To just leave nursing

Hi I posted the other day about my new job. Im a nurse and I hate it Ive had enough and i just want out. Im married and ttc but no news yet. I just cant hold on much longer. I cant believe Ive wasted 12 years of my life. I just want to hand my notice in and get agency or bank work as I cant cope with FT but im non clinical so ill need to relearn skills. I just hope im young enough still to do it. Got 10 grand savings so a bit of a safety net. Worried about pension etc but i just cant live like this

I am all for not staying somewhere that makes you unhappy but I would find something else before you go, particularly in light of the fact you are trying to conceive.

Thanks I just feel dread everyday and have done for years despite what i do. Its so awful at the moment

There are so many different areas in Nursing, there must be a role you'd enjoy.
Occupational Health, research, travel health, general practice?

Before you pack your stethoscope bags do look at other options.

I was really unhappy on the wards and found a part time job that I love.

Thanks ive moved around but everywhere is crap and im so unhappy.

I'm looking, but seems most jobs are ward based, lots of competition for the others, plus you'll need relevant experience to apply for them.

Wards generally are so tough to work on now, people leaving all the time.

Yanbu I left last yr I was an RMN I, m not working right now as ds2 is severely autistic so I, m his carer work were incredibly unsupportive have no suggestions as what you might do but I would hate to be back working in the NHS.

I'm a nurse and fed up of not getting a break, I'm so bloody tired of how busy we are.

It sounds like you've got a decent chunk of savings but obviously they won't last for ever. What will you do in 6mths time? In a year? Presumably you'd stop TTC or can your DH/DP's income support a child as well as the two of you?

I'm a ward-based RMN and I sympathise. I think about quitting on an almost daily basis sometimes. Constant violence, staffing shortages, excessive paperwork, and an inability to get out on time or get breaks, and a feeling that I just spend the whole day 'fire-fighting' emergencies rather than providing good care is just soul-destroying.

But yes, I would say have something lined up first. Decent jobs aren't easy to come by at the moment, and bank / agency work isn't a reliable source of income.

There can be a tendency to assume the grass is greener so I wouldn't leave until you've really worked out what you want to do. Most jobs have an element that people don't like. What if you retrain and do something else and then in a few year's time hate that too?

Before you do anything, take a holiday. Call in sick if you must, but just go away for a bit and think relax.

I think you need to stick it out until you find something else. You can't hate all the different places you could work. And it's a lot easier to find a job when you're in one.

Especially if your TTC.

Get looking for other roles straight away. Or could you go part time? Give you some breathing space?

Ive only been in job a month but ive hated my last 2 jobs and now I hate this. I could manage on 3 shifts a week bank or agency. I have looked into this. Our mortgage and bills are smallish but i wouldnt let dh take the stress of that its unfair. I hate feeling out of my depth and stressed and generally crap

If you're only a month in, then could it just be that you've not settled into the new position yet?

I've felt awful a month in to every job I've ever had I think, panicked, stressed, I hate it, oh my God what have I done, I'll never get the hang of this etc etc. It passes. I always think I need 6 months before I start to feel more in control.

How long were you in the previous 2 jobs?

Would you say you are a bit of a perfectionist?

Previous jobs were 3 years and 18 months. My last job nearly pushed me over the edge with anxiety i actually thought i was going to keel over

Sounds like you need a career change, is there anything you think you would be good at?

I have no idea i feel so worn down. I need to think over the weekend what i want to do. Ive been on ADs in the past just to cope with a job its pathetic

The thing with nursing for me was nt the job or the patients but the constant pressure more and more paperwork if things went wrong the managers blamed the ward staff the never took into account the lack of staff etc there was little or no support from management ,could you drop a grade even working as a HCA for a while? I know a few people who have done this.

Rmn also 7 yrs in. Fed up of the whole thing but particularly the staff and politics and bullying- every workplace I've been in has been a nasty place to work. I think some of it is never having worked a shift fully staffed; jealousy and competition; being bright but not getting anywhere because 'you are too intelligent' and so on.. Fed up of the constant people's friends getting promotions. It's rife

The patients although verbally aggressive and physically aggressive at times are hardly the problem - u get used to it. I hate how our wages are attacked and cut and we are expected to survive on 'care' and a nice warm feeling

Will im the same. I wouldnt mind doing admin work just for some relief. Obvs financially it would be crap but i just need out
