Just had a blazing row with "D"Bro over rinising dishes after washing them.

I went to put a plate I was washing on the drainer and he roared at me for not rinsing it

Confused

Who is the weirdo here?

auntie not everyone can afford a dishwasher. if you had told me to get one 8 years ago i would have laughed we just about paid our bills, and afforded a washing machine forget dishwasher.

Even now more people have them but it is still seen as a luxury item, on top of the essential white goods we need i.e refrigerator and washing machines?

i do think dishwashers are wasteful in energy though, do dishes really take 1 hour to wash really?. The short cycle 30 mins doesn't always clean all my stuff so i stick with 1 hour economy cycle.

btw concerning washing up bowls why do we need them? i mean why cant we wash out the sink and fill the sink up? seems unnecessary or I'm stupid please tell me lol

Apparently it's so you can pour the greasy, soapy, filthy water on your garden afterwards, Katarzyna79; so you don't break glasses in your impractical ceramic sink; so you can tip things away down the side of it if you only have one sink in your kitchen; and so that you can have one extra thing to keep clean.Grin I still think more often than not it's so you can culture interesting bacteria, viruses, mould and mildew and gross out anyone who goes near your kitchen sink...

As for dishwashers - apparently, they use less water than washing up by hand. I wonder which technique the manufacturers are comparing them with? Xmas Grin

Get a dishwasher.

Rounda Lots of 'normal' washing up liquids contain phosphates - which are also used as fertiliser -as well as agricultural run off - the stuff we pour down the sink in cleaning products contributes to the formation of algal blooms in lakes/reservoirs .... so tipping it on the garden saves using extra (clean enough to drink) water just to water the garden, actually acts as a fertiliser - and saves the phosphates going down the drain...
I use Ecover which is phosphate free anyway and now have a one and half sink and a dishwasher - but in my old kitchen (single sink, no dw) I had a bowl - I actually miss it a bit - I used the post washing up water to rinse out recyclables or wash the cat bowls and then I used it to water my garden (esp strawberries/lawn) in summer...after reading this thread I am half thinking about getting a new one...
and I use my half sink to drain off rinsed cans/plastic for recycling so if I do wash up by hand I have to pour dregs carefully down the side of them ...
Thinking about it I'm sure with dishwasher I do use and waste a lot more water (guilt) .....

unlucky - unplumb that awful dishwasher at once and get thee down to Robert Dyas for a lovely washing up bowl/watering can. Xmas Grin

I'm sure I read recently that water with detergent shouldn't be used to water gardens. This was from an environmental / water recycling site.

AuntieMaggie
DH's family live in semi-rural Algeria, a country made up in large part of the Sahara Desert. They don't have running water every day, nor do they have running water in the houses or a kitchen sink. They wash up outside using plastic bowls on the floor.

They rinse the dishes. One smaller bowl of soapy water and a large bowl or bucket of clean water to rinse the soap off.

Debbriana1 · 31/12/2015 12:21

I have a dish washer. If am alone at home there is no need for my plate and cup I used for breakfast to wait before turning on the dish washer. I will wash up in the sink. Leaving the dishes in the dishwasher for hours is as bad as leaving the dishes on the side of the sink to pile up before washing.

Jibberjabberjooo · 31/12/2015 12:36

Why is leaving dishes in the dishwasher for hours bad? We run ours once a day, why would I waste water by washing up in between? Unless something is particularly smelly or needs soaking.

Hissy · 31/12/2015 12:54

Op, your db needs to get a fucking life, or hobby or something. Who the fuck does he think he is for roaring?

You do need to rinse though.

Lweji · 31/12/2015 15:54

It's quite possible the OP slightly overdid the roaring part...
