Just had a blazing row with "D"Bro over rinising dishes after washing them.

I went to put a plate I was washing on the drainer and he roared at me for not rinsing it

Confused

Who is the weirdo here?

Only on MN?

Nope, my mother, who never owned a dishwasher and had certainly never heard of MN, always rinsed the dishes after washing them. As did my grandmother.

ThursdayLastWeek · 27/12/2015 16:28

I think maybe I don't use as much fairy liquid as other users. The amount of suds left of my plates is no where near equivalent to that when I wash my hair with shampoo.

I do agree that there are things that require more care ie: the starchy mash potato, but I tend to rinse those before filling the sink for washing up.

ElfOnTheBoozeShelf · 27/12/2015 16:28

Well he was a twat for roaring at you, but yes, you should rinse dishes.

FruVikingessOla · 27/12/2015 16:29

Oh, and I am nearer the age of 60 than 50 - brought up in an era when 'lax' attitudes were commonplace. But unrinsed dishes wasn't one of those lax attitudes!

I still think the shouty brother is rude though!

Debbriana1 · 27/12/2015 16:29

This is one of the shocking moments I have had on Mn. I hope it won't make me scared drinking tea in other people's houses. I will start to question whether they have washed it properly.

ThursdayLastWeek · 27/12/2015 16:30

It's ok Deb no matter if they rinse, it's unlikely to kill you. I hope you'll be ok Wink

BrandNewAndImproved · 27/12/2015 16:30

Meh my dm doesn't rinse and her stuff doesn't taste soapy. I do rinse but only because it's a habit.

It's not anything to get worked up about either way imo.

FixItUpChappie · 27/12/2015 16:32

"What a waste of water to keep running water to rinse clean dishes."

ahhh, but they are not clean until you rinse the dirty soapy water off of them

AnotherTimeMaybe · 27/12/2015 16:32

btw Brits seem to be the only nation that don't rinse as a matter of course

This this this this!! Everyone non British I know reminds me of this!!!
So true, and sorry very disgusting!

VintageDresses · 27/12/2015 16:33

Tbh, I've always wondered how washing up in the sink, with hand hot water can clean anything properly anyway, but it doesn't seem to do any harm, rinsed or not.

lorelei9 · 27/12/2015 16:33

count me in with the people who are mystified at not rinsing.

toldmywrath · 27/12/2015 16:34

I've never heard of rinsing dishes after washing them either. I can't taste a residue- we have a dishwasher and often handwash any extras, so I do have a 'taste test comparison' & nothing tastes soapy.

MN is a strange place. Grin

Your brother was BU in both instances (to insist you rinse and to shout at you)

sparkleglitterdaisy · 27/12/2015 16:35

Always rinse , real yucky not to wash off soap, bugs etc... you wouldn't have a shower & not rinse off the shower gel.

fresta · 27/12/2015 16:38

I don't rinse except for glasses. Come on? The amount of washing up liquid left on a plate after it has drained is neglible, you only put a little squirt into a whole sink-full of hot water, and you don't lick the plate, you put your food on it so the actual amount you are likely to ingest is miniscule. As for all those comparing to hair washing? Well it's not the same thing, you actually put shampoo on your head and lather so it's very soapy, but I don't put washing up liquid onto the plate and lather it. Washing plates in the sink is more akin to having a bath with bubble bath. I don't rinse after having a bath (although I suspect MNetters will).

AnotherTimeMaybe · 27/12/2015 16:38

A mate of mine does vaginal rinses using a cup of chamomile Hmm ... Guess who's not drinking her tea !!!

toldmywrath · 27/12/2015 16:40

I've got a worse story than that AnotherTimeMaybe Grin

MrsTerryPratchett · 27/12/2015 16:40

I rinse and I'm a minger. A proper minger.

AnotherTimeMaybe · 27/12/2015 16:40

told tell us!

changename54 · 27/12/2015 16:41

Years ago I taught a group of students from the Far East, who were visiting Europe for the first time. They were shocked by how often they could taste washing-up liquid on crockery in the UK. They hadn't had the same problem in France, Italy etc - only here.

ouryve · 27/12/2015 16:42

YABU. I prefer to eat off crockery not covered in un-rinsed detergent and food.

Bobblehat10 · 27/12/2015 16:42

I don't understand the question - you opened the dishwasher to rinse the dishes (No that can't be right). The dishwasher rinses them 4 times,so why would you want to rinse them again.

specialsubject · 27/12/2015 16:45

if you don't use too much washing up liquid, you don't get load of suds dripping off things.

most stuff here goes in the dishwasher anyway, including all plates and cutlery. But I don't recall dying of washing up liquid poisoning.

BrandNewAndImproved · 27/12/2015 16:46

It's not the same as having a shower and not rinsing off the shower gel. It's more comparable to having a bubble bath and I don't rinse off after that.

Goingtobeawesome · 27/12/2015 16:47

Would you have dried the plates with a tea towel?

He shouldn't be roaring at any one. Twat.

fresta · 27/12/2015 16:47

They were shocked by how often they could taste washing-up liquid on crockery in the UK. Gosh, firstly they must have lead very uneventful lives and why are so many people tasting plates?
