I have caused substantial vexation to a friend by putting my bin in the dishwasher

She asked why the top rack was on the bench.

I explained the kitchen bins were in there. She wasn't impressed as that meant the top spray wasn't working. I pointed out its the inside of the bin that needs cleaning not the outside.

She is uncomfortable with the dishwasher only operating with one spray.

I have clean bins with zero effort and can live with this.

AIBU .... Or should clean bins have taken effort and more water to clean?

I'm one of them there pesky slightly/vaguely bleach-hating environmentalists, so hate dishwasher and washing machine going on unless fully loaded.

I pour half a kettle of boiling water and some washing up liquid in my kitchen bins about once a week (1 bucket for general waste, 1 flexi trug for recycling, 1 food caddy) and leave for a couple of hours then drain and air dry. I reckon that's fine for hygiene.

I've put the highchair straps in mine. Came out lovely!

Gona put the toothbrush holder in next cycle! Never though of it!

Gabilan · 15/01/2016 22:20

I can't understand the potty/loo seat thing. I thought the MNer who put the loo brush in her dishwasher was the stuff of internet legend. But, well, just yuck. Yuck on a stick.
Trainers can go in the washing machine. As for pet food bowls, my cats lick my food plates and then I wash them by hand. I have yet to die from this.

NorksAreMessy · 15/01/2016 22:25

The only problem with Skittles vodka is that it makes your lovely vodka taste of Skittles...bleurgh.

I am another in the 'chuck it all in the dishwasher' camp. Including dog bowls, and indeed other plates and dishes the dogs have prewashed. The temperature in the dishwasher is very high. I feel less disgusted by this than by skittles bloody vodka.

MaisieDotes · 15/01/2016 22:30

Sorry norks Grin

3luckystars · 15/01/2016 22:30

We put the top of the hob metal thinking the dishwasher and anything else that needs to be washed that will fit. Dh put his sunglasses in once but I think they fell in by accident. They came out perfect though!

I knew a woman who used to wash her chandelier in the dishwasher.

dementedma · 15/01/2016 22:34

I don't have a dishwasher, wouldn't know where to begin. I run some hot water and disinfectant into the bin, sluice it round, chuck water down loo and stick bin outside to dry.Takes about 3 minutes and the loo gets a clean too!

magpie17 · 15/01/2016 22:35

I happily let my cats lick my own plates, then I happily put them in the dishwasher and equally happily eat off them myself the next day. No issue. Just be glad you're not invited to my house for dinner!

Still hate loo brushes though...

DragonmotherKhaleesi · 15/01/2016 22:42

Can someone please explain the issue of pet bowls going in the dishwasher? Confused

nortonhouse · 15/01/2016 22:43

Just about anything that will fit - as long as you use discretion about segregating certain things from certain other things. :/
Toothbrushes and cat food dishes are the least of it; those just go in with the dishes.
I figure if the contents of the dishwasher are too hot to touch when the cycle finishes, and they've spent a couple of hours in soap and water, everything in there is sterile, more or less!

Amazed at all these Mumsnetters who put dirty germy things like toilet seats, dishes your dogs have licked, and bins into a dishwasher but who don't believe in toilet brushes.

I'm agnostic. I just can't believe that we are alone in the wc.

squigglepants · 15/01/2016 22:48

I used to put the kids Crocs in mine, came out lovely

Gabilan · 15/01/2016 22:48

My bins are just dirty. I don't care.

TeenyfTroon · 15/01/2016 22:59

I look upon the dishwasher as a static washer and the washing machine as a moving washer. Then I decide which one is appropriate for which job. Doesn't matter what it is. Only got it wrong once when I put my class Lego in the washing machine. It chewed its way out of the pillow case and made the repair man laugh. The bill wasn't funny though.

FiveShelties · 15/01/2016 23:00

Years ago I had a dishwasher which failed mid programme with the door firmly locked so was full of half washed pots and cutlery when the repair man arrived. I could just imagine his face (and mine) if it had been full of loo brushes and toilet seats.Grin

HoneyDragon · 15/01/2016 23:15

Erm I don't think any of my friends would comment that I put knickers in the dishwasher, I have a washing machine. Confused

But a loo brush is covered in shit and dishes are covered in sometimes cat food... Not the same thing surely?

I grant you that the wellies and trainers may have stepped in shit, but I for one keep those separate from my dishes.

magpie17 · 15/01/2016 23:18

Sorry - I was responding to people who can't understand hating loo brushes but also putting random stuff in the dishwasher

BrandNewAndImproved · 15/01/2016 23:24

I always put the dustpan and brush in for thr last cycle at work. I also put the hob tops in and anything else that will fit!

SnuffleGruntSnorter · 15/01/2016 23:26

SnuffleGruntSnorter · 15/01/2016 23:28
