Honestly, I have to stop wearing my judgeypants but they're so comfortable

My friend has posted his tea on facebook. It's cottage pie.

Yum!, I hear you cry.

NO. It's mince, mash, THEN A PASTRY LID.

WHHHHHHHHHHYYYYY???

I'm all for double carbing, but really. REALLY.

It's an abomination. (Mind you, I get a little huffy when cottage and shepherds is used interchangeably for pies)

I saw a man once opposite me on the train from Kings Cross. He got out a little box with a huge buttered bread roll, then got out a Gregs bag that contained a steak bake or a chicken slice, I couldn't see which.

The he put it in the roll

I was fascinated.

That's just wrong. I agree re cottage & shepherds pie being used interchangeably too, very irritating

Surely it just depends on what meat people use? Shepherds = lamb, cottage = beef.

We call pie rolls 'pie on a muff' around these parts.

Pasty barm is the best. Barm must have butter on, and you add brown sauce. Squish pasty (meat and potato one) in the barm a bit. Perfect hangover cure

The worst pies are the ones that come in an extremely hot ceramic dish with a puff pastry lid on top.

'Pie on a muff' sounds all kinds of wrong SecretRed. Shock

maddening DP eats that! He sticks a meat pie inside a buttered barm... Still can't get over it, it's basically bread inside more bread Confused. And yes, he is from Lancs...

Barm? Muff?
You northerners and your crazy words for bread.

Can I just interject to say that Booths' butter pie is the food of the Gods?
Yes, I am also from Lancashire, and very, very pregnant Grin Would cheerfully eat it in a buttered barm if it wouldn't terrify my more delicate southern colleagues!

A pie made of slices of potato, with lots of butter, cooked for ages so the potato is soft and the butter almost turns into little bits of sauce, with a shortcrust pastry lid/casing (depending on whether it's an individual or large pie).
siiiiiiiiiiiighs

Mmm pies Grin we moved to Canada, which is lovely but i miss pies and pasties (in or out of bread rolls).

We have the shepherds/cottage pie argument regularly at our house. Shepherds eat sheep for goodness sake, not cows!! Lamb is uncommon and expensive here, so it's only ever cottage pie anyway.

My first reaction to cottage pie pie was what now??? But thinking about it it's actually no worse than a standard pastry pie with mash and gravy which I would happily eat regardless of double carbs.

Let's be honest, pastry makes everything taste better.

DW makes a lovely meat & potato pie. Funnily enough she has a Lancashire heritage. I might have to retire there!

Why is the type of meat never specified in a meat and potato pie? I don't want to eat unidentified meat Hmm

Up north there's no end to what can be put on a buttered bap. Pie, pot noodles, Findus crispy pancakes, pizza...

Might have to try cottage terraced house, it sounds delish and I'd have to squirt Ketchup all over it.

Mmm carbs...

Best bread toll breadcake barm whatever filling: chips, egg, mushy peas and a smear of tomato sauce.

Pie on a roll or bap isn't wrong in bolton it's fab I love a meat pie butty with a dab of brown sauce Grin

Oooh pie barm, haven't had that for years.
Lancashire born and bred, now exiled very far to the south...they have no idea what a barmcake is down here. Or lobby. Or black peas. And I have to ask for 'northern mix' at the chippy to get chips, peas and gravy.

In Aberdeen we have macaroni cheese pies. Pastry with macaroni cheese in it and then baked.
