It would take two minutes & you have 3 choices - support, protest. abstain.

What's stopping everyone taking part?

Although Shock at that site I just linked too. Apologies for that.
Don't click the link
Just Google Christopher Hambrook

splendide · 31/01/2016 09:25

Jesus - not sure you want to take "news" from there!

splendide · 31/01/2016 09:30

Sorry see you have noticed that already!

It does show the difficulty of discussing/ debating these issues though. I don't want to share a platform with people that put "homosexuality" in scare commas.

ShortcutButton · 31/01/2016 09:31

There are plenty of sources for that story Blush Unfortunately, I just used the first one which came up in a search. Apologies again

ShortcutButton · 31/01/2016 09:38

This is interesting.

in Rio they allow TG prisoners to choose male or female prison

So that article says that there are 700 TG inmates in Rio, 43,00 inmates in total
What it doesn't say is that there are only 1,700 female prisoners. So, it could be that TW make up almost 25% of women's prison population

What it also doesn't say, is that there is massive over crowding in Rio prisons, with 25 sharing a 4 person cell. So, not a stretch to think that non genuine TG will seek to be moved to women's prisons

Shortcutbutton it's taken me a long time to reply as I've been away from mumsnet but I do understand the arguments and I do think the anti trans lobby is behaving in an aggressive way. Your attempt to shut down my point by accusing me of ignorance is a case in point.
My position is that women's rights should be extended to trans women I know that this will be shouted down by the anti trans lobby so I rarely bother to post on these threads because dissent isn't tolerated.

ShortcutButton · 31/01/2016 09:50

gamer I don't think we've had a conversation, have we? Confused

I haven't accused anyone of ignorance. Did you mean me, or someone else?

ShortcutButton · 31/01/2016 09:51

Oh, OK, I've found it. I did wonder accuse you of ignorance

Our definition of 'aggressive' must differ wildly

ShortcutButton · 31/01/2016 09:53

I wasn't intending to 'shut you down' BTW

I just fail to understand how you interpret concerns over women's safety, as 'aggression'

ShortcutButton · 31/01/2016 09:53

I'll be quiet now

MurielKlein · 31/01/2016 10:00

The trans lobby as become so ludicrously self righteous it is becoming self defeating. I for one have undergone a transformation from basically disinterested into being a combination of Julie Burchill and Germaine Greer on the issue ....

Lweji · 31/01/2016 10:06

Regarding prisons, surely there are also male officers in female prisons. The inmates are already at risk of getting pregnant.

I'd imagine that if there are those many trans in Brazil they are more likely to be put together in cells, but many may well be post op or undergoing treatment. (Don't have any data)

OurBlanche · 31/01/2016 10:16

Muriel, having had a look back at my posts, here and elsewhere, on the subject, I seem to be following the same trajectory.

ShortcutButton · 31/01/2016 10:57

Is that your argument llewji? They are at risk already from the guards, so it doesn't matter if we increase that risk by putting male prisoners in female prisons?

It is my understanding that 80-85% of TW don't have genital surgery. Isn't it referee to as 'enforced sterilisation', when it is suggested as a criteria?

ShortcutButton · 31/01/2016 10:58

Me too Muriel and Blanche*. I went from trans-ally, to bored, to disinterested, to worried, to angry to rad-fem

ShortcutButton · 31/01/2016 10:59

Worried and angry the wrong way round. I'm not angry anymore (mostly) but I am worried

venusinscorpio · 31/01/2016 11:58

gamerchick

It's very passive aggressive to accuse the "anti trans lobby" of being aggressive without actually bothering to justify it, and just saying "dissent isn't tolerated" so that you won't post anything at all and not explaining your reasoning.

You are aware how aggressive many transactivists and their allies are, I presume? Did anyone tell you to go and die in a fire? To suck their lady balls? That you're an evil bigot who should be raped as punishment? Or did they just happen to disagree with your personal opinion? Just perhaps, the reason so many people do disagree with you when you post saying you want women's rights extended to trans women in all cases is because there is a real, legitimate concern about the erosion of women's rights and people feel quite strongly about that.

I haven't seen an poll. Can you ask mnhq to put a link to it in your main thread. It will make it easier to cover the gaps and more posters can participate.

Maybe, regardless, it's not such a good idea to leave your 11 year old wonder off trying on clothes and buying them alone in a busy mall or shop, anyway...
