This is the second time in two weeks! Same guy!

I went to go into the hall way to go upstairs and the delivery man literally came up to the door, didn't knock, opened my front door and went to put the parcel on the stairs!! He about pooed himself when he saw me then asked me to sign the thing.

The first time I heard the front door go went to check and he had done it then too!!

😡😡

My drivers/postmen always do this. I leave the door unlocked. This morning I found a printer in the hall - better than being left in the rain eh!?

You OP would no doubt be the first to complain if your package was left "in plain sight".

shrunkenhead · 30/12/2015 14:05

We don't lock our front door, why would you when you're awake and in?!
I'm guessing posters querying unlocked doors must live in high crime areas like towns and cities.

Dipankrispaneven · 30/12/2015 14:06

Whether the door is locked or not doesn't make it ok for a Yodel delivery man to even attempt it?!

I think it could - for all he knows it's a house with flats, or OP leaves the front lobby open but has another lockable door.

Chippednailvarnish · 30/12/2015 14:06

If Wer home in the day the door stays unlocked. Just because you keep it unlocked doesn't mean it gives a stranger the right to just walk in

I'm sure any opportunistic thieves will also share your point of view too...

PigeonPie · 30/12/2015 14:07

I would be cheesed off with the Yodel guy and would complain. However I also keep my front door unlocked during the day unless I'm upstairs for any length of time. Our burglar alarm has a tweeter on the front door so I can usually hear when it's opened.

Dipankrispaneven · 30/12/2015 14:08

In case someone walks in and nicks something? In case someone walks in and attacks you? How hard is it to use a Yale lock?

Iateallthemincepies · 30/12/2015 14:09

Our Hermes and Parcelforce do it here. I often don't hear the bell, they open the door and leave the parcels in the hall.
Much better than being left in the rain or on the step.

We're rural though so no passing walkers.

PrettyBrightFireflies · 30/12/2015 14:10

Nope. One of the lowest crime areas in the country - hence why 'walk in' burglaries are the most common type - daily reports of missing handbags, wallets and the like taken through unlocked doors while householders are upstairs, in the shower, hanging the washing etc.

Dipankrispaneven · 30/12/2015 14:10

Crimes also happen outside towns and cities. Indeed, opportunistic thefts from homes certainly happen in nice remote areas where thieves are less likely to be seen.

JacquesHammer · 30/12/2015 14:12

I always lock my door when I'm in - or I try to. Sometimes there will be the odd occasion when something occurs and I forget. Case in point - day before Christmas, I was arriving back home, Postman called to me just as I was closing the front door and gave me my post. Because I had already put my door keys in the back of the door to lock it as I closed it, it completely slipped my mind to lock it.

That doesn't mean it is ok for a delivery driver to walk in.

And with regards to the poster who said people would also complain about delivery being left in plain sight - well yes, because I expect the people delivery my parcel to do what they're supposed to do - hand it to me or take it back.

OhRayRay · 30/12/2015 14:14

I'd be grateful that the Yodel guy has made it clear how easily someone can dip in and out of your house tbh! And get that door locked.

WorldsBiggestGrotbag · 30/12/2015 14:15

I can't believe some posters are actually blaming the OP for having her front door unlocked. Mumsnet is like a parallel universe sometimes.
I rarely lock my door if I'm awake and in. The door only opens on to the hallway and no valuables are kept in there. To get to anything worth stealing they'd have to come through the room I'm in.
Complain to yodel. I think the problem is they're paid per delivery and have a huge amount to get through in a day. They probably think it's quicker to put it through the door than to knock and wait for an answer. It's not on though.

ExasperatedAlmostAlways · 30/12/2015 14:15

It doesn't bother me at all. My postman use to do it before his route was changed and I was fine with that. And the regular delivery guys do it too. I'd rather that than miss a parcel.

Also never lock the doors when in during the day. Only on mn do I see people say this. All my friends and family don't.

