Just listening to him live on Ken Bruce show - his poor voice, it's nothing like it was in the 1970s is it? Ouch.

He's aged considerably since the 70's. Haven't we all? I know I can no longer drink like a fish, run for the bus, shag all night long and exist on one hour's sleep for two days. YABU to think his voice might never change - of course it would and has.

PuppyMonkey · 03/02/2016 10:59

Oh I know his voice might well change over time and it's to be expected - but what I'm saying is he actually can't sing any more. Give it up, man. Grin

He is rumoured to be one of the only 'big stars' that don't use auto tune when on tour. I wonder if that will change now his voice is going.

He's definitely deteriorated. Saw him live about 10 years ago and he was great. Now when I hear him on tv/radio he reminds me of when Vic Reeves did his 'Club Singer' act on Shooting Stars!

wasonthelist · 03/02/2016 11:46

Agreed, sadly. I have joined a FB group exhaulting hkm and Macca to stop turning out for national events, it's a shame, but it's not as if we don't have any good singers to replace them.

HelpfulChap · 03/02/2016 11:46

YANBU

I also saw him around 10yts ago and he could still cut it but now....no.

Tom Jones can still to the business though.

derxa · 03/02/2016 11:48

His voice may be different but I absolutely love him. His performance on The Royal Variety show was brilliant. How many musicians have done what he has? He has composed brilliant tunes, keeps his backing musicians from years back. He's a British institution and a force for good. YABVVVU

PuppyMonkey · 03/02/2016 11:48

He seems to have also developed a terrible exaggerated American drawl...

Yes, Tom Jones can still sing. Macca not so much.

SirRodneyEffing · 03/02/2016 11:50

YANBU. I heard him in the car earlier, he's definitely gone down hill.

PuppyMonkey · 03/02/2016 11:50

Derxa, I agree he's done loads of good stuff, composed good tunes, is bona fide national treasure etc, but he really, really cannot sing NOW.

VulcanWoman · 03/02/2016 11:55

I'm not too keen on him full stop, I love the songs his friend wrote though.

Backingvocals · 03/02/2016 12:03

Do you mean Bernie Taupin? Confused

He wrote the lyrics not the music.

Dawndonnaagain · 03/02/2016 12:05

I have joined a FB group exhaulting (sic) him and Macca to stop turning out for national events
How unpleasant. If people want to continue to work and are not in a business whereby lives are endangered why shouldn't they?

PuppyMonkey · 03/02/2016 12:09

Ears are endangered though Dawn Grin

OP posts:
VulcanWoman · 03/02/2016 12:09

Yes that's right, your point.......

Nanny0gg · 03/02/2016 12:13

It is sadly the case with many of my musical heroes.

Elton, Paul Simon, Paul McCartney, anyone in Fleetwood Mac.

I wish they would stop and leave my memories intact.

However,Rod Stewart's voice has changed, but I think he can still sing. And James Taylor is also still ok.

PuppyMonkey · 03/02/2016 12:32

Yes Rod still good. Stevie Wonder also

OP posts:
floppyjogger · 03/02/2016 12:43

Radio 2 keep playing Rod at the moment.

His voice has definitely changed but its still great and sounds even more husky and sexy!

Eltons still got it, its just different now he's getting older.

My hearings going with age so I think me and Elton are remaining in sync with each other!

CaptainCrunch · 03/02/2016 12:45

It's the cod American accent he has I can't be doing with.

Lottapianos · 03/02/2016 12:54

Rod Stewart has always sounded like nails down a blackboard to me. And 'Rod Stewart' and 'sexy' should never be in the same sentence Grin

I agree OP, Elton really can't sing anymore. He used to have such a lovely voice, but he's been belting and growling it out for at least 20 years now. You can barely understand a word he sings anymore

I saw Neil Diamond live last year (not my choice, DP's Hmm) and he still sounds great

wasonthelist · 03/02/2016 14:06

How unpleasant. If people want to continue to work and are not in a business whereby lives are endangered why shouldn't they?

He's spoiling the fun is why - and I speak as someone who was a big fan - until I realised that Bernie is the person who's work I really like. As for unpleasant, I can't have a lot of respect for someone who once famously told a female reporter "I hope you get cancer of the cunt".

wasonthelist · 03/02/2016 14:13

Actually, it was more widely reported as “I hope you die of cancer of the clitoris.”

OneMagnumisneverenough · 03/02/2016 14:15

to be fair, he never really could sing though could he? I'm not saying he wasn't a good overall entertainer and he could deliver a product well, but he isn't and never was a voice as such imo.
