Do not think smearing a soiled nappy on a car is a good idea, or mixing cat poo with milk and pouring it into airvents to get rid of problem parkers, etc etc. It's all gone a bit bizarre round here, and I used to read mn for sane, diverse, funny, wise intelligent opinion. Now my eyes bulge at the majority of posts / advice - people are aggressive and humourless far more often than wise, funny or kind. I'm hoping responses to this thread won't attract too many of those...

Has penis beaker ruined it for us long term posters?

If anyone can direct me to where all the old posters have gone I'd love to know Grin

ah, a poorly disguised, "MN isn't like it used to be" I love these

Hullygully · 29/12/2015 12:39

What stratters said.

It has inexorably moved down to the lowest common denominator i the interests of inclusivity.

Inevitable.

Somethingisntactuallyanything · 29/12/2015 12:41

Stratter- yes I agree, to a certain extent, although being working class myself I've noticed that netmums, hubby and hun do seem to be synonymous with Jeremy Kyle and misconceptions about not identifying as middle class. I agree about writing posts and then deleting them because they won't be received in the same way.

Potatoface2 · 29/12/2015 12:43

weird....im fairly new and have found that some oldies dont like newbies having an opinion that doesnt agree with them...ive pointed this out and got called names sworn at and been abused...im a gf apparently for speaking my mind and telling the truth....i think the op is right, but it isnt new people only causing strife!

Hullygully · 29/12/2015 12:46

It's not about new people causing strife. It's about the changed demographic.

RufusTheReindeer · 29/12/2015 12:46

I cant remember when i joined but i know it was before PB

I too write posts and delate them or write a disclaimer because i know someone will have a go

My eldest knows my name on here because i have not posted anything i am ashamed off. I have called a poster a rude name once and the thread was deleted due to the abhorrent behaviour of that poster so i have no regrets

Somethingisntactuallyanything · 29/12/2015 12:47

The thing is don't most of us nc so often that you can't really tell who is s long term poster and who is newer? My point is more that it's become more unpleasant, regardless of how long someone has been posting for. I've certainly felt myself itching to write a really harsh response to some comments

OP posts:
RufusTheReindeer · 29/12/2015 12:48

I dont think i would leave mumsnet for somewhere else (though i may just stop eventually as its a time waster Grin) because when Mumsnet is good..its very, very good

TheHouseOnTheLane · 29/12/2015 12:48

YANBU to think that shitty nappy thing was disgusting. I read it and just got out of there....especially when I saw people laughing and encouraging it.

Just gross.

Anyway....as others have said, avoid those threads. Reddit is pretty good if you know which subreddits to frequent. What are you interested in OP?

THere's something on Reddit for everyone!

Somethingisntactuallyanything · 29/12/2015 12:48

Well I wouldn't go so fat as to willingly let my children read my posts...Grin

OP posts:
Hullygully · 29/12/2015 12:49

It's the vulgarity I can't stand (and I don't just mean the incessant poo stuff). And vulgarity has nothing to do with money, class or longevity of posting.

Stratter5 · 29/12/2015 12:49

I don't think 'class' in that sense of the word has anything to do with it; it's more of an intelligence and knowledge thing.

Now all the new posters will get the hump because I'm calling them thick and ignorant. I'm not, I just wish it was still aspirational here, in the sense of improving one's knowledge of the world.

Somethingisntactuallyanything · 29/12/2015 12:50

Well parenting is what I'd mainly like to discuss, as well as education and feminism - suggestions welcome!

OP posts:
Somethingisntactuallyanything · 29/12/2015 12:54

Yes hully it's pretty base, coarse stuff that sort of horrifies me- I'm not squeamish, I definitely laugh like a drain at rude jokes...but it's this kind of level of unpleasantness in both the tone of the posters and content

Stratter - I get what you mean

OP posts:
Somethingisntactuallyanything · 29/12/2015 12:56

Oh god... Not sure I can cope with this sort of thing...

I agree with stratter as well

I have learned so much but its more difficult to find that type of thread

I think we shouldnt be able to namechange, maybe that would help

Fairenuff · 29/12/2015 12:59

OP why do you name change if you would prefer a forum where you can't namechange?

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 29/12/2015 12:59

I remember the use if the word cunt being celebrated on here as it was liberating to be able to use it

Somethingisntactuallyanything · 29/12/2015 13:01

I name change because threads are available on search engines, making me easily identifiable if someone wanted to join the dots, quotes get lifted by the daily mail as we don't own our posts, and some posters are pretty mean if they do an advanced search

OP posts:
TooOldForGlitter · 29/12/2015 13:03

I'm in agreement with Stratter and Hully.

I don't really post here anymore. As pp's have said, I too will often write out a reply to a thread but not post it.

Somethingisntactuallyanything · 29/12/2015 13:03

So what I'm saying in essence, if the forum was not available on search engines and posters owned their content rather than th site, I would be happy to- with the proviso that posters didn't abuse an advanced search function to be unkind

OP posts:
Somethingisntactuallyanything · 29/12/2015 13:05

OK hully, stratter and tooold - that makes four of us who agree - shall we start the splinter mn and see if anyone follows?!

OP posts:
stealtheatingtunnocks · 29/12/2015 13:07

I like the witty stuff. It is harder to find.

reallybadidea · 29/12/2015 13:07

I don't think it's penisbeaker that changed things, but AIBU becoming a topic in its own right. 'In the news' used to be one of the busiest topics, full of insightful, intelligent discussion. The same posters got involved in plenty of lighthearted Wink topics and the humour was witty and slightly off the wall.

I don't think it was the AIBU topic on its own which changed things, but it did mark the change to a more populist forum. It's like The News Quiz getting Benny Hill in as one of the scriptwriters Grin