Fluffy40 · 30/12/2015 14:15

Would you have complained if he had not delivered it, and just drove away?

Mrs the point.

KingJoffreyLikesJaffaCakes · 30/12/2015 14:16

My postman does this too. As do City Link.

I keep the door locked now but it's even freakier seeing them trying the handle. I also had one of doorstep crapologue people let their dog into my house.

None of them have any boundaries. It's odd.

gleam · 30/12/2015 14:19

I can't believe how many people don't lock their front doors. Shock

TenTinyTadpoles · 30/12/2015 14:19

The one here does that as well, we have a porch and he (and the postman) both open it to put parcels in. I don't mind that but I would mind them coming right in and putting it on the stairs.

girlguide123 · 30/12/2015 14:20

I'm horrified your front door will open from the outside without a key!

our door is locked at night, ie you need a key to open it from the inside. when it is unlocked, you can just open it from the inside, but you still need a key to open it from the outside... or was it your back door?

OP - obviously Yodel should not just open your door, but it does highlight a lack of security - anyone could just walk in!

OurBlanche · 30/12/2015 14:21

It happens here too. Used to happen when we lived out in the sticks. Any delivery bod would try the door and drop a parcel in the hall.

The postman here does it if he can see the car, he tries the door assuming I haven't heard the knock (no bell). I often get to the door as he walks down the steps, I always say thank you and smile!

And I live her alone a lot, DH works away. No yale lock, and I usually turn the key when it gets dark, or when I go to bed.

I expect it has a lot to do with how 'local' your locale feels to you. I have lived in places where I would have locked every door, all day every day!

PrettyBrightFireflies · 30/12/2015 14:21

worlds I'm not sure anyone is blaming the OP, however a good precautionary measure if you don't want someone to enter your home without an invitation is to lock the door.
That way, even if someone is motivated to walk in to make a delivery or steal something, they are unable to.

Seems simple really.

The delivery driver won't know if the OP is one of those people who welcome having their parcel Delivered inside or not unless she locks her door.

Lucked · 30/12/2015 14:22

my parents and pills don't lock there doors and people they know knock/ ring at the same time as coming in. I think it is fine if it is a porch but a delivery guy should ring first if coming into the house.

I don't think she should start locking her door just because one delivery guy is in the wrong. The only reason our door is locked is because it is on a latch, I wouldn't be turning a key if I was in and awake.

If I go to someone's house and I hear a key turn before they open the door I assume they haven't been out the house that day, I didn't realise so many people locked themselves in.

Ditsy4 · 30/12/2015 14:22

Depends where you live I guess. Mine is never locked until I go to bed. My sister never locked her door ...ever! Until she moved onto the mainland.
Likewise our postie pops it on the kitchen table or double sink if there is room. Veggie guy also. Friends come in without knocking. If anyone knocks on front door I know it's a stranger. Often lock front door but only because it is difficult to open and everyone local uses kitchen door because when we were doing up the house the key was lost to front door until we got a new door. Mind u if there is a strange car here most people notice it and who gets out!

AgentProvocateur · 30/12/2015 14:23

I don't lock my door during the day - I don't have a Yale lock. Like Redexpat, I'd much prefer delivery drivers or postmen to open the door and leave parcel in the kitchen as teen DS is home from uni and sleeps through our extremely loud bell. Nothing worse than having to drive to a depot in a godforsaken industrial unit to collect a parcel.

Topseyt · 30/12/2015 14:23

I don't live in a particularly high crime area. I am in a large village, but still fairly rural.

Nobody at all is immune from crime. In some remote areas remember that it is much easier for burglars etc. to work undisturbed and undetected.

I always lock the doors.

OurBlanche · 30/12/2015 14:23

I'm horrified your front door will open from the outside without a key! The majority of locks work like that! Yales and similar are really quite new inventions - and often come attached to quite flimsy locks!
