Should I take the day off work tomorrow for dh?

Posting here for higher traffic. Dh had been feeling unwell all week and yesterday informed me that he thought he might have a water infection. Said if he was feeling the same this morning he would go to the walk in centre.

Well he was feeling MUCH worse this morning. Feverish, shakey and can't per at all.

Walk in diagnosed a UTI and prescribed antib's. He hasn't been well at all today. Had been fevrish all day and vomited (only once).
He is obviously taking the day of work tomorrow. I was intending to go in, however, a friend who is not known for being melodramatic and whom I trust had said if he doesn't go for a wee soon he could end up with a catheter and in a lot of pain. She said someone should stay home with him to keep an eye on him.

Of course if I do need to stay home I wouldn't question it. But what do you think. He does seem quite unwell and he is never sick.
What should I do?

Get him drink a litre now next hour- he should be drinking plenty with a UTI. If after hour nothing then go back to hospital. It's either because there's nothing to come out or a blockage or bladder problem/kidney.

I coul t pee for 24h with bladder issue but was drinking plenty just bursting. Having a catheter fitted in a and e is no fun. Defo try fluids first!

RealityCheque - I have exactly to small children in my class (do I know you? Lol)
And I haven't even taken time off for myself when perhaps I really should of.
Really struggled last term with a chest infection that seemed to last forever and left me dizzy and shattered. Coughing all the time. But I didn't take 1 day off and actually worked extra to cover breakfast clubs and after school care where needed.
But I am stubborn, and quite often put myself last. It is different when it is someone you love/care about.
But no I don't like taking time off without due course.

Call 111 and talk to them. They can arrange an OOH appt or even an ambulance to come and check him over. Really. Do it now.

KwickNC · 10/01/2016 19:46

My mum (a doctor) normally tells me not to get involved with posts like this but she said she would advise you to go to A&E with him.

did the walk In do bloods etc? They might not even be the right antibiotics.

AstridPeth · 10/01/2016 19:48

Ok he has just ran himself a bath. To see if the warmth helps the aches and pains (plus he stinks...really stinksof sweat ). I have told him to keep the door unlocked and will see how he is when he gets out. This is the most motivated he has been all day.

There is lots of conflicting advice. Let me declare my credentials so you can weigh up appropriately: I am a consultant in acute medicine and nephrology (kidney Medicine) with a significant background in acute illness management including level 3 ITU training.

I would advise a minimum of assessment in an emergency department for this presentation - though wouldn't accept him under my team as he needs to be seen by a Urologist (surgical team dealing with obstructive isses - also experiences with sepsis due to UTI)

At 35 he is clearly sick. By all means phone 111 - though with temps of 40 and lethargy they should also be advising hospital.

Please look at the think sepsis link in my earlier post.

AstridPeth · 10/01/2016 19:48

I will ply him with water while he is in there.

If it was me and my DH was as poorly as your DH i would stay with him if he hadn't improved by the morning.

AstridPeth · 10/01/2016 19:49

Thank you madsaz76 going to read it now and then will show this to dh.

And no they didn't do a blood test- just a dip test.

Curiouserandcuriouser30 · 10/01/2016 19:52

OP I really think he needs to be seen by someone tonight.

2rebecca · 10/01/2016 19:52

My husband has had UTIs. I've left him in bed with plenty of water near a phone and would only stay off work if he was delirious. He should be a lot better by tommorow if it's sensitive to the antibiotic. I hope they sent the urine off to the lab. If he's no better tomorrow he needs the GP.

Guiltypleasures001 · 10/01/2016 19:52

Op I think this is a kidney infection not uti as us gals get, if he's bring sick he hasn't got a kidney/gall stone has he?

toastyarmadillo · 10/01/2016 19:56

Agree with previous well qualified posters, he needs to be seen at a&e, be sure to tell them about difficulties passing water.

BeaufortBelle · 10/01/2016 20:00

I can't make any comment about the medical issue but if you are usually reliable and I were your boss, I'd rather you called me tonight or first thing tomorrow so I could sort out cover for one/two days rather than coming in tomorrow and warning me you might be in fir some of tomorrow leaving me between a rock and a hard place of may be/may be not.

Call 111 (or whatever it is), line up some childcare and be ready to go to hospital even if it's a precaution. And if it's all fine take tomorrow off because you will be emotionally knackered and not for for work quite genuinely.

I hope you and dh are both in a better place tomorrow.

glampinggaloshes · 10/01/2016 20:00

listen to the specialists on this thread. my child had sepsis. not ever worth the second guessing. go into a and e tonight. rather safe than sorry

StarlingMurmuration · 10/01/2016 20:02

Tell him to try to wee in the bath. I had a hideous uti after I had DS and I could only wee in the bath or the shower until he antibiotics kicked in. I know several people have said they work immediately, but it will take a few hours for them to start working - see if he can wee fully in the bath, then reassess.

londonrach · 10/01/2016 20:02

Please take to a & e op. This isnt something to leave. Whats the worse that can happen if you do...he just get the antibiotics he needs quicker.

BeaufortBelle · 10/01/2016 20:02

Not fit for work that should have said.

landrover · 10/01/2016 20:02

I would certainly go to a and e tonight. The non urinating would certainly be an emergency. xx

Shutthatdoor · 10/01/2016 20:05

Please listen to madsaz. I have ended up in hospital with UTI before.

BoreOfWhabylon · 10/01/2016 20:08

Listen to madsaz76 (who clearly knows whereof she speaks) and all the other HCPs on this thread. We are all saying he needs to be seen tonight. We do not say this lightly.

When he is seen state that you are concerned about sepsis.

AstridPeth · 10/01/2016 20:10

Update - sorry for TMI. A little bit of time in the hot bath has caused him to go for his first proper wee today.
I have left him in there with a HUGE glass of water and orders to drink it all and I have told him about this thread. He is a bit worrid himself now.
But I am hoping that now he has gone for a wee he might start to feel better. I will leave him languishing in the bath for a bit and see if that helps.
Madsaz- rigors - insufficient urine-lethargy - He has but not sure on the rest.
He did say that his bladder hasn't felt full today. Although he feels like he constantly needs to pee. He is and always has been a frequent bladder emptier and never usually goes for too long between toilet breaks.
Something that his parents would home about when he was younger (he has passed this trait onto our ds).
He was driving a friend up to Heathrow maybe a year ago and was so desperate for the loo that by the time he got there I was in terrible kidney pain ) which went as soon as he had been for a wee. His kidneys hurt and he is aches and pains all over.

Please everyone, read madsaz76's posts. UTIs in men are not the same as UTIs in women.
