Bloody aspartame poisoning...

FoofooLeSnoo · 11/01/2016 14:46

Is not real and has been disproved time and time again. Aibu to get cross every time someone says its toxic blah blah blah! There is one group of people who should avoid it if they have a certain rare condition otherwise it's completely safe.
Rant over!

Mind you, I don't mind it in mint chewing gum, because the mint masks the flavour quite well... Grin

SnuffleGruntSnorter · 11/01/2016 22:06

slips copper bracelet onto Dino's arm for good measure

SnuffleGruntSnorter · 11/01/2016 22:07

I'll even chick in a few Amber bracelets for your kids...

Ifrit · 11/01/2016 22:07

Maybe have a few shots of Aloe Vera gel, just for added safety?

M48294Y · 11/01/2016 22:10

The thing that seriously pisses me off about aspartame is that it is so fucking hard to avoid!

Out of 10 different brands/varieties of squash in my local medium sized Co-Op there are NONE that are not "No Added Sugar".

I have to go to Waitrose, Sainsburys or my local organic shop to buy something that doesn't have this unpopular additive. That's what pisses me off.

I love a non-diet coke with ice and a wedge of lime about 3 or 4 times per year.

M48294Y · 11/01/2016 22:13

You can't get a soft drink in a pub without artificial sweeteners either. Yuck!

roundaboutthetown · 11/01/2016 22:16

Ah, you see, that would be because the powers that be think they know what's good for you, M48294Y. Like they thought deliberately giving rabbits myxomatosis was a good idea, and introducing cane toads to Australia. History is littered with examples of scientists introducing one thing to discourage another thing and not realising what the full impact of that would be until it was too late. Grin

ghostyslovesheep · 11/01/2016 22:19

damn those pesky scientists with their vaccines and cures for Polio and cancer fighting genes - the bastards will no one think of the bunnies

(at least it made them easier for this 12 year old city kid to shoot when on holiday)

roundaboutthetown · 11/01/2016 22:22

Scientists can be very useful if they don't get too arrogant with their claims... I believe the whole fat-is-bad thing resulted in food manufacturers having to change the way they manufactured food in ways that resulted in them having higher sugar and salt content to retain flavour...

Kanga59 · 11/01/2016 22:28

YANBU. there is nothing wrong with aspartame at all. My son is on a medical diet whoch excludes sugar. He gets all his sweetener from fake sugar. The great ormond street doctors are fine this! I quizzed them on it when we started the diet

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 11/01/2016 22:30

The stuff is vile and I would rather stick pins in my eyes than eat or drink anything with it in. I don't drink alcohol and finding a soft drink without any sweeteners in is almost impossible. I used to drink J2O but they ruined that with sweeteners so now all I can have is soda and lime. Buying squash is a nightmare as well but I've now discovered Belvoir Farms cordial - it's just a shame it's a fiver a bottle!

wasabipeanut · 11/01/2016 22:40

Pussycat I have a selection of fruit teas which I really enjoy rather than soft drinks but you have to be a hot drink person. I like that Belvoir cordial too although just drink water most if the time.

Sorry to digress. Aspartame - nothing that tastes that vile can be good. Bit like margarine - everyone thought it was healthier than butter but it tasted so rank I just stuck with butter. Now it turns out I was right and that the margarines around 15-20 years ago were full of seriously wierd hydrogenated shit.

kali110 · 11/01/2016 23:55

What is it that everybody can taste??? I can't taste anything but my drink!

Jw35 · 12/01/2016 00:10

It tastes horrible. It's ok to not trust something without a scientist telling you! Smoking used to be considered good for you..its artificial. Enough said

FoofooLeSnoo · 12/01/2016 07:04

Brussels taste pretty gross and bitter but they're good for you! What about green tea? That's as bitter as hell but I bet you all love that!

bruffin · 12/01/2016 07:26

I like brussels
I get left with a horrible aftertaste thst lingers and feels like a coating on my tongue. It is not psychological as i can tell when recipes have been changed ie nestea or cider .
It completes defeats the object of having a nice refreshing drink., because iit doesnt taste refreshing at all.
If buyers want a diet drink then make a seperate product not change the existing and pretend its because the government wants us to be healthier which is what nestea told me.
Stevia is just as bad but that has a too sweet taste.

roundaboutthetown · 12/01/2016 07:45

?! If you wanted a bitter drink, you wouldn't be trying to buy a sweet one! Comparing aspartame, which nobody claims is actually good for you, with sprouts, which are claimed to be good for you, is just plain daft!

Anyone for sprout cordial? Grin

HeadDreamer · 12/01/2016 07:54

kali there is a disgusting aftertaste. If I have a drink with aspartame in it, I would want a glass of water to wash that taste away. I know a friend who said it is safer to drink beer because you never know what is served with soft drinks! (He meant the aspartame taste). I agree and in work meetings, I always go for the water unless I can see the pacakging of the soft drinks and juiced served.

I have bought that stuff accidentally a few times. Last was a bottle of Ribena! There is only a little difference in the pacakging, usually no added sugar, to tell the two apart. I threw the drinks I bought with aspartame in the bin.

HeadDreamer · 12/01/2016 07:56

Have not had stevia. Hopefully it tastes better?

HeadDreamer · 12/01/2016 07:58

I am sorry but green tea has a different bitter taste. I drink coffee black too. If you can't taste aspartame, then you have no idea what those who can are complaining about.

I hate brussels sprouts. Could never stand them.

HeadDreamer · 12/01/2016 08:00

Not all bitterness taste the same. Surely anyone should know that?

Are you going to tell me that white sugar, maple syrup, golden syrup and honey all taste the same? And that spreding them on toasts, you find no difference?

FoofooLeSnoo · 12/01/2016 09:16

The comparison about Brussels and green tea and aspartame was in response to the claim 'nothing that tastes that vile can be good for you' which is clearly not true!

"Sorry to digress. Aspartame - nothing that tastes that vile can be good."

Oh, bollocks.

PippinMcGriffin · 12/01/2016 09:32

Well I love squash and practically live on the stuff so I must be one of those rare people that like the taste.Hmm

AppleSetsSail · 12/01/2016 09:52

I absolutely luuurve the taste of aspartame - different strokes for different folks. I can't abide the taste of sugar in drinks.

I've been drinking 12 several cans of Diet Coke daily for about 30 years, so if aspartame is bad for you I'm in serious trouble.

Refined sugar = bad. We know this.
