Just listening to him live on Ken Bruce show - his poor voice, it's nothing like it was in the 1970s is it? Ouch.

'Actually, it was more widely reported as “I hope you die of cancer of the clitoris.”'

Jesus. He really is a nasty piece of work, talent or no talent

Scholes34 · 03/02/2016 14:26

YANBU. He and Macca should quietly leave the stage. Tom Jones still has it. He and Paul Weller were excellent on Jools Holland's Hootenanny on NYE. I think Elton's ability would be exposed on there.

Janeymoo50 · 03/02/2016 14:27

He has gone the same way as the awful McCartney*. Heard Gilbert O Sullivan recently, he still sounds great.

  • am another that wants those two banned from national events.
dawnviews · 03/02/2016 15:06

Actually, it was more widely reported as “I hope you die of cancer of the clitoris.” Did Elton John say that, and why?

Dawndonnaagain · 03/02/2016 15:06

I neither like nor dislike either singer, however, had you said Elton John is a nasty piece of work for saying this, I would have agreed. Not what you said though. Spoiling the fun...
Really?

PuppyMonkey · 03/02/2016 15:17

What a lovely turn of phrase he has, no wonder he left it to Bernie to write the lyrics Hmm

I saw James Taylor live a year or so back. He still has a great voice.

BabyGanoush · 03/02/2016 15:26

I did not recognise his voice in the deep blue song they play all the time now

wasonthelist · 03/02/2016 15:27

Did Elton John say that, and why?

Well, I wasn't there of course, but a cursory Google will turn up plenty of references to it, including on "Eltonjohnworld.com - more than just a virtual fan club". As to why he said it, you'd have to ask him, wouldn't you? Judging by your tone, I assume you feel there are circumstances that might make it ok?

wasonthelist · 03/02/2016 15:35

Spoiling the fun..Really?
Yes really, a nasty bloke who can't sing any more gets wheeled out to deliver a few hackneyed old songs - where's the fun in that?

Destinysdaughter · 03/02/2016 15:43

I think Rod's new songs have been brilliant and I've never even been a big fan of his!

Destinysdaughter · 03/02/2016 15:46

Also, I saw Prince play at the O2 a few years ago and he had some guest singers come in stage with him. Elton John was one and he sang 'The long and winding road ' with Prince on piano. I was impressed with how good his voice was! But that was probably ten years ago, I guess now he's older it's not so good. We all age sadly...

ShesGotLionsInHerHeart · 03/02/2016 15:52

Oh, he's always been shite.

Cirrrrrrrcle of laaaaaaf. You're not American Elt!!!

19lottie82 · 03/02/2016 16:01

I saw him in concert last June and he was great! Maybe he's just having an off day?

LemonBreeland · 03/02/2016 16:07

Agree Elton is a bit past it now. Even the recording of his new song isn't great.

And Macca, he is 10 times worse. Just awful!

Agree with Tom Jones still having it though. The depth of tone in his voice is incredible. But to be fair even way back when Macca and Elton didn't have voices half as good.

BlondeOnATreadmill · 03/02/2016 16:20

Uugh, I bloody HATE Elton John.

Stupid teeth. Stupid wig. Stupid big glasses that I would happily slap off his face

derxa · 03/02/2016 16:44

What a nasty thread.

fusspot66 · 03/02/2016 16:52

Rocket Man just isn't right without the falsetto.

GloGirl · 03/02/2016 17:02

There are definitely people who it would be ok to say something nasty and vile too.

I probably wouldn't have the balls to but if someone said to Donald Trump they hope he'd get cancer of the cock, I'd laugh not cry about it.

GloGirl · 03/02/2016 17:02

*to not too

wasonthelist · 03/02/2016 17:20

I agree it's about context. I don't think Elton John's comment (to a photographer) was funny or reasonable, and nor can I really think that it would be funny to tell Trump I hoped he got knob cancer. If it was meant to insult Trump, it would just be sinking to his level.

wasonthelist · 03/02/2016 17:21

What a nasty thread.

All of it, or just some bits? Why?

MyFavouriteClintonisGeorge · 03/02/2016 17:29

Voices do go, and it's always really sad. Tony Bennett is another I think doesn't sound good any more.

I am not saying they should stop performing. However, when they do perform on telly and the host lauds them to the skies with the audience whooping and cheering, it can feel uncomfortably like colluding in a sort of deception. Paul McCartney has genuinely sounded poor on the last few occasions I've watched him. Presenters raving about him as great and a legend seems completely fake. He is a legend, he was great.

PuppyMonkey · 03/02/2016 17:32

Sorry derxa - I know you love him but others are allowed to say they don't. And I really do hope he doesn't die of anything terrible despite his terrible voice and what he said to that woman.

It started out as a comment on Elton's singing. Fair enough. Then degenerated into a personal attack. Elton made an unacceptable comment about 10 years ago. No need to add to it.
