Aibu to ask you to spare a thought for those who are flooded.

We have lots of localised floods that are stopping our plans to visit family today.
A small problem compared to those having to leave their homes and the poor kids who can't just play with their toys.

Please check AA route planner if you are in NW as there are many routes and areas with closed roads. Our trip was only 5 miles but no way can we find a way through.

East Lancs is closed and M6 has part closures.

no its not finest. I dont know how water catchments work in your area, but there should be some respite in rain at least after this lot goes through til Tuesday.

FelixFelix · 26/12/2015 21:17

Does anyone know generally how quickly flooded roads would clear if the rain is stopping around midnight tonight? (according to my weather app!) I know it's probably a case of 'how long is a piece of string' but I really wanted to make it down to my parents house tomorrow because there's no other time I can go Sad

felix utterly depends on where you are, where the flooding is coming from. We had roads flooded for a long time 2 christmases ago.

ExploraDora · 26/12/2015 21:25

My DH is a teacher in Radcliffe and has been hearing all day from colleagues that they and many students have been flooded out Sad The waters are literally a street away from the school; any more rain and it will flood. It's just devastating - children literally losing their Christmas gifts.
We're a few miles away in a safe area (for now), but spent the afternoon on the M62 coming back from W Yorks where family there are also dealing with the floods - homes safe, thank goodness, but businesses under 7 feet of water. I feel utterly useless today, just wish I could do something.

BikeRunSki · 26/12/2015 21:27

felix it really, really depends on the local drainage, what capacity it is, how we its maintained, whether it's blocked anywhere...

isseywithcats · 26/12/2015 21:30

i live in halifax and my son said parts of elland are flooded the poster who asked about salterhebble you should be ok as the canal is quite low down from the road so hopefully wont have reached the raod with water , but there is a very high bank on one side of the road that may cause some problems if the water cascades down the bank

FelixFelix · 26/12/2015 21:45

I thought so. I'm in Baildon but need to either make it across to Shipley train station to drop a friend off or get to Leeds to drop her off there, then we can head down the A1. But I've now seen that Leeds city centre is flooding. Luckily we have lots of Christmas food left to see us through!

Donge13 · 26/12/2015 21:52

Max we are not to bad. We are going to get my friends on Dummers lane they are being evacuated. Take care in Radcliffe it is awful there

FinestGrundyTurkey · 26/12/2015 21:56

DS1 needed to get to Leeds from E Lancs today. No trains. DH was going to drive him but there were issues on most routes from here & at the last minute he organised a megabus from Manchester (so DH had a pretty good run both ways)

He should have got there ok by now - haven't heard but assuming no news is good news

Tomorrow he has to get down to Bath but that shouldn't be a problem (I hope...)

OublietteBravo · 26/12/2015 22:15

I'd be nervous if I lived in Castleford. The flooding upstream along the Aire and Calder is terrible - and presumably heading their way.

MooseyMouse · 26/12/2015 22:24

Here's a link to where you can donate to the Hebden Bridge area.

The localgiving appeal for Calderdale has been re-opened

I'm in Somerset and those of you affected are very much in our thoughts. Our farmers will be repaying your farmers for their kindness when we were going through it, though we all would rather it wasn't necessary.

Godstopper · 26/12/2015 22:33

York outskirts here, and grim. Ppl down the rd told to prepare to evacuate as Foss barrier failing. Scene above is pub in local village.

Kirkstall Road heading into Leeds City Centre. Sad

flooding.
JaceLancs · 26/12/2015 23:35

No better here DD and DS eventually got home after waiting 5 hours for a tow truck - her car may be a write off but insurance won't cover it so think I'll have to try and help her find a second hand engine if that's best option
Luckily I'm off work till after new year so can take her to work etc (she works shifts and we are fairly rural so public transport not an option)
DP still stuck over in other part of lancs - hoping he'll get here tomorrow to have a look at DD car and help me remove carpets etc

Crazypetlady · 26/12/2015 23:44

I'm in North wales it is quite bad not as wide spread as in lancs and other places I believe. I hope everyone is ok and safe!

Wetoopere · 26/12/2015 23:47

Big chunks of Cumbria affected again. Third and fourth time for lots of them now.
Going off what happened here many bridges will be closed while they are assessed which takes a while but after 2009 floods quite a few were found to be unsafe.

There's a group on FB for Cumbria offering help to other areas , search Cumbria floods.

Northern Rail are fairly up to date on train travel if you're in those areas.

ilove · 26/12/2015 23:51

I'm in Guiseley - your only way to Hollins Hall is to do M1 - Stanningley Bypass - Horsforth and the A65 and IF the water by the retail park has cleared, go straight to the roundabout at the White Cross and turn left down Hollins Hill. You can't get through Shipley at all from Bradford.

MyDogStinks · 26/12/2015 23:52

Supposed to be heading to Middlewich tomorrow from York. Not sure we'll even make it the first 2 miles if things don't clear up...

scaevola · 26/12/2015 23:59

I've just been reading the yorkpress website, where it says that rivers might not peak until Monday. North Yorkshire police are also asking people not to travel unless essential.

surpriseitsme · 27/12/2015 00:14

I'm at the side of the river at shipley/baildon I did attempt a trip to shipley this morning but gave up when the water reached my calves! Horrendous! Levels not dropping here but don't appear to be rising either!

Bunbaker · 27/12/2015 00:15

I'm staggered that Haworth is flooded. I thought it was too high up.

We are supposed to be visiting friends in Menston on Tuesday, driving from South Yorkshire.
