Do not think smearing a soiled nappy on a car is a good idea, or mixing cat poo with milk and pouring it into airvents to get rid of problem parkers, etc etc. It's all gone a bit bizarre round here, and I used to read mn for sane, diverse, funny, wise intelligent opinion. Now my eyes bulge at the majority of posts / advice - people are aggressive and humourless far more often than wise, funny or kind. I'm hoping responses to this thread won't attract too many of those...

Has penis beaker ruined it for us long term posters?

If anyone can direct me to where all the old posters have gone I'd love to know Grin

I think there has been a change over the last couple of years - mostly its all become a lot more predictable, whether its talking about politics, light entertainment, relationships, education, feminism or the wisdom of being tolerant to your neighbours. There will be different viewpoints but its easy to guess as a thread starts which opinions will eventually drown out everyone else - cybernat style.

Did people always swear so much? Was LTB the only advice in Relationships ever?

I do find it incredibly useful though for quickly learning about something new - whether I want to start shopping at Lidl or understand the new national curriculum or even get my grammar corrected for me!

Hiding threads is your friend. I saw the nappy one last night and got no further than the first reply when I decided I didn't want to see any more.

No, let's stay here, and try and get that bar raised back to where it used to be.

I'm already considering a witty new take on my username for the splinter MN Grin

Hullygully · 29/12/2015 13:16

I'll come. Can we do blackballing?

Stratter5 · 29/12/2015 13:16

Oh god yes, the sex topic

PB attracted the wrong sort, and they stayed and made it their own.

PB was NOT FUNNY. I blame MNHQ wholeheartedly for PB. And all that yoni shite.

If it hadn't been PB, it would have been something else.

How about staying here but having a topic called "fuck off you tosspots?"

Stratter5 · 29/12/2015 13:18

Yes, swearing was our forte, one of the few websites where you weren't penalised for swearing. Taking 'cunt' back was meaningful. Why should the female sexual organs be the worst swear word? It shouldn't be any worse/better than prick.

Somethingisntactuallyanything · 29/12/2015 13:18

Malternatives Grin I like it! Where differences of opinion can be happily tolerated along with a bit of humour and give and take?! No one uses the eyeroll after a stroppy comment? No one starts threads about either dirty nappies/ benefits bashing?! Bliss.

It wouldn't be mumsnet without "The State of Mumsnet" threads every month. Personally, having been knocking around for about 8 years, I don't think it's changed much at all in essential character but I suppose it's maybe a bit busier these days and therefore noisier.

Stratter5 · 29/12/2015 13:20

It's interesting, any time I AS someone who is being a deliberate arse on an aibu thread (misreading the op, making shit up, twisting things to be able to have a right go, etc) I find that they only ever post in aibu.

Spot on. I don't remember MN pre-AIBU, but I don't think it brings anything beneficial to the forum.

Fairenuff · 29/12/2015 13:25

OP you will never be able to have an internet forum that offers complete anonymity. As you say, everything you post becomes public property and search engines will be able to, well, search.

I don't think what you are after is at all feasible. However, you can hide threads, ignore posters and use the rest of the site instead of just the 1% that is AIBU.

It's like stopping off at the first dirty diner you come to instead of looking further around the town for a nice little Italian restaurant. Put in a bit more effort and you'll find threads and posters that you like.

X posts there. I like the one helpful post to every twatty post idea, and I like to swear if occasion demands it not just because I can, iyswim

Reddit

www.reddit.com/r/Feminism

www.reddit.com/r/education

Reddit has some terrible subs...but also some excellent ones. I don't visit Feminism or Education but in general, the subs I like are great. Very nice people discussing things intelligently.

HarrietSchulenberg · 29/12/2015 13:27

I've been here for nearly 13 years (old gimmer, joined when ds2 was a baby, having lurked since ds1 was a baby). MN really hasn't changed that much, it's always been a gloriously messy bunfight of a place.

I remember Cod infuriating everyone, sometimes by accident and sometimes by design, an hilarious thread by a poster who claimed she put her kids to bed at night in their school uniforms to save time in the morning, numerous threads involving bizarre revenge tactics and how we all watched, open-mouthed as the GF thing kicked off.

I think that you're finding that MN has served its purpose for you and perhaps you now need to find something else. I actually missed the whole Moldies splinter thing as I was offline for a couple of days. Came back to find the place in uproar.

There was another splinter group a few years before when a poster set up her own site with help from her dh, but although we all registered there to have a nosey we all flocked back here because the other one was (sshhh) shite.

Anyway, that was a bit longer than I intended, sorry.

I've been here for many many years under various guises. I've definitely noticed a downturn in the quality of threads. That parking thread was an excellent example - although it improved somewhat once people started questioning the OP rather than just doing the RickI Lake "you go girl" shite.

Too many professionally offended posters, trolls, huns and emoticons. It'll be tickers next.
