Should I take the day off work tomorrow for dh?

Posting here for higher traffic. Dh had been feeling unwell all week and yesterday informed me that he thought he might have a water infection. Said if he was feeling the same this morning he would go to the walk in centre.

Well he was feeling MUCH worse this morning. Feverish, shakey and can't per at all.

Walk in diagnosed a UTI and prescribed antib's. He hasn't been well at all today. Had been fevrish all day and vomited (only once).
He is obviously taking the day of work tomorrow. I was intending to go in, however, a friend who is not known for being melodramatic and whom I trust had said if he doesn't go for a wee soon he could end up with a catheter and in a lot of pain. She said someone should stay home with him to keep an eye on him.

Of course if I do need to stay home I wouldn't question it. But what do you think. He does seem quite unwell and he is never sick.
What should I do?

Your poor husband, lucky he's got a good wife looking after him.I hope it's nothing to serious OP and that he's soon feeling alot better.

My poor old Dad has suffered with kidney and bladder problems in the past and they always told us all to err on the side of caution.

HopefulHamster · 10/01/2016 23:56

Hope all is okay and he's getting treatment.

AstridPeth · 11/01/2016 00:44

We are home. It isn't sepsis thank goodness! However, they were very close to admitting him and the nurse said he is very poorly. Dh has very high markers for a UTI and is borderline for requiring IV antib's. He only sent him home tonight on the proviso that I stay home to look after him and if he gets any worse at all then he has to be admitted. The lovely nurse didn't want to admit him there and then as he said Dh would be on a trolley most of the night waiting for a bed to be sorted and he would be better off in his own bed for now getting a good sleep. So I have to keep a close eye on him.
So thank you all- it definitely was the right thing to do to get him checked out and I know what to look out for now over the next few days. I'm just hoping it doesn't get that far.
Thank you again, you have all been a wondeful help x

Thank you for all your well wishes for dh also. He is usually made of strong stuff and actually the nurse at one point (before the results came back) said he either had a very strong constitution as he didn't look ill or he wasn't very sick. He was extremely nice and mentioned this in regards to me saying I was concerned about sepsis. He wasn't expecting dh to be quite as poorly as he obviously is.

Fingers crossed for the night.

AstridPeth · 11/01/2016 00:48

Thank you :-) he is asleep now. I suspect I won't sleep much.

Your dilemma has been solved so as he's asleep, you should go to bed too! Smile

I hope he will improve soon, UTIs are nasty buggers (recently I had one too, I was very ill too)

I'd like to suggest that if you have a health food shop nearby maybe you could buy some cranberry juice (not sugary Ocean Spray!) or some cranberry capsules as they are supposed to aid recovery from a UTI.

And well done for listening to your gut instinct - seems we make the best decisions when we rely on it.

FreakinScaryCaaw · 11/01/2016 01:22

I hope he's a lot better tomorrow.

tiredvommachine · 11/01/2016 02:04

Try get some rest yourself Astrid

LonestarStateOfMind · 11/01/2016 02:58

Well done Astrid for acting and getting him seen to tonight, hope he starts to feel better and you manage to get some sleep.

Praise too for the medics who advised on this thread, after a weekend of weirdness on various other threads I was wondering why I am on this site, this is Mn at its best.

AnotherStitchInTime · 11/01/2016 06:36

Thank goodness. If he seems worse e.g. breathing faster than 20 times a minute, pulse higher than 90 beats a minute, spiking fever that does not reduce or persistently keeps spiking despite medication, appearance of a rash, just doesn't look right (pale, clammy, sweating, wrong colour) or not weeing then take him back in. Make sure he keeps drinking water.

londonrach · 11/01/2016 07:01

Well done op. Hopefully your dh recovers quickly. Sorry for worrying you with my dads story. Xxx

TheBestChocolateIsFree · 11/01/2016 07:06

So glad you've got medical advice. And hurrah for your down to earth not-overreacting mate, who is clearly possessed of very good judgment.

Youarentkiddingme · 11/01/2016 07:07

How is he this morning?

I'm guessing and hoping your work question is now answered and you are staying home?

AstridPeth · 11/01/2016 07:32

No I am definatly staying home for at least today and possibly a few more days depending on how he is. He is feeling no better than yesterday but no worse at the moment either. Keeping a close eye on him. Thank you again for all your advice and well wishes.
Anotherstitch - thank you for that will monitor that :-)

Thank you for the update. I hope your dh gets better very soon.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 11/01/2016 08:03

Stable is good. Hoping for improvement today.
Please take it easy Astrid, it's probably tempting but don't go into housework overdrive ok? Smile
Just rest as much as you can. Take care of you as well lovely

LyndaNotLinda · 11/01/2016 08:18

How scary for you and your DH Astrid. I hope the ABs kick in and he starts to feel better very soon

3littlefrogs · 11/01/2016 08:24

Please make sure he gets regular follow up after this, and prompt treatment for any further symptoms. For the rest of his life if necessary.

UTI/Kidney infection in young men can be very serious and have long term consequences.

I can't stress enough how important this is. A dear friend of mine has just had a kidney transplant, years after a serious UTI. He was supposed to have yearly check ups at hospital but his GP lost his records and he had moved house so didn't get any letters from the hospital.

I hope your DH gets better soon.

FreakinScaryCaaw · 11/01/2016 09:48

Must be worrying for you. I hope he gets well soon.

FancyPuffin · 11/01/2016 09:58

Glad you took him in to be assessed.

Fingers crossed for a speedy mend Flowers

FeliciaJollygoodfellow · 11/01/2016 10:08

I have to say I wouldn't have even considered staying at home with him Blush.

Me being an unsympathetic wife led to DH having to be blue lighted to hospital with swine flu a few years ago. Well, not me, but I just thought he was putting it on, until he collapsed Blush.

Hope he's well soon OP Flowers

madsaz76 · 11/01/2016 11:15

That's an excellent point from 3littlepigs

When he's better he should also see GP for referral to urology. Personally image all men in these circumstances

StarlingMurmuration · 11/01/2016 11:20

Hope he's better soon! I'd second the advice to try cranberry capsules. I had a period a few years ago when I had recurrent UTIs, and started taking cranberry capsules every day.

BoffinMum · 11/01/2016 11:24

Well if the advice is he needs someone at home with him for medical reasons this is vitally important and anyone would take time off work for that, so you can have a clear conscience on that front now, OP. It's become a no-brainer. Really hope he gets better soon.
