not a goady thread. i know they are racist and idiots from Britain first are posting pictures on Facebook. I just wondered what the history is?

i remember them from the 70s and i remember feeling uncomfortable with them then.

OP posts:
Lostmyxmasspirit · 23/01/2016 23:37

leelu there were several news articles about that labelling the retailer racist. Saying that by reducing the selling price of the black dolls they were giving the impression that black people were worth less than white people. Fucking ludicrous - your idea is probably correct - they didn't sell as many so were trying to clear the stock

fidel1ne · 23/01/2016 23:39

There's nothing to stop people opining (here oe anywhere) is there Lost? But confidently asserting that people will believe something (dubious) that you tell them to believe, possibly to their own detriment is different to opining.

Interesting that you feel the need to make personal, off-topic attacks on me rather than address the points.

Lostmyxmasspirit · 23/01/2016 23:40

Funny that you always seem to target one person on a thread. I find that offensive.

fidel1ne · 23/01/2016 23:41

So you want me to disagree with someone saying nothing objectionable? Or disagree with either everyone or noone? Confused

Leelu6 · 23/01/2016 23:41

People claiming to be victims of racism because of their religion. That's a lifestyle choice and makes a mockery of people who are victims of actual racism.

Again, not sure how this relevant. However, can you see how attacks on women in hijab (a headscarf that is often worn for religious reasons) is racist?

Is the woman not a victim of racism because she was attacked for wearing the hijab (and in most cases, is Asian, Arab etc?) Religion and race are often linked.

I'm hiding this thread now before it turns into a witch hunt

NickiFury · 23/01/2016 23:43

But lost almost everyone is targeting you. Mainly because your posts are a bit confusing and they're trying to understand what you're actually trying to say. I actually think that fid has been one of the less aggressive posters. She's actually asking you what you mean rather than jumping on you.

fidel1ne · 23/01/2016 23:44

Well I wasn't wrong about 'weird' Confused

Dawndonnaagain · 23/01/2016 23:47

Lost what is your problem? It is an historical fact that golliwogs are racist. It is blindingly obvious that legitimate museums are not. People who buy golliwogs are purchasing a racist toy. This is not a matter of opinion, it is a fact, ergo why the fuck would anyone wish to do so?

Leelu6 · 23/01/2016 23:48

Lost, the newspapers are in the business of selling papers. They will invent a 'public uproar' if need be. I doubt many people in real life thought much of it.

CallaLilli · 23/01/2016 23:51

Lost what is your problem?

I'll take a stab in the dark and say congenital idiocy?

shazzarooney99 · 23/01/2016 23:51

A black person is not a slave today so why should golliwogs therefore be blacklisted these days? i remeber golliwogs being on jam lids. We also have black dolls and white dolls so whats so different? shouldnt children see things that are different colours?

CallaLilli · 23/01/2016 23:52

x 2...

NickiFury · 23/01/2016 23:54

shazza a gollywog is NOT a representation of a black person it's a white person dressed up as a black person - "black face". Please go and google that term before make even more of a fool of yourself.

Leelu6 · 23/01/2016 23:56

Shazza...there are plenty of black dolls for sale. That's fine.

Gollywogs are caricatures of black people - jet black skin, red or white over-large clown lips, woolly hair. They were based on the 'hideous black gnomes' written by the writer who invented them.

AlpacaLypse · 23/01/2016 23:57

LEM did this thread get sparked off by the one earlier in Chat about selling some Robertson's Marmalade golliwog badges? I did join in on that one, on the 'sell them, that was then, this is now' side. I know your not a troll btw, you've been here a long time, since well before Jeffrey...

I stick to my position there. If we try to pretend that gollywogs never existed, we are denying a segment of our history. Like it or not, as a cultural group we've come through a lot of stages, some of which are in our living history. For example, it's considerably less than 50 years ago that discriminating in the workplace on grounds of sex was made illegal, and as most of us have noticed, it's still happening in practice right now.

Lol.

BlueSmarties76 · 24/01/2016 00:00

[sigh]

These threads never end well.... Guaranteed to bring out every opposing faction on MN so they can all have a big bust up. It's like reading a more sophisticated version of the Daily Fail comments section sometimes.

Leelu6 · 24/01/2016 00:01

I'm hiding this thread now before it turns into a witch hunt

Ah, the good old 'witch hunt' card.

MaisyMooMoo · 24/01/2016 00:04

I love Golly Dollys as dolls but obviously not what they originally stood for. Clearly they are still popular with many. www.redbubble.com/shop/golliwog+t-shirts

NickiFury · 24/01/2016 00:05

Yes and the taking issue with one particular poster in order to justify flouncing off the thread after you've made such a tit of yourself.

Dawndonnaagain · 24/01/2016 00:05

shazza read the history.

lorelei9 · 24/01/2016 00:06

Lem, I hope you've found the answer in the madness
Probably best to stick with Google

Bertrand, cross referencing to that thread about feminism, your answer here is a classic example of why I shy away from asking when I don't understand something.

Honestly, if I were five years younger I would not be able to make nor tail or your answer, and I know the OP mentioned the 70s but it is possible to live life without hearing absolutely every piece of language that applies to everything. I'm not white and I haven't heard many of the terms that some people find racist, I learn new ones all the time.

i remember asking my parents what WOG meant as a child and they didn't know.

I sometimes think MN should implement an exam before registration, people are made to feel foolish for no reason.

Dawndonnaagain · 24/01/2016 00:06

Maisy, they are not golly dollys, they are golliwogs.

YouthHostellingWithChrisEubank · 24/01/2016 00:09

I'm guessing Lost hasn't heard of Godwin's Law or she wouldn't have brought the Nazis up on this thread, losing herself the debate as laid down by internet law.
