Hi I posted the other day about my new job. Im a nurse and I hate it Ive had enough and i just want out. Im married and ttc but no news yet. I just cant hold on much longer. I cant believe Ive wasted 12 years of my life. I just want to hand my notice in and get agency or bank work as I cant cope with FT but im non clinical so ill need to relearn skills. I just hope im young enough still to do it. Got 10 grand savings so a bit of a safety net. Worried about pension etc but i just cant live like this

Feel your pain ladies! It's not just ward nurses who feel it. I'm a specialist nurse and it's a nightmare!!!!

Allgunsblazing · 17/01/2016 12:36

3littlefrogs, yes, but you are also at the company's full disposal. You get sent home when there is no work and asked t stay over and beyond when there is. They can terminate whenever, no nhs pension etc.

3littlefrogs · 17/01/2016 13:40

Hmm - yes maybe not ideal for a 29 year old.

I have a friend who is an ECG technician in a private hospital and loves her job. Been there for years.

Anyway - hopefully Faye will have an idea of what she would like to do and will find a way to pursue it.

OP - I wish you success in whatever you decide. Most of us will be working into our 60s/70s, so plenty of time to retrain and change careers. I have trained and retrained several times over the last 40 years.

It is sad when people are so stressed out they feel the only option is to leave the profession all together.

Hi, I am a nurse, have done it for 11 years and have had enough, it is so stressful, ridiculous amounts of paperwork, constantly being shortstaffed and not much time to spend with patients. The job is so different from when I first started. I am wanting to leave but just don't know what to do next.

Faye12345 · 18/01/2016 12:52

Hi feline. I feel the pain. What type of role you in? I feel a bit better today but still looking. Ive applied for bank work over the weekend too so will await to hear back Hmm

It will be a drop in pay but they are absolutely desperate for TAs in most special schools with progression to study to be an sn teacher. There is a massive shortage.
I realise it's not nursing, but there is still a heavy care element to it if that's what you went into nursing for.

FannyFifer · 18/01/2016 16:05

I do two different nursing jobs. Complex care at home which I like & i'm also on the bank for a couple of nursing homes.
Care of the elderly is what I love but nursing homes are horrendous, I don't feel able to keep everyone safe, so much paperwork, I'm the only nurse on a shift but barely see a patient.
Thinking of not continuing with it to be honest.

Babyroobs · 18/01/2016 17:17

YANBU. I work in a very busy unit which in the past ten years has changed beyond recognition and some days there is barely time to give decent basic care let alone all the extra support that our (mainly end of life) patients and relatives need. Every shift I think of jacking it in but ultimately it's my great colleagues and my NHS pension that keep me there. At almost 50 years of age and having worked in the same place for 15 years, it would not be easy to get out of Nursing and do something else but I do consider it frequently because the toll on my physical and mental health is getting worse to the point where iI think it just isn't worth it anymore. I would say get out while you can !

Hedgehogparty · 18/01/2016 18:16

So many good nurses are leaving, there is just too much stress and pressure to cope with. No one seems to care and instead of trying to improve the situation, Managers just trawl the globe for people willing to work here.

I don't think any job is worth your health, there must be other options out there.

Faye12345 · 18/01/2016 19:43

Thanks ladies for your help. Ive looked into nurse banks again today. Had a better day but still feel Confused. One of the other girls I started with feels the same too.

Hello dear OP,

Fellow nurse here.
What have you done so far in your career and what do you do now?
You must have the right temperament for it, you did your three years training, it would be such a shame to lose you from our fabulous profession!
Community is amazing, I did nearly two years and have just made the jump to be a palliative care nurse. Clinical skills can be brushed up on, as long as you have the passion!
So, what do you fancy?

Butteredparsnips · 18/01/2016 21:12

faye when are you due to re validate?

It sounds like you need a break, but would you want to make sure that you have done enough study / practice hours that you can keep your registration?

What do you enjoy doing? If you can afford a drop in salary would you consider retraining? Another field? Governance, education, a specialism?

Perhaps have a look at emotional fatigue? Hospice UK published a report a few months ago. It describes good and bad organisations. I am guessing yours is in the latter category. The point is it is probably the organisation, and not you that is at fault, but having said that, you need to be able to put yourself - and your health - first.

Faye12345 · 19/01/2016 17:40

Hi ladies. I revalidate in September. I really dont know what i want to do but could take a salary drop. Ive done community nurse, hospital throughput, poc/nh nurse and now a specialist nurse so varied x
