To make nanny and DC travel economy?

We are planning a trip to NY in the autumn and plan to take nanny, DD who will be 6 and DS who will be 16 months.

DH and I will be flying business, partially because I am a crap flyer despite flying frequently and partly because we have quite a lot of air miles that we want to make the most of.

The plan is to bring nanny on the 5 day trip so she can help out with the travelling and babysit for us on three of the nights. I've discussed it with her and she's very eager to come, and the plan is she will have 2 days and 2 evenings completely free to do as she pleases, plus TOIL of 6 days. We will of course pay for all hotels/flights/meals out and she's welcome to join in with us on her days off if she wishes. She also gets her own room whilst we have a 2 bed family room.

The difference between economy and club is about 2.5k per ticket, which whilst we are not poor is still a fair chunk of money.

So AIBU to fly business whilst she flies economy? And will DS need his own seat or will he need to go on one of our laps?

yanbu
she will have fun

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 17/01/2016 19:11

YANBU.

rookiemere · 17/01/2016 19:12

Can you hang on while I get some popcorn . This should be good.

wickedwaterwitch · 17/01/2016 19:13

YANBU - it's completely reasonable

Won't your dd want to be with you though?

Bluecheese22 · 17/01/2016 19:14

Are you actually serious?! Talk about Upstairs Downstairs.

witsender · 17/01/2016 19:14

Is there a reason the kids would fly with her not you? Otherwise, yanbu. Maybe premium economy if there is such a thing long haul, just for the leg room if nothing else.

wickedwaterwitch · 17/01/2016 19:15

Mind you at £2.5k I'd be telling the 6yo that kids aren't allowed in business and letting her fly with the nanny.

CaffeineBomb · 17/01/2016 19:15

rookie budge up I have bought Wine

OpheliasWeepingWillow · 17/01/2016 19:15

Do it. I've done this before and am guilt free.

WineOrSleep · 17/01/2016 19:15

Ds as under 2 can be classed as an infant, though that will mean she will need to hold him on her lap / he won't be provided a meal for the whole flight unless you can book a seat with a bassinet for him.

I see absolutely no problem with your original post, she's an employee not a friend, and I think you're being very generous with her time off there, have a lovely trip and enjoy nyc! Smile

BooAvenue · 17/01/2016 19:15

rookie I think I need to don my tin hat Blush

If IABU then I will pay for her but 5k is a lot of money (assuming DS doesn't need his own seat).

Taking a nanny on a family holiday doesn't float my boat either but to each their own.

rosewithoutthorns · 17/01/2016 19:16

are you for real? :)

Sparkletastic · 17/01/2016 19:16

YANBU - sounds like she's still getting a good deal. But will DCs not track you down on plane like heat seeking missiles? Mine would.

Catphrase · 17/01/2016 19:16

theres probably an official standard for this, but my concerns would be;

  1. if there's an emergency (unlikely I know) your leaving that to someone else to deal with and I'd sooner want to be with my kids.
  2. one six year old to entertain would keep me busy on a flight let alone a baby.
  3. the baby would be on her lap for the flight?
  4. would those flight days count as her days on duty?
BooAvenue · 17/01/2016 19:16

Yes sorry I wasn't quite clear, the kids would be flying economy. I'd probably share Looking after DS between the three of us as I'd feel mean making her have a baby on her lap for 7 hours.

Oh how the other half live.....

We don't even have a nanny and if we did we certainly wouldn't take one on our holiday with us as I feel a family holiday should be that. Family

AwfulBeryl · 17/01/2016 19:17

This will go pear shaped, but I don't think yabu.
If I had the money and a Nanny I would do the same, tbh I would probably leave my dc behind with the Nanny and go for longer Grin

LaurieFairyCake · 17/01/2016 19:17

I think it's a terrible idea. Your children will be running up and down the plane wanting to find you.

Your nanny will find it really hard to cope with both at once.

If you really can't fly economy then your dh absolutely should.

And it's the same damn plane, so I've no idea why you think flying business is easier if you have anxiety ? - surely you'll have less anxiety if you have sight of your children?

wickedwaterwitch · 17/01/2016 19:17

I'd assume flight time will be paid work for the nanny, she'll be working

RNBrie · 17/01/2016 19:17

Ds won't need his own seat until he is 2.

I don't think you are being that unreasonable buying your nanny an economy ticket but I think it's wildly unreasonable to expect her to have your dc for the flight. Maybe buy dd an economy ticket but expect her to be on your lap for the flight... They are your children after all...

GabiSolis · 17/01/2016 19:17

I can see why you would do this and in theory I think YANBU. It just doesn't sit right with me though.

WaitrosePigeon · 17/01/2016 19:17

This will be good!

Backingvocals · 17/01/2016 19:18

Gawd I would, if I had the money.

witsender · 17/01/2016 19:19

I would want my kids with me, likewise they would hate to fly and not be with us if we are on the same flight.
