Honestly, I have to stop wearing my judgeypants but they're so comfortable

My friend has posted his tea on facebook. It's cottage pie.

Yum!, I hear you cry.

NO. It's mince, mash, THEN A PASTRY LID.

WHHHHHHHHHHYYYYY???

I'm all for double carbing, but really. REALLY.

It's an abomination. (Mind you, I get a little huffy when cottage and shepherds is used interchangeably for pies)

OP posts:
CakeNinja · 04/02/2016 08:18

I can't get over the OP which states a pastry lid ON TOP OF MASH Angry
Wtf?
And the thread has left me with my face like this Shock as I discover that people put pies in rolls?? and in other things I've never heard of - I mean, what the hell?

GreatFuckability · 04/02/2016 08:20

I'm welsh. Growing up it was the law in my house to eat bread and butter with everything. Everything tastes better in a butty. Even custard according to my naini b

JarethTheGoblinKing · 04/02/2016 08:24

I want a pie sandwich now

DoctorTwo · 04/02/2016 08:56

I assume you haven't seen the horror that is hot dog sausages and pieces of chicken, slow cooked with a tin of baked beans then topped with cheesy mash?

Oh my days, I'm making this for tea on Saturday.

I haven't had a pie in a balm for eons...

Theendispie · 04/02/2016 08:59

I am fond of pie as you can see by my user name.

There used to be a mnetter who ran a posh pie stall, she was an amusing poster.

I have had a pie sandwich before, it's called a Wigan kebab.

x2boys · 04/02/2016 09:27

I.like potnoodles on a butty too and fish fingers NotgrumpyGrin

GreatFuckability · 04/02/2016 09:41

BarbaraofSeville · 04/02/2016 10:04

When I worked in Greggs a bakery, there was a postman who used to buy a Cornish Pasty in a breadcake every Saturday morning.

I can't remember if he was a Lancastrian though. I was in West Yorkshire, hence calling a round individual sized lump of bread a breadcake.

The Cornish pasties were those shit ones that bore no actual resemblance to a Cornish pasty that must only contain actual lumps of meat plus vegetables, none of which are peas (bleugh).

There could be quite an interesting Aberdeen/Lancashire fusion food of a macaroni cheese pie barm and the triple carbing would make the carb fearers' heads spin Grin

Back to the OP, that seems very wrong, but potato and meat pie is also very popular and it is virtually the same ingredients, but the potato would be in small pieces, rather than mashed up. I love a good potato and meat pie, I do.

The most famous meat and potato pie locally would be the Denby Dale pie, which literally is big enough to feed the 5000 and then some.

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 04/02/2016 11:08

i have seen pasta flan

not a pasta bake it had pastry on the bottom

Janeymoo50 · 04/02/2016 11:12

Reading this has made me yearn (who says yearn these days fgs!) for a Bells Scotch pie (have tried their Macaroni cheese pies too, vile).
Scotch pies are the thing of my Scottish holidays.

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 04/02/2016 11:14

pies are very popular in Australia (national dish ??)

popular take away food is a pie (various types from thai chicken to beef and ale) that they cut a hole in the top put a scoop of mash then pour gravy over it - it is delicious but very messy to eat but beats our pie and mash

FirstWeTakeManhattan · 04/02/2016 11:22

When I moved oop North, I was enchanted to learn that in my new office, Friday was Pig Cake day.

Or bacon sandwich, for anyone not from round these parts.

x2boys · 04/02/2016 11:33

What do you call three meat pies on top of each other? A wigan wedding cake Grin

BarbaraofSeville · 04/02/2016 11:37

I can't tell if you are joking or not x2, but I give you the Pork Pie Wedding cake, as sold by a local butchers.

There are also the Pork Pie Appreciation Society with it's annual pork pie championship. We are serious about our pies in the north Grin.

helenahandbag · 04/02/2016 11:44

What about a pie on a roll. DD's boyfriend had one at the football on Saturday, that's just wrong.

My dad eats a pie on a roll. Scotch pie, ketchup, buttered roll.

Oysterbabe · 04/02/2016 11:49

My soup is really not going to cut it for lunch now.

Scholes34 · 04/02/2016 11:54

Meat and potato pie is (some) stewed beef and (mainly) potatoes with a shortcrust pastry lid, accompanied by peas and gravy made with beef stock and the potato water. Has to be eaten with Henderson's Relish in Sheffield.

And it's breadcakes all the way!

Scholes34 · 04/02/2016 11:54

And of course the meat and potato pie is double carbs.

QueenArseClangers · 04/02/2016 12:06

high fives x2boys

Was just going to put about pastie barms in Bolton.

Got a Wiganner joke for you to add to your collection:

Woman walks into a DIY shop in Wigan as she needs supplies for painting.

'Do you sell turps my good man?' She asks.

'Yes. What would you like; video turps or audio turps?' 😄

I'll get my coat...

BitOutOfPractice · 04/02/2016 12:11

In this house one of our favourite meals is Crap en Croute

Layer of sliced boiled potatoes. Crispy bacon on top. Then grated cheese. then a tip of beans spread on top. All topped off with patry.

Food. Of. The.Gods

BitOutOfPractice · 04/02/2016 12:12

tip = tin
patry = pastry

x2boys · 04/02/2016 12:14
