Is not real and has been disproved time and time again. Aibu to get cross every time someone says its toxic blah blah blah! There is one group of people who should avoid it if they have a certain rare condition otherwise it's completely safe.
Rant over!

Snuffle - my Pepsi is flat, will my teeth be OK?

Katenka · 11/01/2016 15:10

Where is the definitive source for it being safe?

there is no definitive source that most stuff is safe.

heavens2betsy · 11/01/2016 15:11

Well I don't care what the science behind it is.

I hate the stuff, it tastes vile and I have made the decision not to buy anything with it in and not to give it to my kids.
I would rather they had natural sugars (in moderation) than nasty tasting chemicals.
My kids have always drunk fruit juice and water and now they are older they drink the 50% fruit squash.
I'm not saying it causes cancer or brain tumours or whatever the story is but I don't want my kids to be pumped full of chemicals.

BarbaraofSeville · 11/01/2016 15:11

It tastes disgusting, which is more than enough reason for me to avoid it.

SomebodySedateMe · 11/01/2016 15:11

thehouse you'd be hard pushed to find definitive anything in this day and age. The safety of all foods and drinks, artificially produced or not, is constantly under scrutiny. However the NHS take on aspartame makes it pretty clear that it's safe. I trust it more than websites the have the word "conspiracy" in the URL.

BarbaraofSeville · 11/01/2016 15:12

It's impossible to prove that anything is 100% safe.

FoofooLeSnoo · 11/01/2016 15:13

But I'm not a dog. So it's all good.
Maidofstars, I don't think I know you, believe me I've been banging on about this for years!

Risky, you opted for the sugary option. Not sure if the increased sugar mitigates lower carbonic acid concentration. Someone must have done a study on it somewhere at some point. But then how good was that study? We're their methods valid?

I'll happily perform your ECHO and blood cultures to check the decay hasn't given you infective endocarditis though.

choosing a soft drink is a risky business Wink

heavens2betsy · 11/01/2016 15:14

Is it true that it is banned in the USA? Or is that just another rumour?

SomebodySedateMe · 11/01/2016 15:17

Diet Pepsi dropped it in the USA. It's not banned.

Katenka · 11/01/2016 15:18

I hate the stuff, it tastes vile and I have made the decision not to buy anything with it in

I don't like either. That's fine. It's when people start claiming it's going to kill you that's the issue

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 11/01/2016 15:22

Of course the biggest cause of death is...

...life.

Ban it! Ban it now!!!

Micah · 11/01/2016 15:22

I really wouldnt go on the USA. They banned kinder eggs for being dangerous, but think buying guns from the corner shop is fine.

peggyundercrackers · 11/01/2016 15:23

heavens2betsy tell me how you do that please? animals are pumped full of chemicals before they are killed. crops and veg are sprayed with chemicals before they reach the shelf. water has chemicals pumped into - fresh food and tinned food in supermarkets have chemicals in them to keep them fresh longer

I don't believe there is anything you will have which doesn't have chemicals in it.

Twinklestein · 11/01/2016 15:24

It makes me itch violently all over.

SnuffleGruntSnorter · 11/01/2016 15:24

How do you define 'chemical'? Please tell me Smile

chibsortig · 11/01/2016 15:25

Everything is made from chemicals .....

SwedishEdith · 11/01/2016 15:27

It tastes absolutely horrible. I did read this the other day about how it, maybe, disrupts how the body deals with sugar/sweet things though

PandasRock · 11/01/2016 15:28

It makes my dd1 lose continence.
That's a pretty big side effect.

It also tastes shit.

I object to the way 'low sugar' is made to sound all healthy and virtuous, as if ALL that has happened is that they put less sugar in.

When in fact it just means that edible artificial foul-tasting chemicals have been added instead.

IjonTichy · 11/01/2016 15:35

Love it when people complain about it containing 'chemicals'

Bloody aspartame poisoning...
LittleMissGeneric · 11/01/2016 15:35

I avoid it as it gives me terrible stomach cramps and headaches, I wouldn't tell anyone it's toxic though. I can't eat strawberries either especially in hayfever season, but I don't claim they are toxic either Grin

What does annoy me is my husband claims because he saw something on the news saying sweetners don't affect most people, then I'm making it up that it affects me Angry

What also frustrates me is that it's creeping into more and more drinks, I drink a lot of squash, but my choice is getting narrowed down a lot, there is basically high juice, and even then there isn't many!

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 11/01/2016 15:35

If I drink aspartame it goes straight through me, has same effect on DD. Not harmful, but can be inconvenient

We'll stick to real sugar

Birdsgottafly · 11/01/2016 15:35

It's Acesulfame K that I react to.

There is an acceptable daily intake, for both substances, apparently.

You can't avoid Phenylalanine (well I can I'm Vegan, Polishes Halo), because it's a naturally occurring chemical found in Animal sources of Protein.
