To complain about this TA?

angryschoolmum · 26/01/2016 16:15

I have name changed for this post due to ranting at a few people who I think are on here already.
My DD is 5, she left school today weeping due to the comments of a TA. She said that the TA had told the group 2 minutes left and so she rushed the last of her work. Then the TA said "this is awful" about her work.

I know sometimes 5 year olds tell few lies/fibs re school and what happens. When DD does this and I say I'll ask a teacher she will always backtrack and end up confessing she exaggerated/made it up. When I said I'd call school tonight she said "please do, I don't want to see Mrs XXX again".

WIBU to complain to the head as I don't think awful is a word to tell a five year old about their work? If she'd said something like "it's not your best", "we'll redo it tomorrow" or "I don't think you tried hard with this", surely that would be better at this age.

Hmm
OliviaMumsnet · 26/01/2016 21:46

ahem

Wantagoodname · 26/01/2016 21:52

Is this the first issue you have had with the school op?

Pipbin · 26/01/2016 21:54

So you made the initial call to the school and spoke to the teacher and TA at that point. After that the head called you back. Have I got that straight?

All teachers and assistants stay until 5 at her school as it is in a deprived area and most children are there for breakfast and after school clubs.

So all the teachers and TAs help at the after school club?
I don't follow the need to the after school club and why it needs all the staff to stay and help. In my experience after school clubs are used by working parents. Not the parents who are struggling to get by on benefits and are out of work.

IWillOnlyEatBeans · 26/01/2016 21:54

This probably isn't real but...

I do actually have a photographic memory!

MisForMumNotMaid · 26/01/2016 21:55

Floggingmolly, I wasn't sure about it at first and its not put to the children as i've written it.

The older ones are asked to buddy and help the younger ones. The Teacher/ TA goes over the work with them then they repeat it with the younger ones. So they do it twice as a group and its work that is accessible to them, they become confident in and the little ones lap it up and look up to them like they're teachers which is where the confidence bit comes in. Its probably generally a couple of 1/4 day sessions a term which the children see as a treat.

ilovesooty · 26/01/2016 21:55

I bet it isn't the first issue if the Head was so keen to placate the OP.

sn1ce · 26/01/2016 22:00

I'd love to know what book the OP's 5 year old was enjoying with the Y5s

CaptainCrunch · 26/01/2016 22:01

The poor, probably fictional TA, yabu op, get a life ffs.

Floggingmolly · 26/01/2016 22:02

That does sound a little more reasonable, MisforMum Grin

shazzarooney99 · 26/01/2016 22:05

Pipbin, you hit the nail on the head there, you see when i am in work, which i havent been lately due to unforseen circumstances, but when i am i have to use breakfast club and after club for childcare, i have to pay for it, when i am not working he is not there, i cannot afford it, and everyone that uses that service at school is working, i do not know of one parent that is not.

HumptyDumptyHadaHardTime · 26/01/2016 22:05

Me too.

pippitysqueakity · 26/01/2016 22:12

Well, IME after school and breakfast clubs are not staffed by teachers, the timings just wouldn't work. And I work in a 'deprived' area.
We do have older children reading with younger ones tho, whole classes do it, not just the 'special' ones.

WonderingAspie · 26/01/2016 22:14

3 calls because a TA used the word awful, all this within a space of about an hour. A bit overkill if you ask me.

Your DDs apparent reading level is irrelevant, why even mention it. Oh and your sister was the deputy head. Anything else?

Floggingmolly · 26/01/2016 22:21

Who were the three phone calls from? Confused

EddieStobbart · 26/01/2016 22:24

This school sounds like an exhausting place to work! The ASC at my DCs school is staffed by play workers employed by the ASC - how do the teachers find any time to lesson plan, mark etc? One of the kids in DC2's class had a reading age of 10 at age 5 but not reading comprehension. It was managed in the class. I can't see how the situation as detailed in the OP is helpful to any of the children in the group.

Pipbin · 26/01/2016 22:26

I'm only reading it as one phone call.
The first time the OP called the school - and the TA and teacher came from staffing the after school club (?) - to speak to her.
The second time the head called the op back to reinforce that the TA was going to get a flogging spoken to.

If the teachers are expected to staff the after school club until 5pm then when are they meant to do their marking and preparation?

HumptyDumptyHadaHardTime · 26/01/2016 22:32

I had three calls and now am happy with the outcome.

pipbin ^ this is what the OP said.

SoporificHobnob · 26/01/2016 22:34

My brother has a photographic memory, he's a shit hot lawyer. I could almost pity the accused if he's the prosecution lawyer.

angryschoolmum · 26/01/2016 22:35

Oh my... How hard is it to believe I have a daughter who is well ahead in reading in a disadvantaged area, and so the usual level of the year is well below average. I have never complained/spoken to the head other than on a hen night (with my sister having worked there we have friends in common). I was just appalled at the way the staff member spoke to a child.

ilovesooty · 26/01/2016 22:37

The Head isn't safe from your complaining even on social occasions?

Floggingmolly · 26/01/2016 22:37

So, who made the three calls, op?

CaptainCrunch · 26/01/2016 22:38

But your DD said she didn't want to see the TA again, you seriously think that's reasonable op? Clue..it's not.

IguanaTail · 26/01/2016 22:40

Probably a Nietzshe. My money's on Beyond Good and Evil.

angryschoolmum · 26/01/2016 22:41

Her class teacher, the TA, then the head. I've never complained to her on a social occasion or ever before. If you read my post you would see that.
