Do not think smearing a soiled nappy on a car is a good idea, or mixing cat poo with milk and pouring it into airvents to get rid of problem parkers, etc etc. It's all gone a bit bizarre round here, and I used to read mn for sane, diverse, funny, wise intelligent opinion. Now my eyes bulge at the majority of posts / advice - people are aggressive and humourless far more often than wise, funny or kind. I'm hoping responses to this thread won't attract too many of those...

Has penis beaker ruined it for us long term posters?

If anyone can direct me to where all the old posters have gone I'd love to know Grin

Leaningtower - are you really a labour party campaigner?!

because cuntiness is subjective innit, and mumsnet isnt made for you and your interests specifically.

Somethingisntactuallyanything · 29/12/2015 13:50

Better to debate, absolutely true, and that's right there might be another conversion- but can we debate with bit of wit and tolerance is what I mean

"what happened with penis beaker that apparently changed MN so much? In what way was it pivotal?"

It wasn't the content of the thread alone- the point about Penis Beaker is that mumsnet chose to publicise it on social media. And it gave what a lot of people felt was the wrong impression of the site, and encouraged a load of new posters who were different to the kind of people usually interested in mumsnet - for example people with no particular interest in parenting, but who were interested in laughing at knob jokes / other people's sex lives.

MontyYouTerribleCunt · 29/12/2015 13:50

Totally agree with what strattee just said about sense of self (stupid phone won't let me copy and paste sorry). I have definitely changed in RL and will speak my mind more since using MN. At the same time I think I can see things from different perspectives now as there are so many different views amongst MNers, so I am a lot more tuned into other people's views on things in RL iyswim.

Sure, there are plenty of arses on here, but I really do think they are in the minority.

Oh and I think the nappy thing sounds revolting (though I hid the thread so don't know full details I guess).

Sparklingbrook · 29/12/2015 13:51

I have so much I want to say but am suffering MN fatigue and just want everything back the way it was really.

I might go and join Pie and Bovril for a bit. Grin

MontyYouTerribleCunt · 29/12/2015 13:52

Also think I'm less judges now (I hope I wasn't budget before, but definitely try to reserve judgement a lot more now).

Somethingisntactuallyanything · 29/12/2015 13:52

Branleuse, I think we can all agree that a lot of posts are deliberately unpleasant, so not objectively cunty but perhaps collectively subjectively cunty?!

I've been here since 1665 - back then you'd get threads about 'fucking rats' & 'bastard fires' - but it was edgy & witty & bordering on the dangerous.
God I miss those days.

Exactly what I feel too

No. Just opinionated Grin

I didn't even vote Labour at the last election (I voted Green. Will vote Labour next time though as desperate to get the Tories out).

How edgy is the word cunt these days, to what extent has it been reclaimed?

Just wondering...

Branleuse · 29/12/2015 13:59

well yeah maybe, but theyre all people and we all have free will to be here or not be here.
I dont like the way some threads go, so personally I would never post for advice here on anything personal, but I dont think there actually is another forum like this anymore. There used to be loads of forums before facebook that were good, but this is one of the few that have survived, and is still fast paced and interesting. The things that annoy me, might not annoy you.

Im actually fine with some cunt having shit on their windscreen for a minor parking misdemeanor. I almost hope its true!

MontyYouTerribleCunt · 29/12/2015 13:59

Oh FFS "judgey" not "judges" or "budget"! Bloody autocorrect.

Stratter5 · 29/12/2015 13:59

Yes, it was MNHQ smearing PB all over social media. It was cringeworthy, I'd always been proud to be a MNer, I'd never hidden that fact from anyone, and then that was all over Twitter, FB, and the bloody papers, and it was about as welcome to me as a box set of The Office :(

It was learning about other peoples' lives, leaning, and finding out how they were affected by the Tory party governing. It shocked and horrified me, I'd been brought up reading the DM and simply knew no better. I felt like I'd found my people when I found MN.

I'm quite ridiculously proud of the fact that I now vote Labour. And Jeremy Corbyn is my hero. The only man in politics with morals and principles.

Fairenuff · 29/12/2015 14:00

I think we can all agree that a lot of posts are deliberately unpleasant...

But it's really easy to just ignore them. Don't engage with them. Address comments to the OP or other, more reasonable, posters. They only do it for a reaction anyway.

It's cyber bullying and it's here to stay I'm afraid, so just ignore them and move on, there's plenty more to see on mn.

leaningtoweroflego · 29/12/2015 14:00

Somethingisntactuallyanything ah, I see why you asked that question!

I'm curious to know what changed Stratter's mind as I have a history of getting a little over-invested in MN political threads.

DP says this picture is me Grin

But recently I've been feeling pretty depressed at the hopelessness of it all, seeing the right wing trash our country and reading people here parroting the propaganda put out in the right wing press instead of engaging their brains and thinking through the issues.

And I've not been posting so much on political threads as a result. I often got to post and then think "fuck it, what's the point?"

Stratter's post was interesting to me as maybe, just maybe, my rantings might possibly have an effect on someone. Or maybe I'm flattering myself and Sttrater's change in heart just comes from meeting a wider section of society here than in her RL circles.

I'm not running a survey for Labour HQ, I promise!

I was going to say 'YANBU OP' but I see you've banned that Smile

leaningtoweroflego · 29/12/2015 14:03

Stratter5 thanks, that's interesting.

leaningtoweroflego · 29/12/2015 14:05

Stratter5 oops, I posted to soon.

I was going to say, it wasn't the political ranting then Grin

I'm not sure how much the overtly political argument threads change anyone's mind. I'm pretty certain not the people involved most of the time as they likely have fairly entrenched views (myself included!).

people are aggressive and humourless

On a busy message board these are often the posts that elicit a response. Wise, funny or kind contributors may find they struggle to get noticed.

Stratter5 · 29/12/2015 14:10

In the old days, if someone was being a total twat, a dozen others would tell them to fuck off, and they often would. Nowadays we can only report and hope that eventually their comment will be deleted (after being up for hours and hours).

YES YES YES. 100% this. This is a huge part of why MN has changed.
