Just had a blazing row with "D"Bro over rinising dishes after washing them.

I went to put a plate I was washing on the drainer and he roared at me for not rinsing it

Confused

Who is the weirdo here?

OP posts:
AnotherTimeMaybe · 27/12/2015 16:48

bobble OP didn't talk about dishwasher, she was washing by hand and went to put the plate on the drainer when DB noticed

ouryve · 27/12/2015 16:48

And you don't need to keep the tap running.

Put a batch of crockery etc into not quite full of water sink.
Watch that batch and replace in sink.
Turn tap on, rinse each item and place on drainer.
Put next batch into slightly fuller sink.
If sink gets too full, it should have a working overflow. If it doesn't, get it fixed so you can use it for its intended purpose! (I appreciate that many landlords seem to have a blind spot on this issue)

ouryve · 27/12/2015 16:50

And I missed out the bit where you turn the tap off before starting on the next batch.

Roussette · 27/12/2015 16:51

Rinse? Why? No one has ever said they can taste soap! Boiling hot water, rubber gloves, a minimal amount of washing up liquid, water changed frequently, no bits of food left, but no rinsing.

Most things are done in the dishwasher, glasses sometimes rinsed, depending, crockery never and I don't know anyone who does.

ButterflyUpSoHigh · 27/12/2015 16:51

Always rinse can't stand soapy plates, glasses etc

trixymalixy · 27/12/2015 16:52

Not rinsing the dishes is disgusting! You can taste the washing up liquid on the glasses in particular.

Marmaladybird · 27/12/2015 16:52

How can they be clean if you don't rinse them? Squirt a tiny bit of Fairy on plate, scrub with brush then rinse off. Never occurred to me that I could be doing it wrong...

LittleBeautyBelle · 27/12/2015 16:52

? I've never heard of not rinsing. You've got to rinse the dishes. That's a given. There's no way I could put a dish after washing it out to dry without rinsing the soapy water/possible food residue off of it. It's like not rinsing the soap off your body when you shower. YABVU, is this post for real?

CheerfulYank · 27/12/2015 16:53

People don't rinse their dishes??!!

Billben · 27/12/2015 16:53

I don't ever let MIL do the washing up at my house 'cos she never rinses. Yuck

foxessoxes · 27/12/2015 16:55

Maybe im weird then Grin

I always wash, leave on drainer and when drainer is full i wipe with tea towel

OP posts:
WillSomebodyThinkOfStefan · 27/12/2015 16:55

I can't believe people don't rinse - surely it will be covered in residual soap and food from the dirty dish water.

WoodHeaven · 27/12/2015 16:56

Agree with your Dbro. I rinse all the plates etc too. I just don't want to eat some soap afterwards.

That was one of the things that made me Shock when I arrived in the UK. It seems to be a common thing to do going by what people do in the kitchen at work. (and my MIL etc etc)

Jux · 27/12/2015 16:58

DH always rinses, uses most of the hot water, so no one gets a bath! I don't rinse (and also air dry).

DH wants me to do it his way. MIL used to nag me to do it that way too.

I've told them both, many times, if they want it done their way then they do it themselves. If they want someone else to do it, then expect it to be done another way.

fresta · 27/12/2015 16:59

I've never met anyone who rinses in real life, it must be just an internet thing- I do same as you OP!

LittleBeautyBelle · 27/12/2015 16:59

As Michael Keaton was told in Mr. Mom, "You're doing it wrong."

LynetteScavo · 27/12/2015 17:00

Not rinsing is disgusting.

You're seriously happy to eat off a plate that was lady in dirty soapy water?

Your tea towel's probably manky too Hmm.

Rinse and leave to air dry, or use a clean, dry tea towel.

Ta1kinPeece · 27/12/2015 17:00

I've never met anyone who rinses in real life
I've never met anybody who does not
either in the UK or abroad

fresta · 27/12/2015 17:06

Hot soapy water, changed frequently doesn't contain enough bacteria to harm you. Bacteria doesn't breed well on ceramics. And I'm only washing plates that have been used for food, not anything harmful on them.

Ta1kinPeece · 27/12/2015 17:10

But if I wanted to eat soap I'd put it on my table to add to the meal

I do not want to eat soap so rinse stuff
or get the dishwasher to rinse it

ChoccyLog · 27/12/2015 17:12

My parents didn't rinse dishes. I was brought up as a non-rinser. Then a boyfriend whose father was a GP was aghast when we washed up together and I didn't rinse. His father had told him that ingesting detergent was not good.

If you don't rinse, then when you wipe- assuming you do, with a tea towel- the tea towel will spread bacteria, left over food and soap onto every plate.
If you don't dry the dishes and leave to drain, all the food particles, other people's germs and soap will dry on the crockery and cutlery.

Lovely Hmm

LittleBeautyBelle · 27/12/2015 17:14

Seriously, OP, you do need to rinse the dishes. Perhaps you didn't know any better before, but now you do and really there's no excuse now.

AllMyBestFriendsAreMetalheads · 27/12/2015 17:15

How much washing up liquid are people using to be able to taste it on their plates?!

It's a tiny amount of washing up liquid in a whole bowl of water, and most of the water goes on the floor stays in the bowl, it can't be that huge an amount ending up on the plates. I can never taste the washing up liquid.

AllMyBestFriendsAreMetalheads · 27/12/2015 17:16

Besides, I only have one small sink and a drainer, no room to rinse without washing up twice.

thelaundryfairy · 27/12/2015 17:18

Apparently washing up liquid and dishwasher detergent contain chemicals that can be harmful if ingested (can also cause diarrhoea according to my doctor) so many people like to rinse their dishes etc. after washing them.
