarriage.
