I made a birthday cake (pirate ship)as a gift for my nephew last year and one for SIL for her birthday, both cost about £15-20 each to make. We were talking about designs etc and she mentioned she'd never buy a professionally made cake as they cost too much and she can get one from Tesco for £7. She's just bought a huge princess castle cake for my niece who is 3 and cost her £100.

AIBU to be a bit hurt by her comments?

OP rid these people from your life and don't give them headspace, that's easier said than done, I know, but focusing on this stuff, will stop you from moving on from it all.

First there's a back story to this.

Do you have inside knowledge birds? I don't see where you're getting that from.

I assume the OP is hurt that she baked cakes for the relative who then said she'd never pay for an ordered cake. Then does. So op thinks her cake wasn't good enough.

So OP is hurt because SIL would rather pay £100 for a cake for her daughter rather than let OP make one for £15, which implies that SIL doesn't think OP's pirate ship cake she made before was good enough.

I think most people would be a little hurt by that actually.

I think she wanted to say that there is no need of spending £100 for a cake when you can spend those money on other things
When it is about cake, you can go with cheaper one because at the end all u do is eat it.

Surely just because you made it once, doesn't mean SIL isn't restricted to having to ask you every year.

That would drive me mad. It doesn't mean she thought your cake was crap or that she wasn't grateful at the time.
